A house fire reported Saturday afternoon in Jadwin on Dent County Road 6280 took the lives of two women from Salem. Dent County Coroner Gina White pronounced 70-year old Jessie Laughlin and her daughter-in-law, 57-year old Elizabeth Laughlin, dead at the scene. Their families were present and notification was made to all family members. According to the report, the Dent County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call at 2:42 Saturday afternoon informing them of a structure fire on Dent County Road 6280 in Jadwin with two females trapped inside. The Jadwin Fire Department, Montauk Fire Department, and the Dent County Fire Department all responded to the residence and extinguished the fire. Also present were the Salem Memorial District Hospital EMS, Dent County Sheriff’s Department, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. A multi-agency investigation is underway by the Missouri State Fire Marshall, Dent County Sheriff’s office, and the Dent County Coroner’s Office to determine the cause of the fire. The bodies were released to the Wilson Mortuary per the family’s request.
The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington at 7:00 p.m. After approval of the consent agenda, City Administrator Clayton Lucas will report on various issues concerning the city. Aldermen Kenneth Nash, Hayden Powell, Phillip Giacomelli, and Ryan Whitaker as well as Mayor Gary Brown will give their reports and discuss items concerning the city. Bill number 3268, which is an ordinance to establish a procedure to disclose potential conflicts of interest and substantial interests for certain municipal officials, will be read. The City of Salem currently has this ordinance in their Code Book but it must be renewed every two years. Resolution number 3-2013 will be introduced. This resolution authorizes the Mayor to execute an agreement between the city and the Commons Committee for the leasing of the Commons for the annual Fourth of July activities. In new and miscellaneous business, Clayton Lucas will discuss the needed revisions to the employee manual due to federal statutes. The board will then adjourn. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers is open to the public.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Conservation Federation of Missouri (CFM) expect a record participation of more than 1,600 student archers (up from 1,300 as previously reported) from 64 schools around the state to compete at the Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP) fourth annual state tournament at the University of Central Missouri Multipurpose Building located at 500 South Washington Avenue in Warrensburg. The state tournament was originally scheduled for only Saturday, March 23rd beginning at 8:00 am, but due to higher-than-expected participation, additional shooting flights have been added on Friday, March 22nd at 5:00, 6:00 and 7:00 pm. Local students competing will come from the Salem Upper Elementary School, Dent-Phelps R-3 School, Northwood R-4 School and Phelps County R-3 School in Edgar Springs. The Salem R-80 students on the Elementary Team (grades 4-6) include 4th graders Jacob Blackwell, Drew Christesen, Wilman Midyett, Baylor Petty, and Connor Pilkington. The 5th graders are Dawson Conway, Dillon Fleener, Nina Howard, Autumn Morgan, Kennison Parker, and Jacob Terrill. The 6th graders include Londyn Cook, Sydney Gambill, Jimmy Metcalf, Kira Lacy, Noah Leathers, Megan Myslinski, and Mackenzie Whitaker. In the Individual Middle Division there is 7th grader Kristen Pike and 8th grader Tyler Pilkington. The event is free to watch and open to the public. Student archers who shoot a qualifying score at the state tournament will earn a spot at the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) World Championship in St. Louis on June 28th through June 30th at the America Center and Edward Jones Dome. MoNASP is coordinated through MDC and CFM in partnership with participating schools and numerous supporting organizations. MoNASP is an affiliate of NASP and promotes education, self-esteem and physical activity for students in grades 4-12 through participation in archery.

The Salem Tiger baseball team game tonight against Cuba in the Houston Tournament has been postponed and rescheduled for Tuesdayat 6:00.

Chris Stewart scored the game winner 45 seconds into overtime to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 2-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday at the Scottrade Center. Kris Russell added a power-play marker and Jake Allen stopped 27-of-28 shots to help the Blues earn their third straight victory. The Blues will be in Vancouver Tuesday to play the Canucks at 9:00.
Derrick Millinghaus made a driving basket with 1.1 seconds left on Friday as Mississippi rallied from a 14-point, second-half deficit to beat Missouri 64-62 in the Southeastern Conference tournament quarterfinals. Alex Oriakhi had 17 points for Missouri (22-10), who has been seeded 9th in the NCAA Tournament and will face 8th seeded Colorado State Thursday night.
Rob Brantly finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored on Sunday, as the Miami Marlins blanked the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0 in spring training action. Shane Robinson registered three of the Cardinals' seven hits, while St. Louis starter Lance Lynn allowed five runs on nine hits over 3 2/3 frames. The Cardinals will play the New York Mets this afternoon at 12:05.
Alex Gordon and Billy Butler each had two hits and knocked in two runs, as the Kansas City Royals thumped the Chicago White Sox, 10-0, in Cactus League action. Eric Hosmer went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while starter Luis Mendoza gave up four hits and struck out four over five innings. The Royals will play the Texas Rangers tonight at 8:05.
The St. Louis Rams signed free-agent left tackle Jake Long to a four-year contract Sunday. Long had spent his entire career with Miami since being selected with the first overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.
