An accident occurred Tuesday morning at 11:30 in Texas County on Route E about four miles northwest of Houston that took the lives of a couple from Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Ford driven by 71-year old Harold Nolting of Licking was traveling westbound on Route E. Nolting failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. A passenger, 75-year old Alberta Notling of Licking, was pronounced dead at the scene by Texas County coroner Tom Whittaker as 12:10 and then transported to the Evans Funeral Home. Harold Nolting, her husband and the driver was transported to Texas County Memorial and pronounced dead by Dr. Barton at 1:00 pm. Both were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by A-1 Towing of Houston.

An accident happened in Jefferson County at 6:20 Wednesday evening on Highway 67 Northbound about a tenth of a mile north of the Avena School Road that took the life of a Viburnum man and left another person with serious injuries. According to the highway patrol report, a 1990 Range Landrover driven by 39-year old Kelly Spurlin of Bonne Terre, was traveling northbound on Highway 67 in the right lane when she traveled off the right side of the roadway where the right front of the Landrover struck a parked home-made trailer attached to a 1998 Dodge Ram. At that time, 57-year old James Bleything of Viburnum was changing a tire on the Dodge Ram and was struck by the Landrover before the Landrover struck the Dodge Ram which was unoccupied. The Landrover overturned and slid on its top, blocking the right lane of Highway 67. Bleything was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson County Medical Examiner Donna Thomas and his body was sent to the St. Louis County Morgue. Spurlin suffered serious injuries and was flown to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. The Landrover was totaled in the accident and the Dodge Ram sustained moderate damages.

On Tuesday, March 11th at 11:30 a.m. the Dent County Sheriff's Department received further information concerning the death of David Joe Cook of Boss, which had taken place at a residence located off of Dent County Road 4380.  A lengthy note left in a secure place containing information which was privy only to David Joe Cook was located. The note corresponded with information which had been located at the scene on March 8th. The suspicious death investigation has now been ruled a suicide.

The Timber Volunteer Fire Department held their annual Chili Supper, Cake Walk and Pie Auction on Saturday, March 8th at the Timber Lodge. Between donations, the cakewalk, chili supper, and other activities, a total of  $1,000 was collected.  Eric Mansfield the Auctioneer then orchestrated the pie auction, which brought in over $1,500. The Timber Fire Department was able to collect over $2,500 this year compared to about $1,600 last year. Over 150 people were in attendance for the benefit and the Current River Bluegrass Band provided awesome bluegrass music.  Honored during the festivities were former President, Jack Peters and Secretary/Treasurer Bob Graham, which both started with the Timber Fire Department when it was founded in 1995.

The City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball/Softball/T-Ball Season is fast approaching. Sign-ups will be held in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center (formerly the National Guard armory) on today and Friday, March 14th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. This league is for all boys and girls that are between 4 and 13-years of age. The last sign-ups will be held on Thursday, March 20th and Friday, March 21st from 4:00 to 6:00 and then on Saturday, March 22nd from 9:00 am to 12:00 (NOON). The cost is $15.00 per child. The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers placed four players on the All-SCA Teams that were voted on Tuesday night. Named to the All-SCA First Team was Taylor Sirois while C.J. Smith was named to the All-SCA Second Team. Cody Wofford and Zach Pitchford were both named to the All-SCA Honorable Mention Team. Sirois was also named the SCA Player of the Year and Coach Travis Wrightsman shared the Coach of the Year Award with Brent Collie of Willow Springs and Matt Pitts of Thayer. Congratulations Tigers!!!!

The Missouri Basketball Tigers will play Nebraska tonight in the first round action of the Big 12 Tournament. Missouri goes into the game with a season record of 16-15 and 6-10 in the Big 12. The game will begin at 6:00 and the pre-game show starts at 5:30. You can hear the game on KSMO. If Missouri wins, they would face Kansas Friday at 5:30.

Takia Starks scored 18 points and ripped down nine rebounds, and No. 11 Texas A&M crushed Missouri, 65-39, in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 women's basketball tournament. Alyssa Hollins scored 11 points for Missouri (10-21), which was coming off a 70-64 upset of fifth-seeded Oklahoma on Tuesday. Jessra Johnson scored nine points for the Tigers, who had lost 13 of 14 to close the regular season.

Cameron Maybin went 2-for-5 with two homers, four RBI and a pair of runs scored as Florida slammed St. Louis, 13-7, in Grapefruit League play. Troy Glaus, Albert Pujols, Ryan Ludwick and Brian Barton went deep for the Cardinals, who allowed 13 consecutive runs after taking a 6-0 lead. Ryan Franklin suffered the loss, torched for five hits and four runs over 1 1/3 relief frames. Starter Anthony Reyes allowed three runs in four innings with six strikeouts.

Miguel Olivo belted a two-run homer and notched a pair of doubles, as the Kansas City Royals downed the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 6-3, in Cactus League action. Ross Gload recorded his second homer of the spring, a two-run shot in the top of the third inning, for the Royals. Alex Gordon finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while starting pitcher Luke Hochevar yielded two runs on six hits in four innings.

St. Louis Blues have signed goaltender Ben Bishop.

Funeral services Kenneth Dean Tucker of Rolla, age 72, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Mt. Olive Cemetery in Doolittle.

Funeral services for Wilbert F. Zimmer of St. James, age 82, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the St. John Lutheran Church in St. James. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8:00 tonight at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery with full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to St. John Lutheran Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of St. James.

Funeral services for David G. Brandt Jr. of St. James, age 83, will be held Friday at 12:00 (noon) at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Arthritis Foundation.

Funeral services for Edith Belle Warden of Salem, age 94, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Freewill Baptist Church or the Phelps County Hospice.

Funeral services for Rev. T.B. Conway of St. James, age 96, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the First Assembly of God in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 in the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Assemblies of God World Mission Children Fund.

A Memorial Service for David Joe Cook of Boss, age 48, will be held on Monday, March 17th at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Janice Naomi Hood of Rolla, age 67, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00. Interment will be in the MT. Zion Cemetery in Salem. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Phelps Regional Hospice.
