The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their monthly meeting Tuesday evening in the hospital library. The Board started their meeting in Closed Session and then voted to go into Open Session. In Open Session, after approval of the agenda and the minutes from the February meeting, Comptroller Stephanie Wofford presented the summary of operations and statistics report for the month of February and stated the hospital had a positive month. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy reported that for the month of February there were 73 acute care patients admitted, 745 emergency room visits, 171 ambulance runs, 21 surgery cases, 171 home health visits, 10,774 lab tests were performed, 1,000 radiological procedures, 144 CT scans, 22 MRI scans, 13 nuclear med scans, 2,166 cardiopulmonary procedures were performed, 450 rehab treatments, 199 dialysis treatments, and a total of 295 clinical visits. It was noted that the according to influenza statistics that the flu season started in our area late in February and peaked earlier this month. Pryor then updated the Board on the Auxiliary meeting held March 6th with 19 members and guests in attendance. The Auxiliary has several fundraisers over the next couple months and is working on purchasing tables and chairs for the Long Term Care Dining room. In old business, the Board was updated on the 2011 strategic planning meeting that included the approval of an addition to bylaws for the Foundation program. The Board approved the budgeted purchases of two surgery sterilization containers from Specialty Surgical for $3,395 for the surgery area; a Dell 24-port managed switch from SHI for $325 for Information Systems; a (4) battery pack from Tiger Direct for $441 for Information Systems; and a LaserJet Multifunction Printer from Tiger Direct for $567 for Family Medical Clinic. They also approved the non-budgeted purchase for a replacement desk from Automated Business Systems for $1,566 for Acute Care. Although this was not the lowest bid, it was purchased locally. The meeting was then adjourned.

Patricia Happel of Salem has a system for selecting Powerball® numbers, and it paid off. The 61-year-old, who uses a combination of “past numbers that were winners, numbers that come up a lot,” and her own random numbers, won $10,000 by matching all four white-ball numbers and the Powerball on Wednesday, March 14th. She recalled how she and her husband of 40 years, Marvin, “kept double checking” their numbers on the Lottery’s website, Molottery.com. While claiming the prize at Lottery headquarters, Happel declared the prize money was “going to go in savings.” “He just retired, and I’m getting ready to retire,” she said. “This makes us feel even better about it!” Happel purchased her winning Powerball ticket at Casey’s General Store located at 201 South Main Street in Salem. The winning numbers from the drawing on March 14th were: 1, 8, 41, 46, 59, and the Powerball was 24.

The City of Salem summer baseball, t-ball, and softball signups will be held today and Friday, March 23rd and again on Thursday, March 29th and Friday, March 30th at the Salem TCRC from 4:00 to 6:00. There will also be a signup on Saturday, March 24th at the Salem High School Gym while the youth basketball games are going on. The Salem Tiger baseball games in the Houston Tournament have been cancelled for today. The games are rescheduled for Friday, March 23rd. Salem will finish their game against Houston at 2:00 and take on Mt. Grove at 4:00.

Jason Blake scored the eventual game-winning goal late in the third period as the Anaheim Ducks edged the St. Louis Blues, 4-3, on Wednesday at Honda Center. Jaden Schwartz, David Backes, and David Perron scored for the Blues, who have lost three of their last four contests. Jaroslav Halak was tagged for all four goals on 22 shots in defeat. The Blues will be in L.A. to face the Kings tonight at 9:30 and you can hear it on KSMO.

Jon Jay's RBI single in the ninth inning lifted the Cardinals to a 2-1 win over the Mets in spring training action. Andron Chambers scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning and Lance Berkman batted in the other run for St. Louis. Jake Westbrook pitched six scoreless innings, giving up three hits while striking out three and walking none in the start. The Cardinals will play Washington today at 12:05.

Alex Gordon went 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Kansas City Royals knocked off the Oakland A's, 8-3, in Cactus League action on Wednesday. Billy Butler, Jeff Francoeur, Lorenzo Cain, Max Ramirez, Eric Hosmer and Greg Golston all drove in runs for the Royals, while starter Luis Mendoza gave up no runs in his one inning. The Royals will have split squad games this afternoon against the Angels and the White Sox.

St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher doesn't expect to replace suspended defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, saying the team will use "a collective effort" to handle the position instead. The NFL suspended Williams indefinitely Wednesday for his part in the bounty program operated while he was defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints.

Funeral services for Arvis Leroy “Sonny” Johnson of Salem, age 80, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Webb Cemetery in Reynolds County at 1:30 Friday. Memorials may be made to the Webb Cemetery.

Funeral services for Irene Land of Salem, age 95, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be today from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Liberty Baptist Church Building Fund or the Dent County Animal Welfare Society.

Funeral services for Nellie A. Shimon of St. James, age 76, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary on St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Iowa City, Iowa on Monday at 2:00.

Funeral services for Imogene Henderson of O’Fallon, age 81, will be held Saturday at noon at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Graveside services will be at 1:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Junia May ‘Judy’ Turnbough of Viburnum, age 72, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Viburnum High School Gym. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until time of service at the gym. Another visitation will be held Friday night from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum.

Funeral services for Ethel Lorene Riggs of Cherryville, age 93, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Shoal Creek Cemetery in Berryman.
