The Dent County Sheriff’s Department is releasing a Scam Alert! On March 17th the Dent County Sheriff's Department received a walk in report from a resident off of Highway TT. It was reported an agreement had been made to spray a metal house roof. The reporter stated he was offered the painting to be completed for $25.00 labor plus the cost of material. Upon completion of the work $1075.00 in cash, a $700.00 check, and a $1000.00 check was paid to the contractor for work completed. The $1000.00 check did not clear the bank. The name of the company that completed the work is not known at this time, however, there is a possible identifier relating to an individual. Sheriff Bob Wofford is asking residents of Salem and Dent County to please be aware as springtime as it brings home repair services such as waterproofing, home and barn roof painting, asphalting, flu and tuck-pointing repair and other maintenance services. Homeowners are advised to be on guard for unscrupulous contractors or individuals offering such services.  Be sure to obtain references and have contracts reviewed if there is a doubt. Don't let anyone force or coerce you to do work on the spur of the moment. Ask for and record proper identification and be cautious about letting an unknown person or persons in your home.  Don't make payment hastily for merchandise or services you haven't received. Get everything in writing including price, warranty and all conditions. If you are older or living alone don't hesitate to speak with a family member before you make a decision. Contact law enforcement for suspicious behavior.
