The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5150, 5450, 5440, and 2400 while materials would be added to 5150 and 2400. Purcell also stated that crews would be removing snow removal equipment, cleaning it, and then putting a protective coat on them before storage. Crews would also be checking the chip and seal patcher. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that his crew would be traveling to Cuba to get hotmix for County Road 6150 and would have the patch roller out. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles stated that he would be attending a Public Housing Authority meeting in St. James on Thursday as well as an MRPC board meeting that night. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said the last day to absentee vote for the April 8th election would be April 7th. Curley also stated that the last day to ask for a ballot to be mailed out is April 2nd. The polls will open at 6:00 am on Tuesday, April 8th and they will close at 7:00 pm and sample ballots are available at her office. Curley also said that several districts and boards will not be holding elections and if you have any questions you can call her office at 729-4144. The Commission then agreed to seek bids for 250 plat books with the option to purchase more as well as 25 large wall maps. Those bids will be accepted until April 14th at 10:00 in the morning. The next meeting will be Monday at the Dent County Courthouse at 9:00 and it is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of February. During the month, they wrote 14 equipment repair orders, 20 summons to appear in court, 20 warning tickets, and 28 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 15 accidents, two assaults, six reports of disorderly conduct, six reports of domestic violence, two reports of driving while intoxicated, two reports of failure to obey lawful order of a police officer, and two reports of leaving the scene of an accident. The department also investigated one report of a missing person, one report of a missing and/or runaway juvenile, one report of a peace disturbance, one report of property damage, two reports of resisting and/or interfering with an arrest, one report of stalking, 12 reports of stealing, one report of tampering, one report of trespassing, one violation of an exparte or full order of protection and two 96-hour commitments. They also investigated one report of possession of marijuana and one report of possession of drug paraphernalia. The police department received 1,565 calls for service during the month, handled 91 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 59 calls to the animal control officer. The Salem Police Department also conducted two death investigations. They spent 12 hours in court testifying, four hours as court bailiff and spent 18 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in February included 19 calls for escorts, two calls for an intoxicated driver, three calls for prowlers, three calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, one intoxicated pedestrian call, 15 calls for domestic disputes, eight calls for a wrecker. There were four 911 calls, three calls for peace disturbances, 13 calls for alarms sounding, three calls for fights in progress, nine ambulance assist calls, and two fire calls.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 9,280 miles and arrested 18 males and 2 females during the month of February.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Office announced they are joining with statewide law enforcement March 15th thru 31st for an aggressive youth seat belt Mobilization to crack down on Missouri’s seat belt law violators and to reduce highway fatalities. Only 67 percent of Missouri teens wear their seat belts when driving or riding in a motor vehicle. Eight out of ten teens killed in traffic crashes are unbuckled. Under the Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) law, teens are required to wear their seat belt, as it’s a primary offense, meaning they can be pulled over solely for not wearing their seat belt. “Local motorists should be prepared for stepped up seat belt enforcement,” said Sheriff Stallings  “We’ll be out there to remind you seat belts can – and do – save lives.” Seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce motor vehicle fatalities.

More of the Fall and Winter Salem Tiger sports awards have been announced. For volleyball, Morgan Hailey was named 2nd Team All-SCA while Kelsey Michno was named All-SCA Honorable Mention. Breanna Piatt was named 2nd Team All District. Michno and Hannah Jadwin were also named Academic All-State. The Lady Tiger Softball team was well represented as named 1st Team All-SCA were Cortney Putman and Savannah Hanning. Putman was also named SCA Player of the Year. Kirsten Strebe and Camryn Pryor were named 2nd Team All SCA. Named to the All-SCA Honorable Mention Team were Taylor Frizzell, Gabriel Sanderson, and Kari Hatridge. Putman, Frizzell, and Sanderson were also named Academic All-State. For Lady Tiger basketball, Savannah Hanning was named First Team All SCA and Payton Curley was named All-SCA Honorable Mention. For the boy’s basketball team, Cody Whitaker was named 1st Team All-SCA and Logan Pogue was named All-SCA Honorable Mention. 

Jabari Brown scored 26 points and Earnest Ross added 24 points as the Missouri Tigers outlasted the Texas A&M Aggies, 91-83, in double overtime in the SEC Tournament at the Georgia Dome. Missouri will play Florida, the top ranked team in the nation, today in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 11:30 this morning.

Jaden Schwartz scored twice in a four-goal third period, which lifted St. Louis over Edmonton, 6-2, at Scottrade Center. Alex Pietrangelo and T.J. Oshie also lit the lamp in the final frame for the Blues. St. Louis will be in Nashville Saturday night to face the Predators and you can hear that game on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:30.

Xavier Scruggs highlighted a seven-run sixth inning with a three-run double as the St. Louis Cardinals shut out the Atlanta Braves, 11-0, in Grapefruit League action. Lance Lynn recorded 10 strikeouts and allowed only one hit in four innings. The Cardinals will play the Astros today at 12:05. The Cards will also play the Braves on Saturday and Mets on Sunday. Matt Carson had three RBI as the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals, 12-6, in Cactus League play. Eric Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a solo homer for the Royals, who will play the Oakland Athletics today at 3:05.

Graveside services for Linda Sue Parker of Salem, age 56, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. 

Funeral services for Marie A. Copeland of St. Louis will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and Alzheimer’s Association.

Funeral services for Albert “Lee” Vaughn of Salem, age 96, will be held Monday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 Stoday. Interment will be in the Roberts Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Roberts Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lee F. Becherer of Salem, age 87, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 Monday. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win.

Memorial services for Ed Pope of Steelville, age 80, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until service time on Wednesday.
