In front of a jammed pack crowd Saturday night at the Salem City Hall Auditorium for the 57th Annual Variety Show and Miss Salem Pageant, Allison Hall was crowned the 2008 Miss Salem by the 2007 Miss Salem Mina Ibrahim. Salem Family Health Care was the proud sponsor of Allison. The first runner-up went to Katie Hunt sponsored by the Salem News, and the second runner-up was presented to Megan Johnson sponsored by Town and Country Bank. Alivia Elliot, sponsored by Town and Country Insurance, was named Miss Personality in the competition. The Cosmopolitan Club thanks all those who attended the show and also thanks all the girls and the acts that made the show possible.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their report for the month of February. For the month there were 87 9-1-1- calls, in which all were responded to with 19 of the calls being prank calls. The Department served 128 papers consisting of 70 civil papers, and 58 criminal papers, plus they served 22 felony warrants and 26 misdemeanor warrants. During the month,there were five drug arrests and 12 domestic disturbance calls were addressed. The Sheriff’s Department issued 32 tickets, conducted 53 traffic stops, made five DWI arrests, and assisted on 16 traffic accidents. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department also conducted two death investigations. For the month of February, the Sheriff’s Department investigated one burglary, four assaults, six thefts, two reports of crimes against children, five property line disputes, and four property damage reports. The Department spent 101 hours working in court, 15 hours testifying and 96 hours in training. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department handled a total of 229 calls during the month and made eight community policing appearances. In the Dent County Jail Report for February, there were 16 prisoners incarcerated for the month with an average daily total of 12. There were four transfers to the Department of Corrections and 28 transfers to or from other departments. During the month of February, the sheriff’s department drove a total of 16,152 miles on criminal investigations, patrolling and prisoner transportation.

William Lynch Elementary School will be having Kindergarten registration on Tuesday, March 11 from 8:30 to 6:00 and on Wednesday, March 12th fro 8:30 to 2:30 for the 2008-2009 school year. Registration will be held at the 1st Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Your child must turn 5 years old by July 31st this year and be present at registration time. You are asked to please bring the child’s birth certificate, social security card and shot record, which are required for enrollment. For an appointment please call 729-6611.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will hold their March membership meeting on Wednesday, March 12th at the Salem TCRC located at 1200 West Rolla Road at noon. Sergeant Dan Crain of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Troop I, will be presenting the program, which uses a powerful video with testimonies and crash photos entitled,  “How To Save A Life”. Lunch will be catered by Country Mart and you are asked to RSVP no later than today by 3:00 to be included in the lunch count.

All varsity and JV basketball players and cheerleaders and their parents are invited to the 2007-2008 Basketball Sports Banquet. It was postponed last week due to weather and will be held tonight at the Salem High School cafeteria beginning at 6:30 pm. Boys Basketball Coach Travis Wrightsman, Cheerleading Sponsor Gayle Wrightsman, and Girls Basketball Coach Phillip Karr will hand out their awards.

Matt Diaz went 3-for-3 with a double, a run batted in, and scored three runs as the Atlanta Braves crushed the St. Louis Cardinals, 12-5, in Grapefruit League action. Rick Ankiel went 2-for-3 and scored for the Cardinals. Clayton Mortensen was tagged for three hits and three runs in two innings to take the loss for St. Louis. Cardinal pitching surrendered 32 runs in two games over the weekend. St. Louis Cardinals after the game reassigned pitcher Ron Flores and outfielder Amaury Marti to minor league camp, and optioned infielder Brian Barden to Memphis (PCL).

Daryle Ward went 4-for-4 with three runs batted in and a run scored as Chicago crushed Kansas City, 13-1, in Cactus League play. Alex Gordon knocked in the lone run for the Royals, who were limited to two hits in the game. Starter Brett Tomko was torched in the loss for nine hits and six runs -- five earned -- over 2 1/3 frames.

Austin Johnson scored 18 points to lead the Oklahoma Sooners to a 75-66 win over the Missouri Tigers in Big 12 Conference action Saturday at the Lloyd Noble Center. DeMarre Carroll and Leo Lyons led the way for the Tigers (16-15, 6-10), scoring 18 points apiece in the loss. Three-point shooting proved to be the difference in the game, as the Sooners outscored Missouri 24-12 from long distance. Missouri will participate in the Big 12 Tournament this week with the schedule yet to be announced.

Brad Isbister and Henrik Sedin scored late in the third period to lift Vancouver over St. Louis, 4-2, Saturday night at GM Place. Brad Boyes tallied twice for the Blues, who have dropped four of their last five. Manny Legace took the loss in his 15th consecutive start, allowing three goals on 28 shots. The Blues will continue their long road trip tonight in Calgary starting at 8:30.

Funeral services for Willard L. Blackwell of Salem, age 95, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the Blackwell Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Blackwell Cemetery.

Funeral services for Kenneth W. Hicks of St. James, age 54, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will also be today from 12:00 to time of service. Interment will be in the High Gate Cemetery.

Funeral services for Myrtle Adelee Willhite of St. Louis, formerly of Steelville, age 83, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the Britton Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 6;00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Sellers Cemetery in Dillard.

Funeral services for Dorothy "Dottie" McCoy of Cherryville, age 79, will be held Wednesday at 12:00 (noon) at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Martin Cemetery in Cherryville. Memorials may be given to the Trinity Hospice of St. Louis.

Funeral services for Deloris A. Jordan of Katy, Texas, formerly of St. James, age 57, will be held Wednesday at 7:00 at the Forest City Christian Church in St. James. Visitation will be from 4:00 until service time. Interment will be it in the St. James Cemetery. A Special Family service will be held Thursday at the Carr School House. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Kenneth Dean Tucker of Rolla, age 72, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Wednesday evening. Interment will be in the Mt. Olive Cemetery in Dollittle.

Funeral services for Wilbert F. Zimmer of St. James, age 82, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the St. John Luthern Church in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:30 to 8:00 at the St. John Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memoarials are suggested to the St. John Lutheran Church. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James.
