The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, Red Cummings asked Dent County Clerk Angie Curley about the state statute on incapacitation and brought in a court order that showed that the person was deemed incapacitated by the court that allows that person to still vote. Curley said that court order had a flag showing an additional paragraph added by the court. She said that the judge can add that paragraph to the order for that exception to be made that still allows a person deemed incapacitated to vote. If that paragraph is not included, the person is not allowed to vote. Commissioner Dennis Purcell also told Cummings that the roads used in the Road Rally needed only about three hours of work by the road crews. He said that the roads were not graded prior to the race and they needed to be graded, so there really was no additional cost to the county allowing the roads to be used for the race. In the road report, First District Commissioner Purcell said that grading would be done and rock would be added to Dent County Roads 4080 and 4215. He also said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5690, 6020 and 6590. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done and rock would be added to Dent County Roads 2150, 2370, 3160, 4040, 4060 and 4430. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he would be attending a public housing authority meeting and the MRPC meeting Thursday night in St. James. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that the last day to register to vote for the Municipal Election in April is Wednesday, and that absentee balloting is going on now. She said that the courthouse would be open on Saturday, April 3^rd from 8:00 until noon for absentee voting. At the last meeting, bids were taken from local banks on a lease purchase of a front-end loader and the two lowest bids were for 3.95% from Town and Country Bank and the Bank of Salem. Since the last lease/purchase of equipment was made through Town and Country Bank, the commissioners voted 3-0 to go with the bank of Salem this time. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Area Community Betterment Association will be hosting a “Trivia Night” fundraiser on Saturday, March 27^th at 6:00 PM.  The event will be held at the Salem City Hall Auditorium on Washington Street. There will be ten categories with ten questions in each category. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 teams, with $200 and a trophy going to the first place team. A prize will be given for the most creative team name as well as other games and raffles during the evening. The emcee for the evening will be SACBA Board member, David Massengale. Come and compete against the reigning champions “The Forrest Stumped”. Compete as a team; bring your family, friends & neighbors. Teams of up to 8 people may participate for an entry fee of $100. Snacks and drinks will be provided during the evening. Each team in encouraged to bring their own food for their table. Spectators are welcome to watch from the balcony. State emergency management and the National Weather Service (NWS) will conduct a STATEWIDE SEVERE WEATHER TORNADO DRILL on Thursday, March 11^th at 1:30 pm. The test was originally scheduled for today but was moved due to the possibility of bad weather. Every school, citizen and business is encouraged to participate in the drill by practicing, seeking secure, safe shelter from a tornado. The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has granted a waiver to the state of Missouri as the National Weather Service will be allowed to use the actual Emergency Alert System (EAS) code (TOR) for the tornado drill message. This means that NOAA Weather Radios that are set to receive the TOR code will activate for the test tornado warning. Local officials may sound warning sirens to initiate the drill. Area residents, businesses, and schools are urged to treat the drill as if it were an actual tornado emergency. The Missouri Ozarks and extreme southeast Kansas experience a variety of sever weather including tornadoes, sever thunderstorms with damaging winds and large hail as well as flash flooding. Residents are encouraged as well to use this week and test day to practice what you would do in a real tornado emergency.
