In front of a jammed pack crowd Saturday night at the Salem City Hall Auditorium for the 58^th Annual Variety Show and Miss Salem Pageant, Rebecca Potts was crowned the 2009 Miss Salem by the 2008 Miss Salem Allison Hall. Moody Real Estate was the proud sponsor of Rebecca. The first runner-up went to Houlie Ibrahim sponsored by South-Town Furniture, and the second runner-up was presented to Sierra Daniels sponsored by Common Grounds. Jaclyn Rutland, sponsored by Cousins Pawn Shop, was named Miss Personality in the competition. The Cosmopolitan Club thanks all those who attended the show and also thanks all the girls and the acts that made the show possible.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving a burglary. A call came in at 10:10 pm on Thursday, March 5^th of a report of a burglary on C Highway. The resident reported that an unknown person or persons had taken a 50” TV, which was on consignment from Keller Rental. There were no signs of forced entry and although there were numerous other valuables in the residence, none were taken. Anyone with any information regarding the missing TV, which is still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. In bids, the City of Salem advertised for sealed bids for the purchase of a used Knight 8014 Manure Spreader and received bids from the City of Van Buren for $6,500, from S & H Farm Supply in Lockwood a bid for $7,950 and from R & M Motors from Berlin, Wisconsin a bid for $7,995. The City advertised for sealed proposals for the furnishing of employee uniforms on a three-year contract beginning May 1, 2009 and lasting until April 10, 2012 and those bids will also be addressed. Aldermen Bill Riley, Jim Jackson, Kenneth Nash and Jim McDaniels will discuss miscellaneous items involving the City of Salem. McDaniels would also like to discuss the recycling of gravel off the streets, the planting of trees, businesses in Salem, discuss junk cars in the City limits and electric poles. Mayor Gary Brown will discuss items involving the City of Salem along with stimulus money. During the reading of bills, Bill #3160 an ordinance to authorize the Mayor to execute a quit-claim deed between the City of Salem and Yellow Bear, L.L.C. requested at the last meeting by the Board for signing, will be presented. In new and miscellaneous business, Waste Management has given the weeks of April 27^th and May 4^th for the annual Spring Clean-Up if approved by the Board. Sharon Tubbs will be requesting the Board to review and consider adopting a new marketing logo for Salem; and Chief Jadwin is wanting to address the Board about applying for a grant to assist law enforcement to combat violence against women, to fight internet crimes against children and more. After the approval of bills, the Board will then go into Closed Session. The meeting tonight is open to the public. 

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will perform edge rut repairs on Routes C, H and O in Dent County beginning Tuesday. Weather permitting, crews and equipment will be on the roadway between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  Edge rut repair work requires placing material at the edge of the roadway and is necessary to reduce shoulder drop off. While doing this work, crews and equipment are located directly on or near the roadway. Motorists are urged to exercise caution when moving through the work zone.

DeMarre Carroll poured in a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds, as 14th-ranked Missouri ended Baylor's unlikely run with a 73-60 triumph for the program's first ever Big 12 Tournament title on Saturday. Missouri (28-6), the league's No. 3 seed, limped into the conference tourney with losses in two of its last three games, including a 10-point loss on the road to Texas A&M. But three victories by a combined 42 points at Ford Center has left the Tigers a fairly high seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Leo Lyons chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds, while Matt Lawrence checked in with a 13-point effort as well for the Tigers who shot at an amazing 49% clip. Missouri will face Cornell Friday in the NCAA Tournament as they are seeded third in the West Region.

Brad Boyes had a goal and an assist, and the St. Louis Blues dealt another blow to Minnesota's playoff hopes by topping the Wild, 5-3. Keith Tkachuk, Brad Winchester, David Backes and David Perron scored for the Blues, who have won seven of 10 overall. Chris Mason made 19 saves to earn the victory after the Blues dropped a 5-2 decision to Detroit on Saturday.

The Cardinal pocket schedules have arrived and are available around town and at the KSMO Radio Station lobby.

Jayson Werth went 2-for-3 with a solo homer to lead the Phillies past the Cardinals, 2-1, in spring training action. Brendan Ryan drove in the lone run for St. Louis in defeat. Kyle Lohse went five innings and gave up a run on five hits with five strikeouts. Jess Todd took the loss after giving up the winning run in the ninth.

Mark Teahen went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and a pair of solo home runs, as the Kansas City Royals hammered the San Francisco Giants, 11-3, in spring training. Mike Jacobs hit a two-run homer and Tony Pena had three hits with one run driven in for the Royals, whose starter, Luke Hochevar, allowed a run on six hits in 4 1/3 frames to pick up the win.

The St. Louis Rams released long-time wideout Torry Holt on Friday. The 32-year-old played his entire 10-year career with the Rams, racking up 869 receptions for 12,660 yards and 74 touchdowns in 158 contests.

The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to terms with free agent linebacker Corey Mays on Friday. Mays, age 25, played in 12 games last year for the Cincinnati Bengals, recording 16 tackles and a forced fumble.

The Kansas City Chiefs named Clancy Pendergast as their next defensive coordinator on Friday. Pendergast had served as the Cardinals' defensive coordinator from 2004-08 but was let go this off season despite Arizona reaching Super Bowl XLIII.

Graveside services for La Vaughn Luebbert of St. James, age 76, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the Highgate Baptist Cemetery in Highgate. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of St. James.

Funeral services for Robert E. Harris of Edgar Springs, age 75, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Edgar Springs. Memorials are suggested to the Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Funeral services for Norma Jean Todd of Steelville, age 67, will be held Tuesday at noon at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 today. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery in Boss.

Funeral services for Hinton” Willie” Chafin, Jr. age 88, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 Tuesday at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church Youth. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:00 Tuesday night and full military honors will be held at the cemetery.

Funeral services for Verla Ellen Floyd of Salem, age 71, will be held Thursday evening at 6:30 at the Church of Christ in Salem, with visitation to follow under the direction of the Day Funeral Home in Marshfield. Interment will be in the Westlawn Cemetery in Geering, Nebraska on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pregnancy Center in Salem.
