The South Central Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters have announced their All-Region Basketball Team. Phillip Moser of Salem was one of the 14 players named to the team. Congratulations Phillip on a great senior year!
The City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball/ Softball/T-Ball program is just around the corner. Signups will be held today and tomorrow from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center located at 1201 West Rolla Road. These will be the FINAL signups. This league is for all boys and girls who are age 4 to 14 as of May 1, 2010. The cost is $15.00 per child. For more info, call 729-6290.
The Salem Track Tigers faired well at the Rolla Open Monday. Derek Freeman won 1st place in the 100 meters with a time of 10.96 seconds, and then captured 1st place in the 200 meters with a time of 23.13 seconds. Jacob Kettner took 1st place in the 400 meters with a time of 56.12 second. Jarred Patterson won 1st place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.46 and then took 1st place in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:46 even. In the 100-meter hurdles, Stetson Hanning won 1st place with a time of 16.65 seconds. The Salem team of Frankie Boyd, Stetson Hanning, Dex West and Derek Freeman snared 1st place in the 4 x100 Relay with a time of 45.83 seconds. Stone Chen won the Triple Jump with a distance of 38’ 5.5”. For the ladies, Crystal Prince captured 1st place in the 400 meters with a time of 1:12 even. Jennifer Herndon was awarded 1st place in the shot put with a throw of 29.2 feet followed by Amber Kearby who also threw 29.2 feet. Herndon then won 1st place in the discus with a throw of 100 feet even. Crystal Prince won the Triple Jump with a distance of 29.8 feet. Salem will hold their first Open today starting at 4:00 at the high school.
David Freese went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 in Grapefruit League action. Felipe Lopez also knocked in a run. Kyle McClellan was credited with the win for tossing three innings of two-hit ball with a strikeout. Rich Hill got the starting nod and allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and as many strikeouts in three frames. Cardinal’s catcher Yadier Molina was forced to leave in the second inning with a strained right oblique muscle and will be re-evaluated on today. Albert Pujols returned to the lineup after sitting out a game with a sore back and went 0-for-3 with a walk for the Cardinals. The Cards face the Mets today.
Torii Hunter hit two home runs and Joel Pineiro scattered five hits and a walk over five scoreless frames, as the Angels downed Kansas City, 8-6, in Cactus League play. Brian Bannister was hit around for five runs and six hits in four innings of work to take the loss. Mitch Maier and Alberto Callaspo had two hits and an RBI apiece. Paulo Orlando added a pinch-hit, two-run single for the Royals. Kansas City will play Seattle today.
Valtteri Filppula scored the go-ahead goal with 6:49 to play in the third period leading the Red Wings to a 4-2 win at Joe Louis Arena, damaging the Blues’ playoff hopes. Paul Kariya and Jay McClement provided the offense for the Blues, who are 10 points behind Detroit with nine games remaining. Ty Conklin allowed three goals on 23 shots to take the loss. The Blues will play the Los Angeles Kings tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
