In front of a capacity crowd Saturday night at the Salem City Hall Auditorium for the 59th Annual Variety Show and Miss Salem Pageant, Rachel Arts was crowned Miss Salem 2010 by the 2009 Miss Salem Rebecca Potts. Chilton Oil Company was the proud sponsor of Rachel, who was also named Miss Personality in the competition. The first runner-up went to Lacey Rice sponsored by P’Zaz Hair Salon. The Cosmopolitan Club thanks all those who attended the show and also thanks all the girls and the acts that made the show possible.

An accident occurred at 1:00 in the morning in Dent County on Dent County Road 6400 southwest of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Chevrolet Pickup driven by 25-year old David Blankenship of Salem, was traveling south on Dent County Road 6400 when the vehicle traveled off the left side of the road and struck a tree. Blankenship suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Salem Memorial District Hospital. Blankenship was not wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and was removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will conduct their meeting tonight at 7:00 in the City Hall Council Chambers. After approval of the consent agenda, bids will be reviewed for the purchase of a new backhoe for the Street Department. Sean Curley will then report on the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting that will be held prior to the Aldermen’s meeting for a building permit at 1200 West Center Street. Mayor Gary Brown will then request that testing of the emergency sirens be done again next Thursday since one of the sirens failed to sound during the last test. He will also give some other thoughts on items affecting the city. Alderman Jim McDaniels will discuss streetlights, storm water, and other miscellaneous items. Aldermen Jim Jackson, Kenneth Nash and Brad Nash will also discuss miscellaneous items. City Clerk Mary Happel will then present bill number 3193 authorizing the Mayor to execute and agreement between the City of Salem and the Regional Credit Services for collection of accounts receivable. In new business, Waste Management will request approval from the board to hold the Spring Clean-Up the weeks of April 19th and April 26th. The Board will then go into closed session. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

Senator Frank Barnitz is planning to host a meeting on Friday, March 19th for small business owners and entrepreneurs in the 16th District to get information about state programs and services that could help their business. The meeting will be held at 6:00 pm in Rolla at the Havener Center on the Missouri University of Science and Technology campus. The meeting will include presentations by representatives from the Missouri Department of Economic Development and Missouri Technology Corporation. Workforce development, tax incentives, and ways to better utilize technology are some of the areas that could be discussed. Lieutenant Colonel Allen Rolfing will speak about the Show-Me Heroes program, a new initiative in the state to connect military veterans with job opportunities and Richard LaBrash, owner of DefBar Systems in Salem, will also address the crowd about his experience with state programs and services and how they have helped him to develop and expand his business. The event will also include an extended question and answer portion so that those in attendance can ask questions and discuss any possible concerns.

An accident occurred at 3:30 last Monday afternoon in Dent County on Route ZZ about four miles south of Jadwin. According to the highway patrol report, a 1993 Harley Davidson driven by 49-year old Ronald Nauta of Raymondville was traveling southbound. Nauta was attempting to avoid an accident ahead and began skidding. Nauta lost control and ran off the left side of the roadway where the Harley overturned, ejecting the driver and an occupant, 50-year old Jerrie Nauta and the Harley came to rest in the ditch. Jerrie Nauta suffered minor injury and Ronald Nauta suffered moderate injury. Both were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by Salem EMS. The Harley sustained minor damage and was removed by a private vehicle.

The Missouri Tigers will be in the Big Dance as they will face Clemson Friday afternoon at 1:45. You can hear that game on KSMO Radio.

Mizzou Basketball had three representatives named to various All-Big 12 teams, as Kim English and Zaire Taylor were named All-Big 12 and senior J.T. Tiller was named to the All-Defensive Team for the second consecutive year. English was named to the Third Team and Taylor was an honorable mention pick. Kim English was also named to the United States Basketball Writers Association All-District VI team. The USBWA All-District VI covers the states of Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Allen Craig and Nick Stavinoha each had two hits and knocked in a run, as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Washington Nationals, 7-3, in Grapefruit League action. Ruben Gotay, David Freese, and Joe Mather also drove in a run for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright went four innings in the start, allowing two runs on three hits. Adam Ottavino tossed a scoreless two frames of relief to get the win. The Cards play the New York Mets today.

Jake Fox slugged a three-run homer and Rajai Davis knocked in two with a pair of hits to help Oakland top Kansas City, 10-3, in Cactus League action. Kyle Davies was roughed up for six runs and seven hits with three walks over 2 2/3 innings for the Royals. Vance Wilson hit a two-run home run in the loss. The Royals play the Chicago White Sox tonight.

The St. Louis Blues dropped a 4-2 decision to Minnesota last night to finish their six game road trip with a 4-2 record. Saturday night, the Blues defeated Columbus by the score of 5-1. The Blues will host Colorado Tuesday night at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed defensive tackle Shaun Smith, wide receiver Jerheme Urban, and veteran center Casey Wiegmann.

The St. Louis Rams re-signed tight end Daniel Fells.

The long awaited 2010 St. Louis Cardinals pocket schedules have arrived. They are available at local merchants around town or in the front lobby of the KSMO Radio Station as well as at number of sponsor locations around town.

Funeral services for Lloyd Jasper Blackwell of Salem, age 90, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Blackwell Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Osage Beach Health Care Center.

Funeral services for Dean L. Tucker of Farmington, formerly of Salem, age 80, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.

Funeral services for Leo Cardetti of St. James, age 81, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Rosati, MO.  A special prayer service will be held Tuesday at 5:00 pm and visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James.  Interment will be in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Historical Society or St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery. 

Funeral services for Peggy Jean Bond of St. Louis, age 83, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Kissock Cemtery. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude’s Children Research or the American Cancer Society.
