The Salem Park Board met Tuesday night at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash reported Salem Wood Products has agreed to sponsor the Fall Soccer Program. He said that Progressive Ozark Bank currently sponsors the Summer Ball Program and the Bank Of Salem sponsors the Basketball Program. Nash also said they are currently restoring water service in the city park facilities, but there was vandalism in the men’s restroom in the park. The urinal and toilet stool ripped out and were broken on the concrete floor, plus pipes were broken off. Victor Plumbing was replacing the stool and urinal, and repairing the pipes. The cost was going to be about $1,000 when it was finished. Nash said that a police report was filed. In the pool report, Nash said that last year the pool lost close to $23,000. The pool and program rates were discussed, and a committee was formed to study pool rates and look for other methods of generating income for the pool. The board also discussed the baseball, soccer and basketball programs and their sign-up fees. At this time, each child is charged $15 per program. After some discussion, the board felt that rates need to be raised to $20 per program and will present that rate at the next aldermen meeting for their approval. Director Nash then reported on the youth basketball leagues that started up the first of March with approximately 200 kids from 1st-6th grades that participated in the program. Most of the games and clinics were held on Saturdays in the high school gymnasium with practices held weekday evenings at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. The board then discussed and planned for the upcoming youth baseball/softball season. Nash reported sign-ups for boys and girls from four to 14 years of age would be held March 24th, 25th, 31st and April 1st at the Salem Freedom Activity Center front lobby from 4-6 p.m. There will also be a sign-up on Saturday March 26th in the High School Gymnasium Lobby from 8:30 am-noon as that is the last Saturday of the Youth Basketball Season. The baseball season will start around the first of May and run through the 4th of July. There was also a discussion about the batting cage issue that has been lingering for years and it is hoped that it can be included in the upcoming budget. The program last year had about 700 children play in the program. The soccer field issue was then discussed and Nash said that very little has been done to the Highway 19 South location as some other locations are being considered due to the high cost of providing service to that location. The DNR grant for the soccer fields is good through December 31, 2012 and the city can ask for a one-year extension. The board then elected new officers with S.N. Ball being elected President, Jody Heavin was elected Vice-President and Stacy Kirker was elected as Secretary. In other business, Ball spoke about the possibility of a competitive baseball organization holding some tournaments in Salem. Nash and Ball will be discussing this matter with the tournament director to see there is some interest in using Salem as a site. The meeting was then adjourned.
