A Memorial Highway Naming Ceremony was held Friday at the Commons dedicating a portion of Route H in memory of Dent County Sheriff’s Deputy Joann Barnes. 150th District Representative Jason Smith, who sponsored House Bill 1816 that made the dedication possible, welcomed and thanked everyone for attending.  Smith said that Deputy Barnes was a great asset not only to the Sheriff’s Department, but also to the community, and she died preserving the peace of Dent County. After Smith’s comments, the floor was turned over to family, friends and colleagues who shared comments and stories about Deputy Barnes, then Representative Smith and Senator Frank Barnitz unveiled the sign that will be placed at the junction of Highway 72 and Route H.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular meeting Thursday night at the district administrative offices. Superintendent Steve Bryant said that all of the Kindergarten teachers in Dent County will be meeting April 10th at the administrator’s meeting to discuss working together insuring the same things are done at each school. Bryant stated that Summer School would be held from May 29th through June 29th for grades K-6, with packets being mailed out on March 28th. Bryant said that beginning with the 2008-2009 school year, the high school MAP test will be replaced by an end of course test that is much more effective and will count toward a students grade by at least 10%. In New Business, the Board awarded a plaque to John Boyle for eleven years of service on the Salem R-80 Board of Education. The 2006-2007 school calendar was amended whereby there will be a half day on April 6th in order for the school year to be able to end on May 18th, which is also graduation. The 2007-2008 school calendar was approved with school starting on August 16th. After discussion, the Board approved establishing a Salem R-80 Educational Foundation as well as a Scholarship Fund through the Dent County Community Foundation. The Board approved budget revisions with spending funds having been frozen at this time to insure a balanced budget, and they agreed to pay the MSBA Policy Service agreement for $1,710. School Board elections will be held on April 3rd and the Board agreed to hold their re-organizational meeting on April 5th beginning at 6:00 PM. The Board accepted the resignation of Tiffany Seay as the High School Cheer Leader Sponsor, 2nd grade teacher Heather Kunert and the retirement of Sr. High Counselor Mike Lilliker. In closed session the Board voted to reemploy the certified staff at each of the buildings excluding any resignations or retirements.  They also voted to employ Rita Jo Medlock as a JR/SR High Family and Consumer Science teacher; Sally Wood as a Lower Elementary Speech Implementer; and Kathy Peterson in Foodservice. The Board was also informed of several reassignments of certified staff including Travis Wrightsman from JR High Physical Education to SR High Physical Education, Clay Moody from JR High Social Studies to JR High Physical Education, and Phyllis Freeman from Upper Elementary foodservice to Upper Elementary Special Education Aide. The meeting then adjourned.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their regular meeting tonight at 7:00 at the city hall council chambers. The board will discuss bids on an asphalt roller and Salem information brochures, discuss Bill #3093 which amends Ordinance #3090 that set the sewer rates out of town, and discuss pool rates for the upcoming season. The board will also hear from all the aldermen and Mayor Gary Brown. The meeting is open to the public.

Kip Wells threw four innings, allowing one unearned run on just two hits as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets, 5-4. Wells and David Eckstein both had a RBI in the second inning, and Scott Rolen added a two-run double in the sixth for St. Louis. Rick Ankiel's sacrifice fly scored Scott Spezio for the winning run in the eighth.

They have arrived!  The 2007 St. Louis Cardinal Baseball pocket schedules are now available at the KSMO studios and will also be available at numerous locations in town including Progressive Ozark Bank, K & H Auto Supply, the Bank of Salem, Country Mart, Mooney Auto Supply and Town and Country Bank.

Pedro Feliz went 3-for-3 with a home run and knocked in three runs to lead the San Francisco Giants past the Kansas City Royals, 6-5, in preseason play. Esteban German went 4-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored for the Royals while Mark Teahen knocked in three runs. Jason Standridge took the loss, allowing one unearned run on two hits in less than an inning of work.

Eric Brewer scored 2:04 into overtime to give the St. Louis Blues a 3-2 win over the struggling Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place. Petr Cajanek and Jeff Woywitka each had a goal and Radek Dvorak had a pair of assists for the Blues, who snapped a three-game slide. Curtis Sanford finished the game with 22 saves. St. Louis has won five of its last six games against Edmonton. They will face the Ottawa Senators tomorrow night at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.

The Spring High School Sports season begins today for most of the Salem Tiger Sports Teams. The Salem Boys and Girls Track Teams will be participating in the Rolla Open starting at 4:00. The Salem Golf Team will be on the road at Willow Springs starting at 4:00. The Salem Baseball Tigers start the pre-season SCA Tournament against the Willow Springs Bears today also at 4:00. KSMO Radio will NOT be carrying the pre-season tournament.

Funeral services for Fay D. Tarvid of Salem will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Funeral services for Charles Christian Stewart of Salem, age 80, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Empire Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Stewart family of the Empire Cemetery.

Funeral services for Ruby La Vina Barton of Rolla, age 84, will be held March 21st at 11:00 at the Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla and Sillin Funeral Home of Lyons, Kansas.

Private services for Lester Rakittke of Salem, age 80, will be held at a later date. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
