The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that patching of chip and seal would be done in various locations, grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4080, 6210, 6320 and 6090, while materials were being hauled to county roads 6090 and 5103. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2050, 3180, 3120 and 4280. He went on to say that two men would be cutting brush on the county roads of 3273, 3275, 3260 and 3270, plus materials would be added to county roads 3120 and 3220. Larson added that he had a man putting blades on grader #31. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he had spent several hours talking to CenturyLink personnel discussing the incorrect assessments and credits of phone bill sales tax. He went on to say that the TCRC Rural Address Coordinator is working with CenturyLink on address coordinates. Skiles encourages citizens to carefully check their phone bills from CenturyLink and if they are incorrect contact CenturyLink at 866-519-7885 and be very, very persistent to have CenturyLink make changes. Skiles said, “It is their problem, which they created, and they need to fix it.” He added that if CenturyLink says they can’t fix the problem, be persistent because others have been, and as a result have gotten the problem corrected. The Commissioners voted 3-0 to sign a letter of support for the request by the Office of State Courts for additional funds to expand the Adult Drug Court and the DWI Court. If approved the request would result in no increased cost to Dent County. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley stated that bills were being approved and that phone bids were taken on Tuesday for propane.  MFA was the low bidder at $ 1.79 a gallon. Commission Purcell added that he had attended the Tourism Committee meeting Tuesday and that Timber Day, Current River Cruisers and American Family Rodeo were approved for tourism tax dollars. Spencer Jones and Lindsey Chaffin with Great Rivers Associates were in to update the Commissioners on the bridge project for Dent County Road 3210, commonly referred to as the Hospital Road. Commissioner Larson, along with Jones and Chaffin, left to meet with property owners in the bridge vicinity. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday at 9:00 in the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem R-80 School District has rescheduled the planning night to begin development of a Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) tonight at 5:30 at the Upper Elementary library. This plan will set goals for the district for the next five years. It is important to get input from as many stakeholders in the community as possible when developing this plan. All students, staff, and community members are encouraged to attend as we begin this important process for planning the future of our school district. The Salem Tiger baseball team will open up their season this afternoon when they play Houston in the opening round of the Houston Tournament at Houston. That game is set to start at 4:00.

The Salem Boys and Girls track team will participate in the Rolla Open today at 3:30 at the Rolla High School.

Neil Watson scored 18 points and handed out seven assists as the Southern Miss Golden Eagles registered a rare win against Missouri, 71-63, in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers (23-12), who entered the meeting with a record of 100-6 at home since the start of the 2008-09 campaign, were led by Earnest Ross with a game-high 22 points on 4-of-7 shooting behind the 3-point line. Jordan Clarkson and Jabari Brown contributed 13 points apiece.

Steve Mason stopped 32 shots and the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the St. Louis Blues 4-1 on Saturday afternoon. Jaden Schwartz provided the lone offense for the Blues. On Sunday, Brian Elliott stopped all 33 shots he faced and St. Louis turned in a textbook defensive effort in a 1-0 victory over Pittsburgh at CONSOL Energy Center. Elliott's whitewash was the fourth of the season and his 16th with the franchise, tying him with Hall of Fame netminder Glenn Hall for second on the club's all-time list. David Backes recorded the lone score of the contest for the Blues, who moved into a tie with idle Boston for the most points in the NHL at 103. The Blues will be in Toronto to play the Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

Matt Adams hit a two-run shot, part of a three-homer barrage which lifted St. Louis over Houston by a 6-3 count in Grapefruit League play. Jhonny Peralta and Matt Holliday also contributed solo blasts, and Yadier Molina added two hits with an RBI for the Cardinals. Joe Kelly fanned five and walked four over his five-plus inning stint on the mound, but won after limiting Houston to two runs on as many hits. The Cardinals will play the Mets today at 12:05.

Brandon Crawford slugged a two-run homer to highlight the San Francisco Giants' 13-9 win over the Kansas City Royals in a spring training clash. Salvador Perez and Carlos Peguero hit solo shots for Kansas City. The Royals will play the Rockies at 3:05 this afternoon.

Memorial service for Rita Fave Melton of Salem, age 58, will be held today at 12:00 (noon) at the Grace Community Church in Salem.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 this morning until service time. Funeral service for Dean Walter Hawley of Salem, age 87, will be held at 10:00 Tuesday morning at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 6:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Bethel Church Cemetery in Lonedell, MO on Tuesday at 2:30. Memorials may be made to The Samaritans Purse at P.O. Box 3000 Boone, North Carolina.

Funeral services for Michael Lee Widner of Bunker, age 57, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held today from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Morrison Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Widner Family. 

Memorial service for Martha Rufus of Viburnum, age 74, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Memorial visitation will be today from 5:00 to 7:00. Memorials may be made to the family of Martha Rufus.

Funeral services for Mildred Brown of Rolla, age 87, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Memorials may be made to the Rolla Schools Back Pack Friday Program.

Funeral services for Curtis Anderson of Cook Station, age 54, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Memorials may be made to the Anderson Family.

Funeral services for Anita Kay Lynch (Grogan) of Rolla, formerly of Salem, age 40, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Green Tree Christian Church in Rolla. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Anita Lynch Memorial Fund. A “Celebration of Life” Memorial Service for Glendon Lee Gant of Bunker, age 82, will be held at First Baptist Church of Bunker on Saturday morning at 10:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greeley Cemetery, the Bunker Volunteer Fire Department, or the Bunker Alumni Scholarship Fund, all at Bunker; to Southwest Baptist University in Salem, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
