A couple of accidents occurred in Dent County Monday evening. The first happened at 5:30 pm on Highway 32 about 13 miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Jeep Liberty driven by 28-year old Kacey Winter of Bixby was traveling eastbound on Highway 32 and began sliding on the slush-covered roadway. The Jeep ran off the left side of the roadway and overturned. Winter suffered minor injuries and transported to the Salem Hospital by the Salem ambulance. A passenger, 20-year old Crystal Lockwood of Bixby suffered minor injuries and was transported by a private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Another passenger, 5-year old Lukis Glasbie of Bixby suffered moderate injuries and transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem ambulance. Lockwood was the only one not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Jeep Liberty sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The second accident happened at 5:55 pm on Highway 19 about eight miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Ford F150 pickup driven by 41-year old Lisa Blackwell of Salem was traveling southbound on Highway 19. The Ford began sliding on the snow-covered roadway, ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. Blackwell suffered serious injuries and was transported by the Salem ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford pickup sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their meeting on Thursday, March 10^th at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the previous meeting, bills were paid and file copies were signed. The Board reviewed and approved the calendar, with the Salem Memorial District Hospital Auxiliary scheduled to have a jewelry sale on April 7^th and 8^th. For the month of February there were 26 calls recorded. There were three calls for structure fires, three calls for flue fires, four calls for brush fires and one call for a car fire. Also recorded were two calls to create a landing zone, six first responder calls, three calls for motor vehicle accidents, two mutual aid calls, one call for a training session and one call for a meeting. In old business, it was reported that the roof settlement is in progress with no response from the company at this time. Fire Chief Brad Nash reported that the 100-Acre Wood Rally ran very smoothly. He also reported that the station inventory in still in progress, Ladder #81 is back and in service and the new phone system is installed and working. Nash then discussed a new computer for the office with dual screens, which the Board approved and then addressed the condition of the floors in the offices and the show room. There were presentations for the refinishing of the floors and the Board asked for further information. The Board then set their next meeting for April 5^th at the fire station and the meeting was then adjourned. In Closed Session, the Board voted to reinstate Derek Thomas.

Young Missourians have an opportunity for a summer job while learning new skills and discovering Missouri state parks and historic sites. Information about this year’s State Parks Youth Corps will be provided at a job fair today at Dillard Mill State Historic Site near Viburnum. The job fair will be held from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the site’s office. Staff from Dillard Mill State Historic Site will be available to answer questions about the program and what opportunities are available for this year. The State Parks Youth Corps will provide jobs for youth 17-21 years of age from April 1^st through November 30^th. Youth will earn $7.25 an hour and work throughout the state, enhancing and improving Missouri state parks and historic sites. The program also will provide them with work experience and an opportunity to learn new skills and possible careers in natural resources. Youth corps members will perform a variety of tasks from routine maintenance work and trail construction to guided tours and social media efforts. Dent County University of Missouri Extension will be offering a Private Pesticide Applicator Training Program on Thursday, March 17th at 6:30 pm at the Extension Office Conference Room located on the second floor of the Judicial Building in Salem. Will McClain, University of Missouri Extension Agronomy Specialist will be instructing this course for those who wish to purchase and apply restricted-use pesticides. By participating in this training session, individuals will meet the Missouri Department of Agriculture requirements to obtain a license to purchase and apply restricted-use pesticides for private use. Those individuals who need to renew an expiring restricted-use pesticide license are eligible to attend this session to have those licenses renewed. There is no charge for this course, however, participants are now required to purchase the new “Private Pesticide Applicator Reference Manual” to be eligible to renew or apply for a license. Cost of the manual is $12. The course will take approximately 2 hours to complete. This course is only for those people who produce agriculture commodities (farmers) and who desire to apply these pesticides for private use.
