Michael Cuddyer went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored as Minnesota topped St. Louis, 5-2, in Grapefruit League play. Scott Spiezio was 2-for-3, and Adam Kennedy added a triple for the Cardinals. Ricardo Rincon was tagged with the loss after surrendering a pair of hits and two earned runs in one full inning of work.
St. Louis Cardinals right-handed relief pitcher Josh Kinney underwent Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, and will miss the entire 2007 season as he rehabs his right arm. Kinney felt discomfort in his elbow after he pitched last Monday against the Astros. An MRI exam revealed that the hurler had an almost complete tear in his ulnar collateral ligament. The surgery was performed in St. Louis by Dr. George Paletta, the Cardinals team physician. Kinney is expected to make a full recovery in time for the 2008 season. The 27-year-old Kinney was a surprise contributor for the World Series champion Cardinals last season, posting a 3.24 earned run average in 21 appearances, and did not allow a run in seven playoff appearances spanning 6 1/3 innings.
Garret Anderson went 3-for-3, clubbing a two-run home run, and the LA Angels of Anaheim slugged past the Kansas City Royals, 13-7. Mark Teahen went 2-for-2, scoring twice for the Royals. Ryan Shealy went 3- for-3, knocking in a run for Kansas City. Todd Wellemeyer started, and was tagged with the loss, as he was shelled for five runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings.
The St. Louis Blues will be off until tomorrow night when they will be in Vancouver to face the Canucks. Game time is set for 9:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
