The Dent-Phelps R-III School has CANCELLED CLASSES for TODAY and FRIDAY of this week…due to the FLU!!

The Salem Community Garden will kick-off the 2012 garden season with registration events this month. Interested gardeners can sign up for a plot Monday, March 12th at 7:00 p.m. at the Salem TCRC, or by stopping by the Dent County Extension office at 112 E. 5th St. after March 12th.  All participants must complete a registration form to be eligible for a garden plot. There is no cost for garden plots. Garden plots are 4 feet by 15 feet.  Garden tools are available for the shared use of community gardeners, and often seeds, compost and other garden materials are available for free or reduced cost to participants. Fifty garden plots are available and registration is a first-come, first-served basis.  Workshops and “how-to” sessions on a variety of gardening practices to increase productivity and beauty of any home or market garden will be presented throughout the season. The Salem Community Garden began in 2009 and is a cooperative effort of the University of Missouri Extension, Salem United Methodist Church, local organizations, and citizens.  Donations of tools, seeds or other gardening resources are appreciated, and are tax-exempt. Any resident interested in signing up for an individual garden bed at no cost or volunteering their time to help at the garden should attend the March 12th sign-up or contact Thom Haines at 573-247-7952 or Sarah Hultine Massengale at Dent County Extension, 729-3196.

The Cosmopolitan Club's 61st annual Variety Show and Miss Salem Contest will be held at 7:00 p.m. Saturday at the Salem City Hall Auditorium. There are ten contestants this year vying for the title Miss Salem and they are Chandra Sullins, Dakota Quick, Ashlee LaRue, Taylor Bell, Mackenzie Wulff, Paige Arnett, Joy Malott, Rachel Shults, Sierra Hagler, and Lindsey Purcell. This year’s emcee is David Massengale. Kayla Gott, last year’s Miss Salem, will crown the new Miss Salem.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their arrest reports. On Saturday, March 3rd at 9:07 at night, 38-year old Toby Forster of Salem was arrested and charged with felony driving while intoxicated (drugs), felony driving while revoked, failure to drive on the right half of the roadway, no insurance, and no seat belt. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and later released. Later that night at 9:10, 33-year old Joey Reinbott of Salem was arrested and charged with felony driving while intoxicated, driving while revoked, and no seat belt. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and later released. On Sunday, March 4th at 1:32 in the early morning, 43-year old Anthony Wofford of Salem was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while suspended, resisting arrest by fleeing, and failure to stop at a stop sign.

The first Dent County Coordinated Community Response/S.A.F.E. Team meeting of the year will be held March 21st at SBU from noon until 1:00 and lunch will be provided. The special speaker will be Matt Milligan with Show-Me Hope. He will be discussing his experience in working with survivors of violence, and also the different services the Dent County Ministerial Fellowship can offer the people we serve. The meeting is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about these services in Dent County. Be sure to SPRING FORWARD as Daylight Savings Time is this weekend. You can either set your clock ahead one hour Saturday night before going to bed, or Sunday morning when you get up. Yes, you lose an hour of sleep but gain more daylight hours.

The Southwest Baptist University-Salem Campusis sponsoring the Tuesday, March 13th Chamber Members luncheon meeting.  This meeting will be held at Southwest Baptist University located at 501 South Grand, beginning at noon. Philip Giacomelli will be speaking on new and upcoming programs as well as the formation of their new community service student organization and various other SBU related topics. There will be a drawing for the top 3 “premier” booth spaces for the Business Expo – members must be present to win!  There is no cost for lunch but please RSVP by Friday, March 9th to chamber@salemmo.com or call 729-6900.

The Salem Winter Sports banquet was held Tuesday night at the Salem Cafeteria. Awards were handed out to the cheerleaders, Girls Basketball Team and Boys Basketball Team. Named to the All-District Team for the boys were Jacob Kettner and Chad Elliott for the boys. Team awards included Jacob Kettner as the MVP and the Defensive Player of the Year, the Most Improved Player went to Cody Whitaker and the Hustle Award was presented to Jake Arzt and Tyler Wofford. Three Salem players were named to the All-SCA Teams. Making the Honorable Mention All-SCA Team was Cody Whitaker, named to the All-SCA Second Team was Chad Elliott and Jacob Kettner was honored by the making the All-SCA First Team. Kettner was also a unanimous selection as the SCA Player of the Year for 2012. Salem finished the year with a 4-3 record. Congratulations Tigers!!!!

Carlos Maldonado's two-run home run in the ninth inning allowed the Washington Nationals to earn a 3-3 tie with the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. Daniel Descalso scored on an error and Tyler Greene knocked in a run in the top of the seventh to give the Cardinals a 3-1 lead, but Tyler Moore led off the bottom of the ninth with a single before Maldonado followed with a shot over the right-field wall.  Shelby Miller allowed one run on two hits in a two-inning start for the Cardinals.  Descalso went 2-for-4 with a homer for the defending champions.

Bryan LaHair went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Kansas City Royals, 6-4, on Wednesday. Jonathan Sanchez allowed four runs -- three earned -- on four hits in one inning of work for Kansas City. Max Ramirez had a two-run single for the Royals.

The Missouri Tiger basketball team will be playing Oklahoma State tonight in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Tournament. Missouri is 27-4 on the year and you’ll be able to hear the game, starting with the pre-game show, on KSMO Radio at 5:30.

The St. Louis Blues will be hosting the Anaheim Ducks tonight at 7:00. The Blues are 42-18-7 on the year and are tied with the New York Rangers atop all of the NHL with 91 points. KSMO will join the Blues game in progress following the Missouri game.

Funeral Mass for Susan Jane Kuhn of Salem, age 64, will be held Friday at 1:30 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 11:00 to 1:00 Friday at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the CFCA.

Funeral services for Ellis Earl Gray, Sr. of Salem, age 84 will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday night from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Viburnum Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Dry Fork Baptist Church.

Memorial services for Herbert Junior Hoffmann of Rolla, age 75, will be held Saturday at 12:00 (noon) at the Rolla Church of Christ in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 10:00 in the morning until service time on Saturday at the church. Special services will be held at the church by the Missouri Highway Patrol Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to the Phelps Regional Hospice. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Carlton E. (Gene) Bay of Salem, age 84, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church in Salem.
