Dent County University of Missouri Extension will hold a Spring Beef and Forage Meeting on March 26th at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room at 7 pm. This program will feature Will McClain, MU Extension Agronomy Specialist, who will discuss nitrogen sources for hay and pasture fertilization.  Ammonium nitrate, which has been commonly used for forage nitrogen fertility, is no longer available in our area.  Alternative nitrogen sources such as urea, super U, and ammonium sulfate, along with urease inhibitors that can be used to reduce nitrogen losses to volatilization will be discussed, and recommendations regarding the use of these various products will be provided. Ted Cunningham, MU Extension Livestock Specialist, will discuss best management practices for developing quality beef replacement heifers.  With many producers now expanding their herds by retaining and developing heifers, producers should use management techniques that result in improved reproductive efficiency and longevity in their breeding herd. Additionally, information regarding the Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer program will be provided for producers who wish to develop and market and/or purchase beef replacement heifers. There will be a $5 per person charge for this program (payable at the door), and space is limited.  To attend, please RSVP by contacting the Dent County MU Extension Office at 729-3196.  For more information please contact Ted Cunningham, MU Extension Livestock Specialist, at the Dent County Extension office or by email at cunninghamtc@missouri.edu.
