Missouri landowners interested in participating in the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) should apply by Friday, March 15th to be considered for the next round of funding, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced. WRP is a voluntary program offering landowners the opportunity to protect, restore and enhance wetlands on their properties. NRCS provides technical and financial support to help landowners with their wetland restoration efforts. By signing WRP easements, landowners receive cash payments in exchange for restoring or converting marginal agricultural land to shallow wetland areas. They also agree to maintain the new or restored wetlands. NRCS' goal is to achieve the greatest wetland functions and values, along with optimum wildlife habitat, on every acre enrolled in the program. To sign up for WRP or to get more information about other programs, contact the NRCS office located in the USDA Service Center in your county.
Hunters age 9 through 15 who want to learn about turkey hunting can register for a youth turkey-hunting clinic on Saturday, March 30th. The Missouri Department of Conservation and Everhart's Wilderness Lodge are cosponsoring the clinic. It will take place from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm at the lodge, which is northwest of Clinton. The event gives young people a chance to learn from experienced turkey hunters. Participants learn about turkey hunting rules and regulations, firearms safety, shotgun patterning, choke and shot selection, calling, scouting, decoy use, and equipment. The free clinic includes ammunition and lunch. Registration is limited to 40 youths. An adult sponsor must accompany each youth. Each adult may sponsor up to two youths. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) recommends that landowners considering a timber sale “Call Before You Cut” to get professional advice that can help them maximize benefits to their wallets, families and land. MDC coordinates the “Call Before You Cut” program for Missouri in partnership with the Missouri Chapter of the Society of American Foresters, the U.S. Forest Service Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry, and the Missouri Tree Farm Program. The program encourages woodland owners to consult with a professional forester, in conjunction with a professional timber harvester or a master logger, before they make decisions about their forestland. Five reasons to Call Before You Cut: 1.Maximize timber income and save on taxes; 2. Harvest to increase quality, health and value of land; 3. Protect land for future generations; 4. Find the best logger for the job; and 5. Learn if harvesting is right for the situation. Small trees may be harvestable, but may not have reached their full potential value. A nice white oak that is only 16 inches in diameter has value, but may only bring a lower lumber value. This same tree will increase in size and volume over time, and may sell at a higher veneer value at a later date. That is a double benefit for the landowner since they could receive a higher board-foot value, and the tree will have more board feet of volume. The Missouri State Highway Patrol released a couple of arrest reports for Dent County. On Wednesday, March 6th at 2:15 in the afternoon, 25-year old Marcus Kitson of Salem was arrested and charged with a felony for driving while revoked and speeding. He was held and released from the Dent County Jail. On Tuesday, March 12th at 3:45 in the afternoon, Billy Williams of Salem was arrested on a Miller County warrant for non-support. He was also charged with driving while suspended. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on bond.
An accident occurred at 1:00 early Monday morning in Crawford County on I-44 eastbound at the 201.6 mile-marker. According to the highway patrol report, 42-year old Shawn Williams of Park Hills, Missouri was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Classic when he blacked out. The vehicle then crossed the median, struck the cables, crossed the westbound lanes, and came to rest off the roadway. Williams suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene of the accident by Spurgeon’s Towing in St. James.

The City of Salem Spring Youth Soccer program will be starting soon for all children ages 4-12 years and Spring Youth Soccer sign-ups will be held today and Friday, March 15th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the front lobby of the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. The St. Louis Blues will host the Phoenix Coyotes tonight at the Scottrade Center. The Blues are 14-10-2 on the year and have three of their last four games. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio, starting with the pre-game show at 6:30.
The Missouri Tiger basketball team will play Texas A&M tonight at 9:00 in the second round of the SEC Tournament. Missouri is 22-9 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO.
The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will resume spring training action this afternoon against the Braves at 12:05.
The 2013 Cardinal pocket schedules have arrived! Those schedules can be picked up at businesses around town that sponsor Cardinal baseball games heard on KSMO Radio as well as in the front office of the KSMO studio.
Billy Butler and Salvador Perez each drove in a run as the Kansas City Royals edged the Seattle Mariners, 4-2, on Wednesday. David Lough and Xavier Nady also knocked in a run for the Royals, who saw pitcher Ervin Santana give up two hits, including a solo homer to Carlos Triunfel, while striking out seven over four innings. The Royals will play the Cleveland Indians this afternoon at 3:05.
The Kansas City Chiefs announced a slew of deals on Wednesday, agreeing to contracts with wide receiver Donnie Avery, quarterback Chase Daniel and tight end Anthony Fasano.

Funeral services for Bill E. Glenn of Salem, age 79, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the New Hope Cemetery.
Funeral services for Patricia Krieter of Merritt Island, Florida, age 45, will be held Monday at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Chapel. Interment will be in the Rocky Ford Cemetery near Salem.
