On March 9th, deputies from the Dent County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 400 block of Dent County Road 3280 in reference to the report a stolen motor vehicle. According to the owner of the vehicle, William Roulston, a 1983 model Chevrolet 4-wheel drive regular cab, short bed pickup had been stolen from his property. On March 12th, deputies received a call from a citizen reporting the possible location of the stolen truck. The truck was later recovered on Dent County Road 3135. As a result of the investigation, 51-year old James Poucher of Salem was arrested. More information on the incident was gathered by investigators and another arrest was made on Thursday, March 13th as 51-year old Ronald Breeding of Salem was also taken into custody. Poucher is being held on a $10,000 cash only bond and Breeding is being held on a $25,000 cash only bond.  

Congressman Jason Smith has announced that he will tour various timber related businesses in Missouri’s Eighth Congressional District this week. On Monday, Smith will begin his Timber Industry Tour with a visit to Kelly Frizzell’s logging site. According to Smith, timber is a leading industry in our Eighth Congressional District and it is essential to the health of our rural economy. Our district’s timber industry produces everything from pallets to fine walnut barrels, Smith said he is looking forward to the Timber Industry Tour and meeting the families who drive our region’s economy. The information learned on the Timber Industry Tour will be critical as policy is being created in Washington.

An accident occurred at 2:25 Sunday morning in Dent County on Highway 119 about nine miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 20-year old Kayla Hemken of Salem was driving a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser north when she swerved to miss a deer, traveled off the right side of the roadway, and overturned. Hemken suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chrysler was totaled and left at the scene per the owner’s request.

The City of Salem Planning & Zoning Commission will conduct a public hearing and meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 6:30 pm tonight. The public hearing and meeting will be in regards to a conditional use permit for 1600 Doss Road owned by the Riverways Pregnancy Resource Center. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will then start their meeting at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and minutes from their previous meeting, City Attorney Seay will report on the Planning & Zoning Commission public hearing and meeting. Then in unfinished business, at the last Board meeting, the Board was going to review the bids for cleanup of the property at 817 East Gibbs, owned by Darin and Tina Cook, but elected to wait until this meeting to see the progress that was being made on the cleanup. City Administrator Ray Walden will then update the Board on projects, happenings and other items concerning the city, and Mayor Gary Brown will then give his report on issues concerning Salem. During new and miscellaneous business, Waste Corporation has set the Spring Clean-Up (2 weeks) for the weeks of April 28th and May 5th with the Board’s approval. Alderman Nash wishes to discuss setting up a savings policy for the Electric Reserves Account. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing contracts. The public hearing and meeting of the Planning & Zoning Commission and the regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman to be held tonight is open to the public.

Michael Frazier II and Scottie Wilbekin had 15 points apiece and top ranked Florida pulled away for a 72-49 win over Missouri in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament on Friday. Jabari Brown had 18 points to lead eighth-seeded Missouri (22-11), which will host Davidson on Tuesday night in the 1st round of the NIT. Tip-off is set for 8:00.

Patrik Berglund scored twice and Ryan Miller turned away 30 shots as the St. Louis Blues prevailed over the Nashville Predators, 4-1. Alexander Steen and Vladimir Tarasenko also scored for the Blues, who have won seven of their last eight. The Blues will host Winnipeg tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:30.

Cory Vaughn went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and four RBI to lead the New York Mets to a 10-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in Grapefruit League action. Jhonny Peralta was 2-for-4 with an RBI while Greg Garcia, Jon Jay and Kolten Wong finished with one RBI apiece for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright was touched up for three runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. The Cardinals will play the Red Sox today at 12:05.

Brian Bocock and Whit Merrifield each had an RBI as part of a three-run 10th inning that lifted the Kansas City Royals to a 9-6 win over the San Diego Padres. Jason Donald added a two-run homer and Carlos Peguero stroked a solo shot for the Royals, who saw starter Jason Vargas surrender three runs on four hits over five innings. The Royals will play the Rangers this afternoon at 3:05.

Free agent offensive lineman Rodger Saffold is heading back to the St. Louis Rams. Two days after having an agreement in place with the Oakland Raiders that was voided by a failed physical, the four-year veteran re-signed a five-year contract with his original team. The Rams also signed linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar to a two-year contract on Friday. Dunbar had 39 tackles in 12 games last season, his second with the Rams. His 2013 season started with a four-game suspension.

The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed linebacker Frank Zombo and signed defensive lineman Vance Walker. Zombo played in all 16 games with five starts for the Chiefs last season and totaled 23 tackles, two sacks, one interception and one forced fumble. Walker started 15 games for the Raiders in 2013.

Funeral services for Albert “Lee” Vaughn of Salem, age 96, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Roberts Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Roberts Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lee F. Becherer of Salem, age 87, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 tonight. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win.

Funeral services for Nicholas S. Asbridge of Rolla, age 84, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rolla. A prayer service will be held Tuesday at 4:30 with visitation that day from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorial services for Ed Pope of Steelville, age 80, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until service time on Wednesday at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
