The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving an attempted arson and a DWI. On March 16
th at 10:32 pm, the Dent County Sheriff's Department received a report of someone attempting to set a camper trailer on fire off of Dent County Road 5390. A silver Chevrolet 4-door pickup truck was observed pulling off of County Road 5390 and going westbound on B Highway. The truck was described as having "4 X 4" in red outlined in black on the side of the bed. A citizen discovered a fire was burning under or near the trailer and extinguished it. The Sheriff's Department was called and the responding Deputy collected evidence and noted there was an odor of raw gasoline vapor still present. The camper trailer was scorched at the right rear and some plastic molding had melted off. On March 15
th at 1:11 am while on routine patrol a Dent County Sheriff's Deputy observed a vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 32. The vehicle was weaving from the edge of the road to the center yellow dividing line and crossed the centerline 4 times. After pulling the vehicle over, investigation led to the arrest of a 53-year old male who was cited for operating a Motor Vehicle While in an Intoxicated Condition. Anyone with information concerning the fire or the described vehicle in the incident, which is still under investigation, is encouraged to contact the Dent County Sheriff's Department at 729-3241.
In closed session Thursday night the Salem R-80 Board of Education voted to re-employ the certified staff for the 2008-09 school year. They also employed Christina Jackson as an Upper Elementary teacher; Andrew Weldon as the Junior and Senior High instrumental music and band director and Doug Cuneio as the Junior High Assistant Principal. The board also re-employed Susan Jenkins on a part-time basis to serve as the Special Education Director for the 2008-09 school year. The meeting was then adjourned.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct a special closed session meeting today in the administration office boardroom beginning at 6:00 to discuss personnel.
The Dent County Schools, Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III, and Northwood R-IV, will not be in session on Friday, March 21st. Classes will resume on Monday, March 24, 2008.
The Dent County Fire Protection District held their meeting on Tuesday, March 11th. A total of 18 calls were completed in February and of these calls 31 percent were ambulance assists and motor vehicle accidents. The Board then reviewed policies and procedures. After some discussion a motion was made to fill the propane tanks at the locked in price before the end of the season. During reports, the training policy original draft was presented to the Board, discussed, and changes were asked for and will be presented at the April meeting. Chief Nash discussed upcoming grants, the FEMA grant and the USDA grant. Efforts this year will go toward the USDA grant to complete some Capitol Improvement plans. Nash asked the Board to consider another source of fuel and also asked the Board President to contact the Credit Card Company for more information on the reporting and taxes. Nash also reported that the “Storm Spotter” class was a big success with about 50 people attending. The next meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District will be on held on Tuesday, April 1st starting at 6:00 at the Dent County Fire Protection District Fire Station located at #2 South Main.

The St. Louis Cardinal Baseball pocket schedules have arrived at KSMO just in time for the regular season that gets underway on Monday, March 31st. You will also be able to pick up schedules at all the sponsor locations.
Signups for the City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball/Softball/T-Ball Season will be held in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center. This league is for all boys and girls that are between 4 and 13-years of age. The last sign-ups will be held on Thursday and Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 and then on Saturday from 9:00 am to noon. Brad Boyes scored the lone goal of the shootout, while Manny Legace was perfect at the other end, helping the St. Louis Blues to a 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre. Keith Tkachuk, Andy McDonald and Boyes all tallied in regulation for the Blues, who won on the road for the first time in 11 contests. Legace finished with 27 saves. The win snapped a six game losing streak. The Blues will be in Ottawa Thursday night at 6:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
Aramis Ramirez hit an opposite-field, three-run homer as the Chicago Cubs topped the Kansas City Royals, 6-5, in Cactus League play. Mark Teahen had three hits, including a game-tying double in the seventh, while Alberto Callaspo also hit a two-run double in the same inning for the Royals. John Bale yielded four runs and five hits over 5 2/3 innings, while Joakim Soria was charged with the blown save and the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in the ninth.
