The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night for their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers. The board approved the consent agenda that showed sales tax revenues for the month of February came in at $113,158.21. So far this fiscal year-to-date, the sales tax revenues have increased about $15,000. The board discussed the clean-up of the property at 817 East Gibbs and after hearing from Nuisance Officer Jared Brown that very little clean-up has been done since the last meeting, the board voted to accept the lowest bid to clean-up the property from Paul Camden Excavating for $1,245 that included fill dirt. Prior to the board meeting, the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approving a conditional use permit to the Riverways Pregnancy Resource Center for the property at 1600 Doss Road. The board approved that recommendation. City Administrator Ray Walden reported the city received nine bids for the McArthur Avenue Water and Sewer Project and the engineers are reviewing the bids. Walden also said the engineers are reviewing the sewer plant needs and are assessing what needs to be done to meet the new requirements. He also reminded the aldermen about the Business Expo to be held April 5th at the Upper Elementary School Gym starting from 9:00 to 12:00 noon. Mayor Gary Brown said that “Home Serve” is again sending letters out to residents to insure plumbing from the city meters and cleanouts to their home. The city does NOT endorse the company or getting insurance for your pipes. He reported that Thursday night at the MRPC meeting, Workforce Development reported Dent County’s unemployment rate stands at 5.9% and that is down 1.3% from 2013. Brown also said the electronic and tire recycling this year will be held on October 18th at 3rd and Grand. The board approved the Spring clean-up weeks of April 28th and May 5th with Waste Corporation. The clean-up does not include the collection of tires, oil, or paint. The board agreed to set up a workshop to determine a policy to have a continual influx of funds into the Electric Reserve Fund that could be monthly or quarterly. The board went into closed session.

The Annual meeting of the Industrial Development Authority of the County of Dent, cancelled in January and February due to weather, is scheduled for 6:00 tonight at the Bank of Salem at 4th and Main Streets. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the previous meeting, will be a review of financial statements for the period ending December 31, 2013. There will be an election of officers, approval for payment of bills presented and an EDA report filed with the Denver office. There will be a discussion about the status of lease(s), truck parking lot security status and other business that may before the Board and the meeting will then adjourn.

On Thursday, March 20th from 8:00 to 9:00 in the morning, Dent County will honor Congressman Jason Smith with a portrait unveiling in the Dent County Courthouse. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

Contractors working for the Missouri Department of Transportation will replace the pavement along the eastbound lanes of I-44 between Highway 63 and Vichy Road in Rolla. The work will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 22nd because the project was delayed by one week due to cold temperatures forecast during the nighttime hours. One eastbound lane of I-44 will be closed during the work. As part of the project, the off ramp from eastbound I-44 to Highway 63 will be closed during this week to allow crews to mill the pavement. The on ramp from Route E to eastbound I-44 will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. this week as well. Motorists can expect delays in the area. The contractor has until May 1st to complete the project. Salem Tiger Basketball player Cody Whitaker was selected to the all-district team for Class 4, District 10. He ended the season averaging 16.1 points and shot 41% from the 3-point line. Cody made 71 three pointers on the season, plus finished the year with 36 assists and 32 steals. Congratulations Cody!

Jabari Brown scored a game-high 30 points as the Missouri Tigers squeezed out an 85-77 win over the Davidson Wildcats in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament at Mizzou Arena. Also scoring in double figures for second-seeded Missouri (23-11) were Earnest Ross and Jordan Clarkson with 16 and 15 points. Missouri will face the winner of the Toledo/ Southern Miss game, which will be played tonight. 

The St. Louis Blues will be in Chicago tonight to face the Blackhawks at the United Center. The Blues are 47-14-7 on the year and have an NHL leading 101 points. You can hear the game on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 6:30.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will resume Spring Training action today against the Minnesota Twins. First pitch is set for 12:05 in the afternoon.

The Kansas City Royals also had the day off yesterday and they will face the Cincinnati Reds tonight in Cactus League play. First pitch will be at 8:05 tonight.

Funeral services for Nicholas S. Asbridge of Rolla, age 84, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rolla. Interment will be in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.

Memorial services for Ed Pope of Steelville, age 80, will be held today at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time.

Graveside services for John “Jack” Lally of St. Louis, formerly of Steelville, age 96, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Steelville Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until service time at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Orin Biggs of Steelville, age 84, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Homes in Steelville. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made given to the Victory Baptist Church in Cherryville.

Funeral services for Dale T. Howard of Salem, age 87, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Carty Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Carty Cemetery or Hobson Community Church.

Funeral services for Verble Johnson of Salem, age 81 will be held at 1:00 Friday at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday night from 5:00 to 7:00 with a Masonic service at 7:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Masonic Lodge #225 AFAM and Second Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Jessie Lee Crocker of Viburnum, age 80, will be held at 2:00 Saturday at the Cherryville First Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Sam Crocker Cemetery in Goodland. Memorials may be made to the Sam Crocker Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

A “Celebration of Life” memorial service for Glendon Lee Gant of Bunker, age 82, will be held at First Baptist Church of Bunker on Saturday, March 29th at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greeley Cemetery, the Bunker Volunteer Fire Department, or the Bunker Alumni Scholarship Fund, all at Bunker; to Southwest Baptist University in Salem, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Funeral arrangements for Edgar Gray are incomplete at this time, but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
