The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to four fire calls in the last few days. The first fire call came on March 18 when the department was paged out at 2:29 in the afternoon for an electrical fire in the 100 block of West 4
th St. A total of 7 firefighters responded to the call and were able to bring the scene under control by 2:35 and they remained on the scene until 3:18. The second fire call came on Friday, March 21st at 4:34 in the afternoon when the department was paged out for a structure fire on Route W and Dent County Road 426. A total of 18 firefighters responded to the call arrived on the scene at 4:53 to find a single story wood frame structure fully engulfed and heavy with black smoke. Montauk, Lenox, and Jadwin Fire Departments were paged to the scene for mutual assistance. The fire was brought under control at 6:09 and the firefighters remained on the scene until 7:48 before returning to the station. The State Fire Marshall was called in and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Another fire call came in Friday night at 7:48 in the evening when the department was paged to a structure fire on Highway 19 South. A total of 18 firefighters responded to the call and arrived on the scene at 8:05 to find Inman Stables totally involved. The Lenox, Jadwin, Montauk, Rolla Rural, and St James Fire Departments responded to the call for mutual assistance as well as the Dent County Sheriff Department and Salem Memorial District Hospital who provided rehab services for the firefighters. A total of approximately 43 firefighters fought the blaze and were able to bring it under control at 10:27. Firefighters remained on the scene until 11:58. The State Fire Marshall was called in and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The Dent County Fire Protection District would like to thank Pizza Inn for providing refreshments to the fire personnel. The last fire call came in on Sunday at 10:32 in the morning for a structure fire in the 200 block of West Dent. Fourteen firefighters responded to the call and arrived at the scene to see a two-story wood frame structure with heavy smoke coming from the first floor. The Jadwin Fire Department was dispatched to the scene to aid in fighting the fire. The scene was brought under control at 11:44 in the morning. The State Fire Marshall was called to the scene at 12:41 and the cause of the fire was determined to be electrical.
The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting at the hospital library Thursday evening. At the meeting, Dr. Julius Punzelen gave the Chief of Staff’s report and recommended that the board approve courtesy staff privileges to nephrologist Syed Zahoor-Ul Mueen which they did. Comptroller Stephanie Wofford then gave the summary of operations for the month of February that showed the hospital with a gain from operations of $49,617 and an excess of revenues over expenses of $61,550. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy reported that the hospitalsent an ambulance to Piedmont in case they needed it during their rescue efforts, but it was not used. During the month of February, there were 840 emergency room visits with 80 transfers, 191 ambulance runs with 171 patients being transported, 16 surgeries, 220 Home Health Care, 8,685 lab tests, 13 MRI, 332 rehabs, 116 dialysis and 310 clinical visits. In the auxiliary report, Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor said that 17 members were at the last meeting where fundraisers for the rest of the year were discussed. Pryor said that it the state legislature has postponed any action on the Insure Missouri program until the budget process is complete. He said that work has resumed on the Physician’s Office Building 3 and expenditures to date are at $422,676. Pryor said that a finance meeting will be held at 5:00 on April 10th at the hospital library and that the board meeting in May would be held on May 22nd. Pryor reported that two family practitioners were in contact with the hospital in February as were three emergency room physicians. The diabetic screening held the past two weeks had 70 participants and the next clinic will be in May and will be a Women’s Wellness Screening featuring tests for osteoporosis, and June will be Men’s Wellness Screening highlighting test for the prostate. The board approved the non-budgeted purchase of refurbished Renatron II Reprocessing Station for dialysis from Minntech for $9,495, and they approved the purchase of a Smart Board for $1,800 for the purpose of donating it to the Salem Campus of SBU. The board then went into closed session.
An accident happened Thursday afternoon at 3:07 in Phelps County on Highway 63 about three miles south of Edgar Springs that took the life of three children from Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 1989 Ford Tempo driven by 30-year old Mark Barton of Licking was traveling northbound and was stopped for road construction on Highway 63. A 2003 Freightliner driven by 38-year old Alvin Lewis of Moorhead, Mississippi was also traveling northbound and struck the Ford from behind. Infant Gaberielle Miess, 5-year old Gracey Miess and 11-year old Christel Miess were pronounced dead at the scene by Assistant Phelps County Coroner Ralph Roark at 4:30 and their bodies were taken to the Null and Sons Funeral Home in Rolla. All three children were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. Barton suffered serious injury and was flown to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, and a passenger, 34-year old Christina Miess suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. The Ford Tempo was totaled, the Freightliner sustained moderate damage and both were towed from the scene by C & C Towing of Rolla.

Rick Ankiel and Colby Rasmus each belted two-run home runs as the St. Louis Cardinals crushed the New York Mets, 14-4, in a Grapefruit League contest. Brian Barton collected a pair of hits and three runs batted in for the Cardinals, while Skip Schumaker went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Todd Wellemeyer picked up the win over allowing three runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings. The Cards are now 13-10 in the Grapefruit League.
Damon Hollins went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and Ryan Shealy hit a solo homer and scored twice as the Kansas City Royals edged the Chicago White Sox, 6-5, in Cactus League action. Zack Greinke earned the win for the Royals, throwing six solid innings. The righty gave up two runs on four hits, while striking out six. With the win, the Royals improve to 13-11 in the Cactus League.
Patrick Kane scored the game-winning goal 1:09 into overtime and added an assist in regulation as the Chicago Blackhawks edged the St. Louis Blues, 4-3, at United Center. Lee Stempniak, D.J. King and Keith Tkachuk accounted for the Blues' goals The Blues will host Detroit tomorrow night at 7:30 on KSMO Radio. The Blues have dropped 14 of their last 16 and find themselves with the second-worst record in the conference. Only Los Angeles, with 66 points ranks lower. Hannu Toivonen made 27 saves for St. Louis. St. Louis completed its nine-game road swing with 1 win, 6 losses and 2 overtime losses.
The St. Louis Rams agreed to terms with center Brett Romberg on a one-year contract.
