The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 4210, 5460, 6040 and 6090 and that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6040 and 6090. Purcell also reported that a crew would be repairing a pothole on Dent County Road 6080 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 4210. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that material would be hauled and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2070, 4270, and 4280 and material would also be hauled to Dent County Road 3050. Larson also reported that they have one grader down and that he sent an employee to work on brush cutting on the bike trail for the City of Salem in town on Thursday. Larson then reported that he and Charles Malone attended a truck and equipment show and gathered information for the county. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a Community Betterment Association meeting and reported that Trivia Night will be held on Saturday, March 27th at the City Hall and the Farmer’s Market opening day is set for Saturday, May 1st. Skiles attended the public housing authority meeting and then the MRPC meeting in St. James last night. He also reported that the year-to-date sales tax is up $5,000 from this time last year. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she took phone bids on propane for the courthouse: Ferrellgas bid $1.899; Titan bid $1.88; Chilton Oil bid $1.75 and MFA Oil bid $1.95 per gallon. The bid was awarded to Chilton Oil Co. at $1.75 per gallon. Sheriff Rick Stallings was in attendance at the meeting and discussion with the Commission his February monthly report. Stallings also discussed the Jail/Justice Center information. The Dent County Commission then signed a lease agreement with The Bank of Salem for financing for the front-end loader bought from Fabick and Co. The lease agreement with the Bank of Salem is for 4 years at 3.95%. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday at the 9:00 am at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

Senator Frank Barnitz announced that the Department of Conservation has chosen two area school districts to receive Fuels-for-Schools project grants.  Steelville R-3 will receive $900,000 and Rolla 31 will receive $760,000 to convert their current heating system to more be more energy efficient. The Fuels-for-Schools program funding is provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  The program helps public schools retrofit their current fuel or gas heating system to a biomass heating system, which can significantly reduce heating costs. An eight-person committee reviewed Steelville R-3 and Rolla 31 school districts’ grant proposals. Feasibility contractors provided by the USDA Forest Service also evaluated projects before the final selections were made. 

Time changes this weekend, as it is that time of year to set your clocks up an hour. Be sure to set your clock ahead an hour Saturday night before you go to bed or when you get up Sunday morning. Spring forward with time changing this weekend.

The long awaited 2010 St. Louis Cardinals pocket schedules have arrived. They are available at local merchants around town or in the front lobby of the KSMO Radio Station as well as at number of sponsor locations around town.

The Salem Tiger boy’s basketball team placed two players on the All-SCA teams. Senior Phil Moser and junior Jonathan Hambacker both named to the All-SCA Honorable Mention team. The Salem Lady Tiger basketball team also had two players placed on All-SCA teams. Junior Jennifer Herndon was named to the All-SCA Second Team. Senior Danielle Connell was named to the All-SCA Honorable Mention team.

T.J. Oshie and Brad Boyes both scored in the shootout as the St. Blues topped the New York Islanders 2-1. Chris Mason didn’t give up a goal in the shootout, and Patrik Berglund scored the Blues only regulation goal. The Blues will be in action this weekend, as they will face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday at 6:00 and the Minnesota Wild on Sunday at 5:00. You can hear both of those games on KSMO Radio.

Shane Robinson hit a two-run double, as the St. Louis Cardinals scored five in the top of the ninth inning and held on to edge the Florida Marlins, 5-3, in Grapefruit League action. David Freese and Joe Mather each had an RBI, while Dennys Reyes picked up the win despite giving up a solo home run in 1 1/3 innings of work. You can hear the Cards games at noon on Saturday and Sunday on KSMO Radio.

Casey Blake finished 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and two runs scored to lead the LA Dodgers to a 6-4 win over Kansas City in Cactus League action. Scott Podsednik went 2-for-3 with a two-run blast for the Royals, while Mitch Maier drove in a run. Gil Meche started and absorbed the loss after being tagged for seven hits and four runs over two-plus frames. The Royals face the Seattle Mariners today.

Funeral services for Virgil Franklin Dees of Rolla, age 89, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held on today from 5:00-7:00 in the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Internment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

A Memorial Dinner for Patsy Jane Hendricks of Steelville, age 52, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the First Assembly of God Church Fellowship Hall in Steelville. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for L.G. (Gene) Ball of Salem, age 78, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be on the Ball Farm. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude’s Children Hospital.

Funeral services for Lorraine E. Gaines of Salem, age 89, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Larry Hanger of Salem, age 63, will be held Saturday at 4:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday from 2:00 until time of service. Memorials are suggested to the Larry Hanger Family.

Funeral services for Lloyd Jasper Blackwell of Salem, age 90, will be held Monday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00. Interment will be in the Blackwell Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Osage Beach Health Care Center.

Funeral services for Dean L. Tucker of Farmington, formerly of Salem, age 80, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
