The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday in the city hall council chambers and approved the consent agenda that showed sales tax for the month of February at $98,219. For the year, the sales tax increase has been almost $13,000 and the capital improvements tax increase has been about $6,500. Alderman Jim McDaniels asked about the city park improvements but the conditions have been too wet for any work to be done. He asked about the parking lot at the northern side of the Al Brown Field and Mayor Gary Brown told him the City Engineer Bill Huffman was there last week shooting grades to see how much dirt needs to be dug out. City of Salem Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs showed the board the new brochure on visiting Salem and told them that she had been in contact with Sports Car Club of Missouri about Alderman McDaniels request to put up a sign recognizing Salem as the host of the 100 Acre Wood Road Rally. The Car Club was appreciative and supportive. Mayor Gary Brown reported that 45 people attended the recycling day held this past Saturday. He also reported that he has been working on the Safe Routes to School grant and a number of cities are applying, but Brown said since the city has its own sidewalk crew it may give Salem an advantage. Brown said that work crews are getting projects ready for the spring, and Brown wanted to remind people that federal energy tax credits are available for insulation, storm windows, even solar power. nd, would hold a tire collection day where they will accept your old car tires or large tires. There will be a charge of $1.50 for each small tire and $15 for each large tire. City Attorney Mark Weaver then read Bill #3124 which is an ordinance that would establish new electric rates for the city for both residential and commercial as well as the Salem Housing Authority and specific commercial industries with high demand. Mayor Brown passed out an electric calculation worksheet on how he came to recommend a 30% increase in electric rates so that the city could continue to support the Parks and Recreation program through the fund and also help subsidize the Police Department. Numerous questions were asked from the crowd concerning the proposed increase. Alderman Riley asked about the possibility of a sales tax to help cover the increase, but a tax cannot be used for electric. A tax could be passed for the parks department or for transportation. Those tax funds then could only be used for that particular fund if passed. The alderman then voted and Alderman McDaniels and Whitely voted for the increase while Alderman Jackson and Riley voted against the increase. Since this is an ordinance, Mayor Brown could not break the tie and the matter will have to be re-addressed at the next meeting. The board did approve the re-subdivision of lot 84, block W of the Douglass Addition before approving bills. The board then went into closed session
The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that crew members would be cleaning out culverts and catching up on routine maintenance. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that gravel would be hauled to Dent County Roads 3070, 3080, 3090 and 3100. The rest of the District 2 crew would be cleaning out culverts and catching up on routine maintenance. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a Public Housing Authority meeting and a MRPC meeting last Thursday in St. James. Skiles said the main topic of interest at the MRPC meeting was the recent electric rate increase for homes and businesses. At the waste management meeting it was mentioned that household hazardous waste could be dropped off by appointment only at the Rolla Recycling Center. For more information or to make an appointment call 573-364-6693, also there will be an Electronic and Tire Recycling Day on Saturday, April 12th in the Brewer Science parking lot, between the hours of 9 am and 1 pm. Sheriff Bob Wofford stopped by the meeting to give his monthly reports for January and February. At the previous meeting James Sapaugh came by and told the Commission that he could fix the courthouse chimneys for $250 and the Commission agreed for him to go ahead and fix them. The Commission also signed a maintenance agreement with VP/GM HOV Service Lason Inc. for the Recorder of Deeds office annual maintenance contract. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball/Softball/T-Ball Season is fast approaching. Sign-ups will be held in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center (formerly the National Guard armory). This league is for all boys and girls that are between 4 and 13-years of age. The last sign-ups will be held on Thursday, March 20th and Friday, March 21st from 4:00 to 6:00 and then on Saturday, March 22nd from 9:00 am to 12:00 (NOON). The cost is $15.00 per child. The Salem Baseball Tigers game Monday with Cabool at the Salem High School Baseball Field Complex was postponed due to rain and was to made up today at 4:00, weather permitting.
Rick Ankiel stroked a two-run double to lead St. Louis past Atlanta, 4-2, in Grapefruit League action. Aaron Miles and Joe Mather each drove in a run for the Cardinals. Starter Anthony Reyes hurled four innings of shutout ball while Russ Springer earned the win with a perfect relief inning. The Cardinals are 9-10 and 1 during this spring training.
St. Louis Cardinals have optioned pitchers Mike Parisi and Jason Motte and outfielder Joe Mather to Memphis (PCL); re-assigned pitcher Clayton Mortensen, catcher Mark Johnson and outfielder Colby Rasmus to minor league camp.
Mark Ellis went 2-for-5 with a double and run batted in, and the Oakland Athletics topped the Kansas City Royals, 6-2, in Cactus League play. Joey Gathright went 2-for-4 with a double, Tony Pena went 2-for-3 for the Royals. Brian Bannister gave up three runs on six hits in five innings of work, and took the loss. The Royals are 10-9 during this spring training.
The St. Louis Blues continue their disastrous road trip as they will be in Montreal tonight to face the Canadiens. The Blues have lost all six games on this road trip with three games left to go. You can hear the game on KSMO at 6:30.
