The 61st Annual Variety Show and Miss Salem Contest was held Saturday night at the City Hall Auditorium and crowned Miss Salem for 2012 was Lindsey Purcell. The First Runner-Up Award went to Sierra Hagler, the Second Runner-Up Award was presented to Mackenzie Wulff, and the Miss Personality Award went to Dakota Quick. Congratulations to all the girls and acts that participated in the show and the Cosmopolitan Club would like to thank all those that attended and the sponsors for making the show possible.

An accident occurred at 9:40 Friday night in Crawford County on Highway F about four miles north of Interstate 44 that took the life of a Rolla man and seriously injuried two others. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by 17-year old Jeremy Ottermann of Cuba was passing two vehicles on a hill and struck a 2002 Ford Escort, driven by 64-year old Robert Sexton, head on. Sexton was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:13 by Crawford County Coroner Paul Hutson and his body was transported to the Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba. Ottermann suffered serious injuries and was flown to the Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. An occupant in the Ford, 50-year old Sherri Hill of Rolla, suffered serious injuries and was flown to the Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. An occupant in the Pontiac, 17-year old Joseph Alvey of Leasburg, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. The other occupant in the Pontiac, 17-year old Michael Marino of Cuba, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Alvey and Marino were the only ones not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. Both vehicles were totaled and removed from the scene by Miles and Son’s Towing.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00. After approval of the agenda in bids, the City requested bids for a used ½ ton 4-wheel drive, pickup for the Water Department. City Administrator Clayton Lucas will present the bids that were due February 22nd along with his recommendation. The City requested proposals to provide assistance with the annual insurance renewal specifications for property, liability, workers’ compensation, crime and terrorism coverage, including the City’s airport. Bids were due March 9th and Lucas will present the bids and make his recommendation. The City requested proposals for the demolition and proposals for the selling of the Old Middle School. All proposals were due March 9th and Lucas will present those proposals for the Board’s direction. Director of Public Works & Engineering Bill Huffman, City Administrator Clayton Lucas, Mayor Gary Brown, and Aldermen Jerry Randell, Kenneth Nash, Haydn Powell and Philip Giacomelli will discuss items concerning the City. During the Introduction and Reading of Bills and Resolutions, Resolution #5-2012, a resolution that supports activities promoting a physically active and healthy lifestyle for all community residents. In new and miscellaneous business, Clayton Lucas will address the Board concerning the lease agreement and if approved by the Board the approval of a resolution authorizing the Mayor to sign a lease between the City of Salem and The Council For A Healthy Dent County. The Board will need to approve a purchase order for over $3,000 the Street Department for 318.61 ton or rock from Capital Quarries used to repair streets that totals $3,137.67. The City and Waste Corp. are requesting setting the Spring Clean-Up dates for April 30th through May 4th and May 7th through May 11th. They will also discuss de-annexing a portion of the Spring Creek Golf Club, Inc. that was previously annexed into the city limits in 2007. City Administrator Clayton Lucas is requesting permission from the Board to bid out the employee’s health insurance. Also on the agenda in new and miscellaneous business, is the approval of Salem as a Missouri Sheriff’s Association Academy training site. The Board will then vote to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing litigation and personnel. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Missouri took care of its part, winning the Big 12 Tournament for the second time in four years, Kim English scored 19 points, Michael Dixon had 17, and 5th-ranked Missouri beat 12th-ranked Baylor, 90-75, on Saturday in the tournament final. Ricardo Ratliffe, Phil Pressey and Marcus Denmon all scored 15 points for the Tigers (30-4). With the win, Missouri locked up a 2nd seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament in the south division and they will face Norfolk State on Friday.

David Perron scored the game winner in the third period land Jaroslav Halak stellar goaltending last night lead the Blues to a 2-1 victory over Columbus and a sweep of the home and home series. The Blues beat Columbus in St. Louis Saturday night, 4-1. The Blues will face Chicago Tuesday night.

The Cards game yesterday was postponed by rain after going four innings with Washington leading 1-0. The Cards will have a split squad game with both Washington and Atlanta today, with both games being played at 12:05.

Kila Ka'aihue belted a two-run homer and the Athletics scored three runs in the eighth to defeat the Royals, 10-8, in Cactus League play. Eric Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI to pace Kansas City, and Bruce Chen threw three innings of one-run ball in a no-decision. The Royals will be playing the San Francisco Giants today at 3:05.

Funeral services for Jeanne Lynn Mertz of Cherryville, age 56, will be held today at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Martin-Trask Cemetery in Cherryville. Memorials may be made to the Center Ridge Pentecostal Church.

Funeral services for Velma P. Harlan of Rolla, age 86, will be held today at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Diagnostic Center.

Graveside Services for Clarence W. Farley of Rolla, age 75, will be held Tuesday at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem with Full Military Honors. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Memorial services for Barbara Marie Pickett of Steelville, age 72, will be held Wednesday at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lester McBenge of Steelville, age 79, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery in Steelville.

Graveside services for John W. Ditmeyer of St. James, age 43, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Miles Cemetery in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until 12:30 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the Miles Cemetery.

Funeral services for Maxine Evelyn Paulsmeyer of Rolla, age 87, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
