The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done and rock would be added to Dent County Roads 5580, 6090 and 6470. He also said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5580 and 6190. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that many roads are still soft and rock will be added to Dent County Roads 2120, 2180, 2185, 2190, 3130, 3330, 4060 and 4280. He said that light grading would be done where possible on those roads where rock is added. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended the Public Housing Authority meeting in St. James last Thursday and besides rental assistance, they have two programs set up to help people: the Family Self-Sufficiency Program with 86 families where the PHA works with the families to help them budget money to be self-sufficient with the hope that one day they can buy a home, and the Home Ownership Program where the PHA helps families purchase homes and this program has 11 families in it. He also said that the Highway 63 project came in 2nd out of 32 projects presented in the statewide planning prioritization for state highways to be worked on if money can be found. He also said that the MRPC voted to approve a Regional Community Foundation that can help the local community foundations within the region. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that the voting machines would be tested on March 23rd at 9:00. She also said that absentee voting for the April municipal election would continued until April 5th, and the last day to ask for a ballot to be mailed out will be March 31st. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening in the city hall council chambers. At the meeting, the board approved to purchase a backhoe for the Street Department from Erb Equipment of Cuba for $67,398. The mayor will work with the budget to find money for the down payment and also look for the best rates for a lease purchase agreement. The city will then sell the oldest backhoe. In the consent agenda, sales tax revenues increased about $10,000 for the month of January that leaves the city with about $13,000 less sales tax income than last year. The nuisance report also indicated that there were 14 letters sent to people to demolish or repair certain buildings or sheds within the city limits. Bill Huffman then gave the report from the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting held prior to the Board meeting on a building permit for 1200 South Center Street on property owned by Larry Maxwell. Huffman said that the recommendation was to enforce the building code on the setback and that would deny the permit. Alderman McDaniels made a motion to allow the building permit to be issued, and Alderman Jim Jackson seconded his motion. Alderman Kenneth Nash agreed and the measure was approved to allow the building permit to be issued on a 3-1 vote. Mayor Gary Brown said that the airport fuel system is now online and working, and he said that a storm spotter course would be held at the Dent County Fire Station on April 1st at 6:30. Mayor Brown said that the Business Expo would be held on Saturday, April 10th at the High School Gymnasium, and that the stove at the Salem Freedom Activity Center would be donated to the Emergency Management Agency at the Dent County Fire Station. Brown said that the City of Salem assisted the City of Bunker with a backed up sewer problem, and have decided not to charge them for the job that lasted about an hour. Alderman McDaniels asked about storm water ditches and Street Department Superintendent Benny Bryson said that many of them have been cleaned out including the area between 3rd Street and Rolla Road. Alderman Kenneth Nash asked that all departments give reports for the aldermen to review. Alderman Brad Nash asked that the board review the city policy on deaths in the family and bereavement leave. The board approved Bill #3193 allowing the mayor to sign an agreement between the city and Regional Credit Services to collect outstanding utility bills, and they approved holding Spring Clean-Up weeks the weeks of April 19th and 26th. After the bills were approved, the meeting was adjourned.
