The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done east of Salem on Dent County Road 517 and in the Wisdom Subdivision. Simpson also said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 619, 638 and South of Salem on Dent County Road 552. Simpson also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 240 and 609. Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 211, 308, 309, 310, 437 and 526, and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 524. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind everyone that the Route H dedication ceremony to Deputy JoAnn Barnes would be held today at 11:00 at the Commons. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the clerk’s office has mailed out 33 absentee voting ballots and have received 14 back. Commissioner Simpson received a letter and certificate from the Division of Labor Standards recognizing the Dent County Road and Bridge Crew for being accident free for one year. At the previous meeting, Sheriff Bob Wofford stopped by to give the Commission his monthly statistics and past due board bills. There will not be a Commissioners meeting Monday, March 19^th due to the absence of Commissioner Tune and Commissioner Simpson who will be attending a local Grant Meeting in Reynolds County regarding a Fire Station and Community Center in Bunker. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports for March 9^th involving illegal dumping and property damage. At 9:28 in the morning on March 9^th, an officer was detailed to the Industrial Park in reference to illegal dumping. A 26-year old Salem male was arrested for illegal dumping. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that evening at 6:30, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown had cut both tires on the driver side of a vehicle belonging to an individual from Bunker. The report is still under investigation. Then at 11:00 pm that night while on patrol, an officer discovered a pickup stuck on an embankment of a parking lot in the 300 block of North Highway 19. The investigation led to the arrest of a 20-year old Salem male for damage to private property. He was issued a summons for the property damage and released to appear in court. Colonel James F. Keathley, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the arrests of 33-year old Rodney W. Shockley of Summersville, MO, and 36-year old Joey W. Shepard of Laquey, MO. Shockley and Shepard were arrested in Pulaski County on March 12, 2007, for receiving stolen property related to cattle theft. Both Shockley and Shepard are currently being held in the Pulaski County Jail. The Governor’s Cattle Theft Task Force, working out of Troop D Headquarters, Springfield, spearheaded the investigation, which resulted in the recovery of approximately 25 head of stolen cattle. The cattle were stolen in Shannon County and recovered in Laclede and Pulaski counties. The investigation continues and it is expected that more cattle will be found. The estimated value of the animals exceeds $15,000. The process of returning the cattle to their original owner continues. Texas County Sheriff Carl Watson and Pulaski County Sheriff J.B. King assisted the Governor’s Cattle Theft Task Force with this investigation. The success of this investigation also can be attributed to the collective effort and cooperation between law enforcement agencies.

Child Check 2007, a developmental screening for children in Dent County between the ages of birth to five, will be held next Friday, March 23^rd, at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. The screening is FREE for all Dent County residents. To make an appointment, call 729-2578. This year at the event, McGruff the Crime Dog will be in attendance as well as the Dent County Fire Protection District and Salem Police Department.

Daniel Sedin tipped in the winning goal on the power play, 1:09 into overtime, as the Canucks topped St. Louis, 3-2, winning for the sixth time in eight games. Henrik Sedin and Trevor Linden both scored for the Canucks, who also received 20 saves from Roberto Luongo. Jamal Mayers and Petr Cajanek scored in the third period to rally the Blues, who have dropped three in a row and five of six. Curtis Sanford made 34 saves in a losing cause. St. Louis has just two wins in its last 11 visits to Vancouver, and the teams has lost four of its last five games, three of them in overtime. The Blues will be in Edmonton on Saturday to face the Oilers starting at 7:00.

Juan Pierre went 3-for-3 and also knocked in a run as the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-2, in Grapefruit League action. Tagg Bozied went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Chris Duncan smacked a solo home run in the ninth for St. Louis. Returning from off-season hip surgery, Jason Isringhausen turned in a solid performance for the Cardinals. He allowed just two infield hits and one strikeout in a scoreless frame. Adam Wainwright came on in relief and worked five innings. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks. The Cardinals will face the Atlanta Braves tomorrow and New York Mets of Sunday, and you can hear both games at 11:45 on KSMO.

The 2007 St. Louis Cardinal Baseball pocket schedules are now available at the KSMO studios and will also be available at numerous locations in town this weekend including Progressive Ozark Bank, K & H Auto Supply, the Bank of Salem, Country Mart, Mooney Auto Supply and Town and Country Bank.

Mike Sweeney had two hits and drove in three runs, as Kansas City edged the Giants, 7-6, in Cactus League play. Jason LaRue knocked in two runs, while Alex Gordon had three hits and scored twice for the Royals. Jorge De La Rosa allowed three hits and two runs through four innings for the Royals.

Spring Sports have arrived! The Salem Baseball Tigers will play Willow Springs at 4:00 on Monday in the SCA Pre-Season Tournament.

The Salem Track Boys and Girls Teams will be in action beginning Monday at the Rolla Open.

Memorial services for Janice M. Gahr of Steelville, age 64, will be held today at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for John Thomas Adams of Rolla, age 19, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Vienna United Methodist Church in Vienna. All arrangements are under direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Memorials are suggested Vienna United Methodist Church or to CORE for the Rolla High School Athletic Department.

Funeral services for Ruby La Vina Barton of Rolla, age 84, will be held March 21^st at 11:00 at the Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla and Sillin Funeral Home of Lyons, Kansas.
