The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the previous meetings, Comptroller Stephanie Wofford will present the summary of operations for the month of February. Administrator Dennis Pryor will then update the Board on the auxiliary report, hospital activity calendar and legislative issued. Director of Nursing Carol Lacey will then update the Board on statistics reports for February along with the nursing services and ancillary service reports followed by the Chief of Staff report. In old business, there will be a 2010 strategic planning goals update, an update on the hospital lagoon, a discussion about the TCRC and the Finance Committee meeting date. In new business, the Board will address a healthy active communities grant, the critical access hospital annual review and hospital purchases. The Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The monthly meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After a calendar hearing, the approval of the agenda and any communications, Superintendent Cindy Rumpf will update the Board on legislative issues and summer school for 2011. In new business, the Board will discuss the district programs for a planning meeting, set an organizational meeting date, consider the MSBA policy service agreement, approve the calendar for 2011/2012, approve a 2011/2012 salary schedule and address resignations. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of addressing personnel. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 7:45 Wednesday morning in Dent County on Highway 72 about three miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Nissan Quest driven by 35-year-old Mandy Venable of Rolla ran off the right side of the roadway, struck an embankment, and came to rest against some trees. Venable suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Nissan Quest sustained moderate damages and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Salem Area Community Betterment Association will host their annual “Trivia Night” this Saturday night at the Salem City Hall Auditorium at Washington and 2nd Streets and begin at 6:00 PM. There will be ten categories with ten questions in each category. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 teams, with $200 going to the first place team. A prize will also be given for the most creative team name. The 2010 first-time champions – “SCCC Escapeez” from the prison in Licking, Missouri will be defending their title and will enjoy special food and table decorations. You still have time to get a team entered. The cost is $100 per team, and teams are limited to a total of eight people. Snack foods will be provided along with drinks. The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History presents “For Goodness Snakes,” this Friday night. Visitors can arrive at 6:30 and the program will begin at 7:00 with Janet Price, Park Naturalist from the Johnson Shut-Ins State Park.The cost is $2.00 per person of $5.00 for the whole family and that includes a light snack. Ozark National Scenic Riverways has requested authorization for the placement of dredged and fill material in waters of the United States associated with the periodic removal of gravel at the Akers Ferry location on the Current River. Ozark National Scenic Riverways (ONSR) requests a permit that would allow them to periodically remove accumulated gravel from the Current River around the ferry location using a bulldozer. The proposed project is located in the Current River northwest of Eminence. The basic purpose of the project is to provide Missouri Highway K a crossing of the Current River. The overall purpose of the project is to provide enough draft to allow the continued operation of Akers Ferry, which was first built in 1949 during extension of Highway K. Any interested party is invited to submit written comments or objections relative to the proposed work on or before March 27th. Substantive comments, both favorable and unfavorable, will be accepted and made a part of the record and will receive full consideration in determining whether this work would be in the public interest. The decision whether to issue a permit will be based on an evaluation of the probable impact including cumulative impacts of the proposed activity on the public interest. The Salem Baseball Tigers beat Willow Springs Tuesday afternoon in Houston by the score of 11-3. Devon Sutterfield hit an inside-the-park home run driving in two runs, and Brady Floyd also knocked in two for Salem as they evened their record at 1-1. The Salem varsity will face Mountain View this afternoon at 4:00 at Mountain Grove in the SCA Tournament.

The Salem Track Teams will host the Salem Open today starting at 4:00 at the Salem Track.

The Salem Golf Team opens their season this afternoon at Mountain View starting at 4:00.

The City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball/Softball/T-Ball programs are just around the corner. Sign-ups will be held today and Friday, March 25th in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center located on West Rolla Road from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. There will be a sign-up on Saturday, March 26th in the front lobby of the Salem High School Gym from 8:30 am to noon. This league is for ALL boys and girls who are 4 - 14 years of age as of May 1, 2011. The cost is $20 per child. For more information, contact Parks & Recreation Director Greg Nash at 729-6290.

Allen Craig highlighted a five-run sixth inning with a three-run homer, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets, 5-3, in Grapefruit League play. Matt Holliday went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Cardinals, while starter Jake Westbrook gave up one unearned run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Cord Phelps drove in the winning run with a triple in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Cleveland Indians rallied past the Kansas City Royals, 8-7, in Cactus League action. Kila Ka'aihue went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and two RBI for the Royals, who also got a solo shot from Alcides Escobar. Mitch Maier went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Starter Nathan Adcock gave up three runs on four hits over two-plus innings.

Mike Anderson is on his way back to Arkansas, but this time as the head basketball coach of the Razorbacks. Anderson has decided to leave Missouri, where he has been the head coach for the past five seasons. The 51-year-old Anderson compiled a 111-56 record during his time with Missouri. He guided the Tigers to 13 wins over ranked opponents, four NCAA Tournament victories and a 75-13 record at home. Missouri went 23-11 this season, including an 8-8 mark in Big 12 play, but lost to Cincinnati in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Funeral services and visitation for Aaron Charles Sharp of Salem, age 37, will be private and will be held Friday at 1:00. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Mary Lenn Nash of Salem, age 76, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 Friday. Interment will be in the Allen Cemetery in Raymondville.

Funeral services for Wayne Cameron of St. Joseph, age 88, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Fox Chapel in Licking. Visitation will be held Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.
