A number of students participated Tuesday evening in the FFA/Ag Area #13 contests. At the contest, the Parliamentary Procedure Team comprised of Jennifer Lundy, Samantha Riley, Chandra Sullins, Mackenzie Wulff, Zeb Frazier and Wes Tatom placed 1st and they will compete at District Contest on March 29th.  Individual awards went to Kayla Gott for capturing second place with her Completed Ownership Record Book, and Samantha Riley won second place with the chapter’s Chapter Scrapbook. Jennifer Lundy's Secretary's Book and Eddie Fleetwood's Treasurer’s Book both placed third.  Kelly Cunningham took Fourth place in Division One Public Speaking, as did Cordell Tatom in Creed Speaking.  Both Kelly and Cordell are alternates to the District Contests.  Also taking Fourth place was Cordell Tatom's Beginning Placement Records and Cody Bell's Beginning Ownership Records.  Congratulations to these FFA/Ag students on their performance at the contest.

An accident occurred Wednesday, March 9th at 12:05 in the morning in Reynolds County on Highway 72 about seven miles south of Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 GMC Envoy driven by 26-year old Elizabeth McNail of Bunker was traveling westbound on Highway 72. The GMC traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. McNail suffered moderate injuries and was transported by Reynolds County EMS to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The GMC was totaled and removed from the scene by Wisdom’s Towing of Ellington.  

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their reports for arrests made in Dent County this past week. On Thursday, March 3rd at 11:53 p.m., 60-year-old Gary Christeson of Centerville was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while having a revoked, license and failure to use a signal. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and was later released. On Saturday, March 5th at 9:15 p.m., 43-year-old Minnie Clark of Salem was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and driving while suspended. She was taken to the Dent County Jail and was later released. Later that night at 11:00 p.m., 42-year-old William Sullivan of Salem was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and was later released.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of February. During the month, they wrote four equipment repair orders; six summons to appear in court, 13 warning tickets, and 10 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 10 accidents, two reports of assault, two reports of burglaries, one report of disorderly conduct, two reports of domestic assault, four reports of domestic violence, two reports of driving while intoxicated, one report of forgery, one report of identity theft, and three reports of leaving the scene of an accident. The department also investigated one report of a lost or stolen license plate, one report of a robbery, five reports of stealing, and three reports for a 96-hour commitment. The Police Department conducted one death investigation and one report of a suicide. The Salem Police Department received 1,418 calls for service during the month, handled 89 walk-ins to the station, and they redirected 48 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 10 hours in court testifying and spent 10 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in February included 45 calls for escorts, three calls for an intoxicated driver, two intoxicated pedestrian calls, four calls for domestic disputes, four calls for a wrecker, there were two 911 calls, one call for a peace disturbance, ten calls for alarms sounding, two calls for fights in progress, eight ambulance assist calls, and five fire calls.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 7,815 miles and arrested 8 males and 2 females during the month of February.

The next CBCO Blood drive will be held Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Salem on West Third Street from 1:00 until 6:00.

Chris Stewart scored his second goal of the game 54 seconds into overtime, as St. Louis overcame a three-goal deficit to stun Columbus, 4-3, at Nationwide Arena. Stewart tied the contest in the third period, minutes after Ian Cole scored his first NHL goal for the Blues, who swept the home-and-home series over the last three days. Jaroslav Halak made 19 saves, including just five in the third period, to earn the win. The Blues will host the Montreal Canadiens tonight at 7:00. Marcus Denmon scored 20 points to lead the sixth-seeded Missouri Tigers past the 11th-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders, 88-84, in a Big 12 Championship opening round matchup from the Sprint Center. Michael Dixon had 17 points for Missouri (23-9), which advanced to play Texas A&M in a quarterfinal contest tonight. Kim English and Justin Safford added 15 and 10 points, respectively. The game tonight starts at 8:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

Missouri junior guard Marcus Denmon was named a first team All-Big 12 selection. Also rewarded were Ricardo Ratliffe who was named as the Big 12's Newcomer of the Year and was named to the All-Rookie Team. Both Ratliffe and junior Laurence Bowers were honorable mention All-Big 12 selections. Bowers was also named to the league's All-Defensive Team.

David Freese belted a two-run homer and Jon Jay had three RBI to lead the St. Louis Cardinals over the Atlanta Braves, 6-1, in a Grapefruit League game. Cardinal’s starter Kyle Lohse earned the win in four innings of work, giving up a run on four hits with three strikeouts. Luis Salazar, a manager for the Braves' Class A Advanced team, was injured during the game when he was struck in the face by a Brian McCann foul ball while sitting in the dugout. Salazar lost consciousness and was airlifted to a hospital in Orlando.

Melky Cabrera hit a three-run triple in the Royals' five-run first inning, and Kansas City cruised to a 13-4 rout of the Chicago Cubs in a Cactus League contest. Cabrera added a double, while Alex Gordon went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Mitch Maier had a solo shot for the Royals, who got four innings from starter Bruce Chen. He gave up two runs on three hits and three walks, and struck out four.

Graveside services for Mary Skaggs Shrout of House Springs, formerly of Steelville, age 56, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Shoal Creek Cemetery in Steelville. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Autumn Richardson of Bunker, age 29, will be held today at 2:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Judes.

Funeral services for Wanda Brown of Salem, age 81, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Wofford Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Wofford Cemetery.

Graveside services for Virginia Franke of Bowling Green, Kentucky, age 82, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Velma M. Brandti of St. James,age 83, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Association.

Funeral services for Earnest Schroeder of St. James, age 51, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00. Memorials may be made to the the Schroeder Family.
