Due to the failure of one of the sirens during last Thursdays testing of the emergency equipment during the statewide severe weather drill, the City of Salem Emergency Management Director Allen Kimrey and Mayor Gary Brown would like to inform and remind residents that the City of Salem will once again be testing the emergency equipment within the City of Salem this morning at 11:30. 

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage, missing money, disorderly conduct and theft. On Friday night, March 12^th at 11:30, an officer was detailed to the 200 block of East First Street in reference to property damage. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown had thrown a rock through a windowpane. On Sunday morning, March 14^th at 11:50, an officer was dispatched to West Center Street to the Consignment Store in reference to money missing. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took without permission $280 in cash. At 1:30 that afternoon, an officer was sent to Highway 32 West to the Smokers Outlet in reference to a person causing problems and refusing to leave the business. The report led to the arrest of a 50-year old Salem man for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. Then at 2:30 that same afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 300 block of East Truman in reference to a stealing incident. The victim reported there was two glass end tables valued at $150 that had been stolen. The investigation of the report revealed the end tables had been sold. The end tables were recovered and a 44-year-old Salem woman was arrested for the theft and issued a summons to appear in court and was released. Anyone with information on the property damage or stolen money reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their regular monthly meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After a calendar hearing, the Board will then approve the agenda including the minutes from the previous meeting along with bills, the attendance report, food service report and the substitute list. Following communications, Superintendent Steve Bryant will update the Board on legislative issues, the summer school for 2010, address some budget information, address student as well as staff recognitions and give a personnel report. In old business, the Board will consider BOE policies that were postponed from the February meeting. In new business, the Board will hear from the CIA-administrators on curriculum vertical teams, approve the career ladder plan, address the booster club financial reports, address a request for transportation from Project Graduation, set an organizational meeting date and address resignations. The Board will hear a request for a career ladder waiver, consider the MSBA policy service agreement, consider an agreement with LJ Hart and Co for underwriter services and approve the calendar for 2010/2011. The Board may then vote to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel and student discipline. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

Work is slated to begin soon on a project that will establish a new campsite arrangement and traffic flow pattern in a portion of Alley Spring Campground at Ozark National Scenic Riverways (ONSR). The campground is located on the upper Jacks Fork River and is one of the largest campgrounds in ONSR, receiving heavy visitation throughout much of the year. In recent years, regular flood events have taken a toll on several campsites and roads located nearest to the Jacks Fork River in Alley Spring Campground. The channel of the river has slowly migrated over time, cutting into the riverbank adjacent to the campground and causing significant erosion of some areas. This natural process has resulted in some problems for park staff and visitors, as well as increased safety concerns. The campground modifications will affect the 100, 200, and 300 campsite loops. Several sites will be removed from each loop so that the campsite arrangement and traffic flow can be reconfigured to allow retention of as many sites as possible. These modifications will not affect any campsite reservations due to the fact that these sites are located in the section of the campground that is considered “first-come, first-served”. Over half of the campsites will remain open throughout the construction period. During the week campers at these sites should expect to see and hear heavy landscaping equipment working nearby within the 100 and 200 loops, and adjacent to the 300 loop. Consequently, all three loops will be in some state of construction until completion by Memorial Day. Access to the loops may be hindered sporadically during the week. Directional signs will be posted to help orient visitors to the modified traffic flow patterns and campsite arrangement.  For more information, visit www.nps.gov/ozar.
