The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that portions of District 1 received from two to 2 1/2 inches of rain on Sunday so workers will be checking for and repairing any road washouts. He stated that two trees have been reported down and workers will be removing them. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson also said that workers would be checking roads for washouts and repairing them as needed. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the Public Housing Authority meeting held last Thursday at the MRPC, and said that the HUD Voucher program was hit hard by the sequestration budget cuts so some changes may need to be made. He also stated that in the External Relations Committee meeting, House Bill 486 was discussed that would provide an additional $4.00 recording fee at the county Recorder’s office of which $2.00 would go to county treasury for economic development and the other $2.00 would go to the regional development commissions for economic development. He also said that on the federal side, Senator Blunt has introduced a bill called “the Market Place Fairness Act” that would force sellers to collect all sales and use tax for each state on telephone and Internet sales. At the MRPC meeting, the MRPC Board voted for the director of the MRPC to draft a letter to the US Army to clarify the importance of the economic importance of Fort Leonard Wood to the region. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that absentee voting continues for the April election, that the last day to mail out a ballot will be March 27th, and the courthouse will be open for absentee voting on Saturday, March 30th from 8:00 AM to noon. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The U.S. Department of Education will make more than $150 billion in postsecondary financial aid available to students throughout the nation. College Goal Sunday makes applying for financial aid easier by providing students with free help filing out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the first step in applying for federal financial aid and many state programs. The Missouri Association of Student Financial Aid Personnel and the Missouri Department of Higher Education are partnering closely to bring the CGS program, called FAFSA Frenzy, to Missouri. To assist students and parents with FAFSA process, financial aid professionals will be on hand in Salem tonight at the SBU-Salem campus from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
An accident occurred at 5:18 Monday evening in Dent County on Highway 32 about three miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 45-year old William Curley of Salem was driving a 2005 Kia Sedona westbound when he crossed the centerline and side swiped a 2009 Pontiac Vibe driven eastbound by 48-year old Raymond Jordan of Boss. The Pontiac then slid off the right side of the roadway and struck a mailbox. The Kia traveled off the left side of the road and overturned. Jordan suffered minor injuries, was treated at the scene, and then released. Curley suffered no injuries. They were both wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. Both vehicles were totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Salem 8th Grade Volleyball Team won the St. James 8th Grade Volleyball Tournament Saturday with a perfect 12-0 record. In pool play, Salem defeated St. James, Dixon, Bourbon and Viburnum without losing a game. Winning Pool A, the Lady Tigers then played the 2nd place Cuba Lady Wildcats from Pool B in the semi-finals and won that match in two straight games, before facing Pacific Lady Trojans in the championship game where the Lady Tigers again, won in two straight games. Congratulations Lady Tigers!!!
The Salem Baseball game Monday was postponed and rescheduled for 6:00 tonight against Cuba at Houston. The game originally scheduled for 4:00 today will be played Wednesday at 4:00 at Houston.
The St. Louis Blues will be in Vancouver tonight to play the Canucks at 9:00. The Blues 16-10-2 on the year and have won five of their last six games. You can hear the game on KSMO.
Lucas Duda hit a two-run home run to help the New York Mets defeat the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-2, in spring training action. Matt Adams and Oscar Taveras drove in a run apiece for the Cardinals. Jake Westbrook got the start, allowing two runs on three hits in six innings. The Cardinals play the Marlins today at 12:05.
Ian Kinsler went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run as the Texas Rangers took an 8-2 win over the Kansas City Royals in spring training action. Brandon Wood hit a two run double while Lorenzo Cain had two hits for the Royals, who will play the Rockies today at 3:05.
