According to the Dent County Sheriff’s Department, drug charges have been filed against a father and son after a parent confiscated marijuana that was allegedly sold to their son by the two. Arrested were 40-year old Paul A. Messey, Sr. of Salem who was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, deliver or sell; and 17-year old Paul Messey, Jr. of Salem who was charged with distributing or delivering marijuana. The Messey’s were arrested on Saturday, March 7th. The sheriff's department attempted a knock and talk at the Messey residence, but the occupants of the residence refused the deputies permission to search the residence. Later, the department served a warrant on the Messeys in the Adams Subdivision east of Salem. During the search officers found approximately one pound of marijuana individually packaged and ready to sell, with $100 under the marijuana. They also found a set of scales containing marijuana residue, marijuana paraphernalia, a partially used container of sandwich baggies and a vehicle containing a misdemeanor amount of marijuana. According to Sheriff Rick Stallings, Amber Nicole Crocker was also arrested, but was later released.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports involving grass, brush and structure fires. On Thursday, March 5th at 1:31 in the afternoon, the Dent County Fire Protection District firemen responded to a grass fire on Dent County Road 3170. Upon arrival, firefighters found a multiple-acre grass fire and assisted the Lennox Fire Department in extinguishing the blaze. A total of six firefighters responded to the call and had the scene under control at 2:48 pm. On Friday, March 6th at 4:46 in the afternoon a total of seven firefighters responded to a call in the 800 block of South Askins for a structure fire. Upon arrival, there was smoke and fire coming from the structure. The scene was under control at 5:08 as the fire was contained to the kitchen area. Also at 4:46 that same afternoon, the Dent County Fire Protection District firemen responded to a brush fire on Dent County Road 5170. A total of seven firefighters responded to the fire and found the scene under control. On Saturday, March 7th at 2:06 in the afternoon the Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a grass fire on County Road 5030. Upon arrival, there was about an acre of grass on fire. The scene was brought under control at 2:22 by seven firefighters. On Monday, March 9th at 8:21 in the morning, the Dent County Fire Protection District firemen responded to a call for a structure with smoke. A total of four firefighters responded, located the source of the smoke, and returned to the station at 9:09 that morning. On Tuesday, March 10th at 2:01 in the afternoon, the Dent County Fire Protection District firemen responded to a grass fire at Third and Grand Streets in Salem. Upon arrival there was about a quarter of an acre on fire. A total of six firefighters had the scene under control at 2:13 the same afternoon.

United States Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway announced that 30-year old Julio Jimenez-Quinones, an illegal alien from Mexico, pleaded guilty to re-entry of a previously deported aggravated felon.  He had previously been arrested in Phelps County on State drug charges, and pleaded guilty to the federal charges. Immigration agents arrested Jimenez-Quinones on December 17, 2008 in Rolla.  He appeared before United States District Judge Donald J. Stohr in St. Louis. Jimenez-Quinones faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison when he is sentenced on May 29, 2009.

The Cosmopolitan Club will present their 58th Annual Variety Show/Miss Salem Pageant on Saturday, March 14th at the Salem City Hall starting at 7:30 pm. Admission is $5 for adults and children under 12 the cost is $3. The proceeds go back into the community for scholarships and other needs around the area. There are 21 girls competing for Miss Salem this year and they include Shala Plank, Michelle Pankey, Houlie Ibrahim, Lacey Rice, Carrie Howell, Jaclyn Rutland, Sierra Daniels, Micah Morton, Cortney Wainwright, Ashly Adams, Jessica Brand, Gabrielle Skiles, Lauren Blackwell, Rebecca Potts, Fara Julien, Laken Farel, Elizabeth Warden, Alivia Elliot, Andrea Patterson, Amy Padgett and Carly Carroll.

The Mark Twain National Forest has centralized fire dispatching duties out of the Supervisor’s office in Rolla. There is now a toll free number to report wildfires occurring anywhere on the Forest. This number should be used any time to report a wild fire on or threatening National Forest lands. The toll free number is (866) 800-8595. If this number does not work, please call (573) 201-4283.

David Perron scored twice to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 5-2 win over the Dallas Stars at Scottrade Center. David Backes, Brad Winchester and Keith Tkachuk also scored for the Blues, who have won five of their last seven games overall. It was Tkachuk's 20th goal of the year, the 15th time he's accomplished the feat in his career. Chris Mason made 20 saves in the win. St. Louis improved to 17-12-5 at home this season. The Blues lead the season series, 3-0, and the Blues have downed the Stars in six of the last seven meetings in St. Louis. The Blues will host San Jose on Thursday night at 7:30.

Chris Duncan hit a two-run homer and drove in three as St. Louis topped Detroit, 5-2, in Grapefruit League play. Ryan Ludwick and Jarrett Hoffpauir also added RBI for the Cardinals. Kyle Lohse got the win with 4 1/3 innings of two-hit, one-run ball.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday in Cactus League action.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers are seeded third in the Big 12 Tournament that starts tonight and they have drawn a bye in the first round. They will play the winner of the Texas Tech and Texas A & M game tomorrow night at about 8:30. You can hear the game tomorrow night starting at about 8:15 on KSMO Radio.

Funeral Mass for Ross Lee Green of Salem, age 61, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rosary recited at 10:30. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary.

Funeral services for Mayonne Gregory of Salem, age 59, will be Friday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Sligo Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Dent County Relay for Life or the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Phyllis L. Roam of Salem, age 77, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Ruth Reynolds of Salem, age 88, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 (noon) until service time. Interment will be it the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Shirley Miller of St. James, age 76, will be held Saturday at 9:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church.
