The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their March meeting Monday evening at the district administrative offices boardroom. Superintendent Steve Carvajal informed the Board that the roof on the Junior High had a big heating unit go down with no parts available, and the roof has even more leaks since the heavy rains of late. He also informed the Board that there are at least 250 signs around town promoting the Bond Issue that will be on the April ballet. In reports, William Lynch had three teachers go through Instructional Practices Inventory training. It was reported that 58 new kindergartners registered to begin school next year. William Lynch also scored a 100% on the regional evaluation of the Positive Behavior Support program and they kicked off their enrollment for the summer journey program. The Salem Upper Elementary kicked off summer school enrollment on Friday, March 15th. The 6th grade student council members held a blood drive with the American Red Cross on Saturday, March 16th. There are 20 students, 18 from the Upper Elementary and two from the Salem Junior High, competing in the State National Archery in the Schools Program tournament this Saturday in Warrensburg. The Upper Elementary Tiger Choir is competing at the Jefferson City Music Festival on Saturday, April 13th and on the same day, 14 students will be competing in the MCTM contest in Rolla. Also noted was Serendipity is scheduled for May 9th. At the Salem Junior High, track practice began on March 12th with the first track meet to be April 1st at 4:00 pm. There are currently 86 Junior High students involved in track and those include students from the other four rural schools. The Junior High Honor Club sponsored a “Kids for Cancer Week” and raised over $500 for Cancer Research. Several students also participated in the Box Tops for Education Program and 10 students were rewarded for bringing in 100 or more Box Tops. Then at the Salem High School, Krista Beyer took 2nd place in Cabinet Making Technical Information Written Test in the Skills USA District and Dylon Enloe and Samantha Emerson took 1st place in Promotional Bulletin Board. The State Musical Festival begins this Thursday at East Central College. Principal John Smith thanked Mrs. Rahaman, Mrs. Barnes, and Miss Sanders for their work on the Science Fair as Kaytlyn Wells and Alyvia Toman took 1st place. The Board then voted to conduct their April regular meeting and organizational meeting for April 16th beginning at 6:00 pm. The Board approved the MSBA Policy Service Agreement, and the Reading Recovery Purchased Services Agreement. The Board accepted the resignations of Jessica Stewart as the Junior High Cheerleaders Coach and Matt Parker as the Junior High Basketball Coach. They then went into closed session.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Office released their reports for Thursday, March 14th. At 8:01 in the morning, a deputy was dispatched to property located on County Road 5170 for a report of a stolen fence charger. Upon arrival, contact was made with the owner at the gate that enters his property. Taken was a "Parmak" 12-volt solar powered fence charger valued at $300. That evening at 6:45, the Sheriff’s office received a telephone call regarding a burglary. Deputies arrived on the scene and spoke with the victim that stated that an ATV had been stolen, a red Polaris Razor side by side. Anyone with any information regarding the stolen fence charger or ATV is asked to contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Office by calling 729-4231.
The Missouri Department of Transportation is concentrating on patching potholes and keeping highways smooth and safe for motorists as part of its Missouri Pothole Patrol program launched statewide. MoDOT has dedicated staff and resources to repair minor road damage quickly and is seeking the public’s help to spot potholes and notify the agency of their location. The Missouri Pothole Patrol runs now through April 14th. There are multiple ways for motorists can report potholes: Call the MoDOT’s Customer Service Center, available 24/7, at 1-888-ASK-MODOT (888-275-6636), online from your computer or smartphone at modot.org; or by e-mail at comments@modot.mo.gov.

The Houston Tigers beat the Salem Tigers Wednesday afternoon, 7-1, in the Houston Tournament. Salem falls to 1-1 in the tournament and on the year and they are scheduled to play Mountain Grove this evening at 6:00 at Houston, weather permitting. THIS GAME HAS BEEN POSTPONED AS OF 10:00 AM THIS MORNING.
The Salem Tiger golf and track teams are scheduled to be in action today. The track team will host a meet in Salem at the SHS track starting at 4:00 while the golf team will be in Mt. View this afternoon. THE GOLF GAME FOR TODAY, HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
The ninth-ranked Missouri Tiger basketball team will face the eighth ranked Colorado State Rams tonight in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Missouri is 23-10 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio, starting with the pre-game show at 7:45.
The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will continue Spring Training action this afternoon against the New York Mets. That game is set for 12:05.
Mike Moustakas went 3-for-3 with a solo home run to lead Kansas City in a 7-2 win over the L.A. Dodgers in spring training action. Lorenzo Cain and Johnny Giavotella each hit a solo home run while Jeff Francoeur had two hits and an RBI for the Royals. Wade Davis pitched four innings and gave up one run on two hits with four walks. The Royals have the day off today.
