The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Wednesday, March 3rd at 3:00 p.m. an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifting and an assault. The report revealed a female subject had stolen $29.96 of merchandise and left the store. Wal-Mart employees had attempted to detain the subject. In so doing the subject assaulted one of the employees and fled the scene. The subject, a 51-year-old Salem woman, was later located and arrested on the shoplifting and assault. She was issued two citations to appear in court and released and the merchandise was not recovered. On Thursday, March 4th at 9:45 in the morning, an officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a speeding violation. In doing so, the vehicle was finally stopped and the driver, a 43-year-old St. Robert woman, was issued a summons to appear in court for driving with a revoked license, speeding and stop sign violation. At 2:30 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the Salem Memorial District Hospital in reference to a mental commitment order. A 79-year-old Salem woman was transported to Sullivan hospital and released to their custody. On Friday, March 5th at 8:35 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the Salem Jr. High School in reference to a stolen 2006 Ford F-150. The investigation revealed that between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. that evening, a person or persons unknown had stolen the truck from the school parking lot. On March 6th at 8:00 in the morning, the truck was located in Phelps County and the truck had been burned. On Sunday, March 7th at 12:30in the morning, an officer was sent to the 300 block of North Taylor in reference to an intoxicated subject on a bicycle. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 41-year-old Salem man for an assault and disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was incarcerated. Anyone with information on the stolen truck, which is still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Cosmopolitan Club presents their 59th Annual Variety Show/Miss Salem Pageant on Saturday, March 13th at the Salem City Hall Auditorium beginning at 7:00 pm. Admission is $5 for adults and children under 12 the cost is $3, and the proceeds to back into the community for scholarships and other needs around the area. There are 14 girls competing for Miss Salem this year and they are: Sierra Daniels, Fara Julien, Erin Chase, Jennifer Herndon, Lacey Rice, Houlie Ibrahim, Rachel Arts, Kayla Gott, Kala Trolinger, Lanie Glenn, Magan Shults, Tarynn Huitt, Gracie Richmond and Ashley Greenshields.

The 8th annual Sligofest will be held Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm in Sligo.  Special guest will be Gavin Walsh from Sligo, Ireland. An all you can eat corned beef and cabbage dinner and rueben sandwiches will be served from noon until 4 pm for $8. Proceeds to benefit the old Sligo School and Church.

The long awaited 2010 St. Louis Cardinals pocket schedules have arrived. They are available at local merchants around town or in the front lobby of the KSMO Radio Station as well as at number of sponsor locations around town.

Danny Valencia drilled the game-winning home run in the eighth inning to give the Minnesota Twins a 7-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, in Grapefruit League action. Colby Rasmus blasted a two-run homer and Skip Schumaker went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright allowed four runs and five hits in two innings to start the game. The Cardinals play Washington today.

David DeJesus tripled, scored twice and drove in a pair while Rick Ankiel hit a three-run home run and drove in four overall, as Kansas City outslugged Oakland, 11-10, in Cactus League action. Roman Colon picked up the win with a scoreless frame for the Royals, while Robinson Tejeda was hit hard to the tune of five runs on four hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts over two frames. Mitch Maier hit a two-run home run as the Royals rallied for the win late with a pair of runs in both the eighth and ninth frames. The Royals will tangle with Colorado this afternoon.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed running back Thomas Jones.

Beginning Saturday, March 13th the Salem Bowling Center will be host for the 2010 Missouri State Youth Championship tournament. Every weekend between March 13th and May 2nd, except for Easter weekend, a tournament will be held here in Salem. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will be making packets for the families of those participating youth, with information on our area and what we have to offer here. If your business would like to include a business card, flyer or brochure we would be happy to include it in those packets.  These families will be coming from all over the state. We will be putting together approximately 2,300 packets. There will be several youth taking part each weekend with different participants each weekend therefore we will need several packets to accommodate all the families.  In order to include your inserts and flyers we will need those to be dropped off here at the Chamber office no later than March 10th. Funeral services for Virginia Pyatt of Steelville, age 99, will be held today at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Grubville.

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Duncan of Salem, age 72, will be held today at 11:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Bessie Caroline McWhorter of Rolla, age 83, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the family of Bessie McWhorter.

Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth Bracy of Lenox, age 76, will be held Thursday at Noon at the First Pentecostal Church of Vichy. Interment will be in the Wynn/Maxwell Cemetery. Memorials maybe made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Phelps County Regional Homecare Hospice. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem.
