The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced a March 15 deadline for landowners to apply for an easement program designed to protect prime, unique and important agricultural land from conversion to nonagricultural uses. Through its Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP), NRCS works cooperatively with state and local governments and nongovernmental organizations to purchase agricultural easements on privately owned farmland or ranchland. To qualify for FRPP, the land must be part of a farm or ranch. The site also must have more than 50 percent of its soils rated as prime farmland soils or be a site that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other eligibility requirements include: the current market value of the land must exceed the agricultural value of the land; the site must be large enough to sustain agricultural production; the site must be adjacent to other agricultural parcels; the site must have an NRCS-approved conservation plan; and there must be a pending offer for a conservation easement with a qualifying entity, such as a land trust. NRCS personnel in local USDA Service Centers can help prepare applications and forward them to Brinkman in the NRCS State Office in Columbia by the March 15 deadline. The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Monday, March 4th at 4:15 in the afternoon, an officer was called at the station in reference to damage to private property. The investigation revealed that a 31-year old Salem male had attempted to kick a door in on a residence in the 800 block of East Third and caused damage to the hinges of the door. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect, who was issued a summons to appear in court and released. At 5:10 that evening, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to an assault with a vehicle. That investigation revealed that a 24-year old Salem male had been reportedly assaulted by being struck by a vehicle driven by an 18-year old Salem male. On Tuesday, March 5th at 7:19 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of South Warfel in reference to a domestic disturbance. The investigation revealed that a 42-year old Salem male had brandished a knife and assaulted a 27-year old Salem female. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect, who was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Wednesday, March 6th at 2:06 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from Walmart. That investigation revealed that a 20-year old Rolla female took an item from the Walmart store shelf valued at $58.57 and went to the customer service desk where she fraudulently returned the item for a gift card equal in value. She is currently in custody in an adjoining county and will be extradited pending further investigation. That same afternoon at 2:52, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a forgery. That investigation revealed that the victim was coaxed into a scam that involved receiving a check that was to be deposited in the victims account. In turn the victim was to send a portion of the money back by way of money order. The original check appeared to be good but later did not clear so the victim had a loss of $700. It is believed this scam is originated over seas. Anyone with information regarding the assault and the forgery, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.
Under Missouri’s Graduated Driver License Law, seat belt use is required for young drivers. It is a primary offense. Unfortunately 34 percent of Missouri teens don’t buckle up. To lower that percentage, law enforcement will be out in full force March 15th through the 31st to crack down on unbelted drivers and save lives. One in four Missouri traffic crashes involves a young driver. Between 2010 and 2012, 243 teens (15-19) were killed in traffic crashes. Of those killed, 78 percent were unbuckled. Leanna Depue, chair of the executive committee of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety, says that many drivers take the attitude that ‘it will never happen to me,’ especially teens, but fatal crashes happen every day to all types of people. Law enforcement will ticket teens who aren’t buckled up. Missouri will also continue to educate teens on the importance of buckling up through statewide seat belt programs, such Battle of the Belt and Team Spirit. The City of Salem Spring Youth Soccer program will be starting soon for all children ages 4-12 years and Spring Youth Soccer sign-ups will be held on Thursday, March 14th and Friday, March 15th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the front lobby of the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. Chris Stewart tallied twice and Jake Allen stopped 39 shots as St. Louis downed San Jose, 4-2, at Scottrade Center. David Perron and Chris Porter added second-period tallies for the Blues, who have won three of their last four. Allen, who ran his record to 6-1-0, picked up his first home win this season. The Blues will host the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday.
Evan Gattis drove in three runs and starter Julio Teheran didn't allow a hit over five innings, as the Atlanta Braves downed the St. Louis Cardinals, 12-3, in Grapefruit League action. Justin Christian knocked in a pair with a triple, highlighting St. Louis' three-run seventh. Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook allowed two runs on three hits and three walks over four innings. The Cardinals have the day off today.

Brandon Moss and Andy Parrino drove in two runs apiece to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 6-3 win over the Kansas City Royals. Alex Gordon clubbed a solo homer, while Max Ramirez and Johnny Giavotella both added an RBI for the Royals (13-2), who will play the Mariners today.
The St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs both made some roster moves on Tuesday as free agency went into full effect. The Rams released safety Quintin Mikell and re-signed defensive tackle Jermelle Cudjo to a two-year contract. The Rams also agreed to terms on a five-year contract with tight end Jared Cook and they also agreed to terms with defensive end William Hayes on a multi-year contract. The Chiefs sent an undisclosed 2013 draft pick as well as a conditional choice in the 2014 draft for former 49ers quarterback Alex Smith.
