The Salem Baseball Tigers advances to the SCA Preseason Tournament Championship game with a 7-2 win over Mountain Grove yesterday at the Salem High School Baseball Field. Grant Gordon started for Salem and struck out seven top get the win as Ethan Curley came on and got the save. Matt Whitaker went 2-4 and drove in three runs in the game including two in the three-run second inning for Salem. C.J. Smith smacked a two-run homer for Salem in the third inning as the Tigers move to 2-0 on the year. They will face the winner of the Ava/Houston game at noon in Ava Saturday in the SCA Preseason Tournament championship game.
Marian Gaborik posted two goals and an assist as the Minnesota Wild extended their franchise-record winning streak to eight games with a 5-1 rout of the St. Louis Blues. Pavol Demitra registered a goal and two assists. Doug Weight scored the lone goal and Curtis Sanford gave up five goals on 37 shots for the Blues, who lost for the seventh time in their last nine games. They will face Detroit Saturday afternoon and you can hear the game on KSMO.
Alejandro De Aza went 3-for-4 with two doubles and knocked in a run to lead the Florida Marlins to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Spring Training action. David Eckstein and Albert Pujols had singles for the Cardinals, who had just four hits in the game. Chris Carpenter took the loss, surrendering one run on four hits in six innings of work.
Kansas City’s game with Oakland yesterday was postponed due to rain.
St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was arrested for drunk driving early Thursday morning. At approximately midnight, undercover officers saw La Russa's dark blue Ford SUV stopped at an intersection. The vehicle sat through two cycles of green lights. At that point, it was determined that there was probable cause to arrest La Russa for driving under the influence of alcohol, a misdemeanor. He was arrested and transported to the Palm Beach County Jail.
