The Salem R-80 Board of Education met for their regular meeting at the district administrative boardroom Thursday night. After the school year calendar hearing in which the administration said that next year would begin on August 19^th and snow days will be built into the school year instead of just being at the end, Superintendent Steve Bryant said that the state has indicated that schools should anticipate a loss of revenue from the state. Originally the state said to figure about a two percent reduction, but now say that schools may actually want to figure as much as a ten percent reduction of state funds. Bryant said that that the state may not fund summer school based on attendance as in years past, but the district will prepare for it. If it is not funded, the district would only offer remedial classes and credit recovery classes.  Bryant said that Salem’s revenues currently exceed their expenses, but the school district still has some large payrolls for the year. Even with that, the budget should be OK. The board recognized the SCA Match and Science Relay team for taking the SCA crown for the 12^th time in the last 18 years, and the World  Youth Science and Engineering Team for taking 3^rd place in the WYSE competition. Bryant said the Board would apply for the DMG Petroleum Education Grant for $750 from Dean Garver, the new owner of the Mobil station in Salem. In old business, the Board of Education policies were again tabled at the request of the administration. Bryant recommended to the board to fund the Career Ladder Plan as there may be funds this year, but may not be any next year. Even if that happens, Bryant said that the board should consider continuing the local portion of the plan. The Board reviewed the Booster Club Financial Reports as requested by the schools auditor for the Volleyball Booster Club, Softball Booster Club, Band Booster Club and the 12^th Tiger Club. It was reported that the Basketball Booster Clubs did not submit financial reports for this year, and did not submit them from last year either. The board approved the use of two busses for Project Graduation and set the organizational meeting after the April Municipal Board Election for April 13^th at 6:00. The board accepted the resignations of janitor Edna Cooksey, Assistant Softball Coach Jimmy Stevens, teacher Mike Gibson, Secondary Business Education Teacher Michael Farrar, 4^th Grade Teacher Christina Jackson, teacher Robert Stagner and para-professional Randy Rumpf. The board approved the Career Ladder waiver for Stephanie Floyd and also the renewing the MSBA Policy Service Agreement for $1,710. The board approved an agreement with LJ Hart and Company to remain the school’s underwriter if they decide to try to pass another bond issue in the future. With this agreement, if the school should decide on a different underwriter, the school would owe LJ Hart and Company about $104,000. The board approved the 2010-2011 school calendar before Superintendent Steve Bryant passed out Letters of Recognition from Representative Jason Smith to the school board members. The board then went into closed session where they voted to hire all certified staff and recommended coaching and extra-duty staff. Additionally, after conducting a candidate search, Mr. John McColloch was selected as the new assistant superintendent with a 6-0 vote. The meeting was then adjourned.

An accident occurred at 2:20 Saturday afternoon in St. Francois County on Rosener Road at Highway 67. According to the highway patrol report, a 1995 Hyundai Accent driven by 25 year-old Amanda Mullins of Salem was traveling on the highway and attempted to make a right turn while going too fast. The Hyundai began to skid and struck a roadway sign before traveling off the right side of the roadway. Mullins suffered minor injuries and was taken by St. Francois County ambulance to Parkland Health Center. She wasn’t wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Hyundai Accent sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene by Marlers.
