The Missouri Department of Natural Resources Director Doyle Childers has announced that The Dent County Soil and Water Conservation District has been selected to receive the Department of Natural Resources Director's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Implementation of Best Management Practices on Grasslands. Director Childers will be presenting the Director's Award to Dent County at its annual meeting tonight at 6:00 PM at the Salem United Methodist Church located at 801 Highway 32/72. Best Management Practices were implemented on 3,768 acres of grassland in the Dent County Soil and Water Conservation District in fiscal year 2006, including intensive grazing systems, permanent vegetative cover establishments and permanent vegetative cover improvements. These practices reduce erosion and improve water quality by increasing the amount of quality forage available on grasslands.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their regular monthly meeting tonight beginning at 7:00 PM in the district administrative offices. After the approval of the agenda, the consent agenda will include the approval of the minutes from the previous meeting, along with bills, the attendance report, food service report and substitute list followed by communications. Legislative news, the Dent County School Administrators meeting, the 2007 Summer School registration and the Economic Development Advisory meeting will be addressed in Superintendent Steve Bryant’s report. Bryant will also give an update on the Committee for Educational Equality meeting, a PTO report and a High School Assessment. The Salem R-80 Board will recognize member John Boyle for years of service. Also in new business will be the approval of a Career Ladder Plan, a request for a Career Ladder Waiver, the Board will amend the 2006-2007 school calendar as well as propose the 2007-2008 school calendar. The Board will then consider establishing a Salem R-80 Educational Foundation, discuss budget revisions, consider MSBA Policy Service Agreement, and set an organizational meeting date. The Board will then go into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and discipline. The regular meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education tonight is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports for March 7^th and 8^th involving assault, disorderly conduct, and drugs. On March 7^th at 1:00 in the morning, an officer was sent to the Salem Memorial District Hospital in reference to an assault. The report revealed that a 17-year old Salem female had been assaulted by a 20-year old Salem male. The man was arrested, issued a summons for assault and released to appear in court. On March 8^th at 12:30 in the afternoon, a report of disorderly individuals at Subway was received by the Salem Police Department. A vehicle description was given which later led to a vehicle stop of the subjects. The investigation led to the arrest of a 22-year old Kinkaid, Illinois man for disorderly conduct and driving while having his license suspended. He posted $1,000 bond and was released to appear in court. At 6:49 the same evening, a vehicle was stopped for a license plate violation. The investigation during the stop led to the use of the Salem K-9, which alerted officers on the vehicle. An 18-year old Salem male was arrested for possession of marijuana. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later the same evening at 9:00, an officer was sent to the 1800 block of South Oak in reference to a fight. The report stated that a 47-year old Salem female was arrested for disorderly conduct and assault. She was issued a summons and released to appear in court. Anthony Reyes put together another strong start, as the St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Nationals played to a 2-2 deadlock in Grapefruit League action. Reyes allowed just one hit and struck out two over 4 1/3 innings. The right- hander has allowed just one run on two hits, striking out six and walking two, over 10 innings this spring. He is vying to become one of the aces of the St. Louis staff. Scott Rolen homered and Aaron Miles drove in the other run for the Cardinals, who finished the 10-inning affair with seven hits.

Mark Teahen went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run in the third inning as Kansas City topped Colorado, 6-2, in Cactus League action. Alex Gordon collected a pair of hits including a triple and scored a run for the Royals. Starter Zach Greinke picked up the win by scattering four hits over four innings of work.

Brandon Heath posted a game-high 26 points to lead the San Diego State Aztecs to a 74-70 victory over the Missouri State Bears in the opening round of the NIT from the Hammons Student Center. Deven Mitchell scored 16 points to lead the Bears (22-11), while Drew Richards and Blake Ahearn added 15 points apiece. Nathan Bilyeu chipped in only six points, but pulled down 10 rebounds in the loss. San Diego State held Missouri State to a meager 30.3 percent from the floor during the first period, enabling the Aztecs to take a 34-29 lead into the break. San Diego State will face Syracuse in the second round of the NIT on Monday.

The St. Louis Blues road trip continues as they will be in Vancouver tonight to face the Canucks at 9:00. The Blues have lost three of their last four games. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

“March Madness,” the quest for the NCAA Basketball Championship, kicks into high gear today starting out with 16 first round games. Tomorrow will be a repeat of today before the weekend will bring eight games each day to basketball enthusiasts in North America.

Funeral services for Martha Ellen Claus of St. James, age 60, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James Interment will be in the Wishon Cemetery in Phelps County.

Memorial services for Janice M. Gahr of Steelville, age 64, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held 4:00 to 7:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for John Thomas Adams of Rolla, age 19, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Vienna United Methodist Church in Vienna. All arrangements are under direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Memorials are suggested Vienna United Methodist Church or to CORE for the Rolla High School Athletic Department.

Funeral services for Orval L. Hannell of Viburnum, age 68, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
