The Dent County Commission met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 6240, 6400 and 6470. He said that brush was still being cut on Dent County Road 5615, and that rock will be hauled to Dent County Road 2470. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2270, 5225 and 6160, and brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 4280. He said that he sent a man to Springfield to get oil for the Durapatcher to repair chip and seal roads. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he would be attending a Meramec Community Enhancement Corporation Board meeting today where they will review a number of programs under their umbrella. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that the last day to register to vote in the April election is Wednesday, March 9
th. Absentee voting is still going on and will until Monday, April 4
th. She also reported that the clerk’s office and treasurer’s office balance on all accounts from February. Donald Dodd representing the Industrial Development Authority came by to discuss the payment for the federal audit that the county had to have done because the county received over $500,000 in monies from the federal government. Dodd said that the IDA made a motion that they would pay up to half of the amount owed ($7,500.00) of the audit. After some discussion, the commissioners agreed that the IDA should pay half of the cost and the county would pay the other $7,500.00 of the audit. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
An accident occurred on Sunday, March 6th at 2:05 in the afternoon in Dent County on Dent County Road 5310 near Boss. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Chevy 1500 driven by 38-year old Kelly Moore of Boss was traveling eastbound on county road 5310. An 8-year old boy was riding in the bed of the truck and jumped out to retrieve a dog. The Chevy began to back up and struck Langdon Moore. Moore suffered serious injury and was flown by Air Evac to St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
The Salem Police Department released their reports for the end of February. On Thursday, February 24th at 4:00 in the afternoon, an officer transported a 38-year old male of Springfield, to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Sunday, February 27th at 6:55 in the evening, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a domestic assault. The investigation of the report revealed that a 32-year old Salem male had assaulted a 25-year old Salem female. The report is under investigation. On Monday, February 28th at 11:35 pm, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 17-year old male and an 18-year old male both of Salem, for minors in possession of intoxicants. Both were issued summons to appear in court and released.
Construction crews are scheduled begin work on a resurfacing project on Highway 72 in Phelps and Dent County this week. Weather permitting, crews and equipment will be on the roadway from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Crews will be working to resurface 9.330 miles of Highway 72, from Phelps County Road 5220 to Dent County Road 2090. While construction continues, the area will be reduced to one-lane and a pilot car will guide motorists through the work zone. Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the work zone. The Salem Tiger Winter Sports Banquet will be held tonight at 6:30 at the Salem High School Cafeteria. The banquet will honor the Boys and Girls basketball teams and the cheerleaders.
The third annual Missouri National Archery in the Schools (MoNASP) state tournament was held on February 25th and 26th at Linn State Technical College and drew 857 students in grades 4th through 12th from 49 schools across the state. Winning teams and individuals, along with other teams and individuals who had qualifying scores, will go on to compete in the National Archery in the Schools (NASP) national tournament in Louisville, Kentucky on May 13th and 14th. MoNASP is coordinated through the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) in partnership with schools and supporting organizations throughout the state. The top-scoring male student was 7th grader Colton Fry of North Wood R-IV in Salem. In addition to trophies, Fry also received a special edition Genesis Bow. Other Salem individuals that received qualifying scores for the national tournament included 6th grader Dalton Cook, 4th Grader Sam Ball, and 4th grader Londyn Cook.
Alexander Steen scored the decisive shootout goal, and the St. Louis Blues edged the Columbus Blue Jackets, 5-4, in the opener of a home-and-home series at Scottrade Center. Andy McDonald tallied twice in regulation for the Blues, who snapped a four- game losing streak. Bishop made 19 saves in relief of Ty Conklin, who was pulled midway through the first period after allowing three goals on eight shots. Columbus will host the Blues on Wednesday night at 6:00 on KSMO.
David Freese drove in three runs to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Minnesota Twins, 10-4, in Grapefruit League action. Jon Jay and Matt Carpenter both had two RBI for the Cardinals, while Allen Craig finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. St. Louis' Jake Westbrook gave up one run on four hits in 3 2/3 innings.
A.J. Pollock hit a three-run homer as part of a four-run top of the ninth, lifting the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 8-6 win over the Kansas City Royals in Cactus League action. Kila Ka'aihue clubbed a three-run homer and Melky Cabrera and Clint Robinson each had a solo shot in defeat. Kevin Pucetas was tagged with the loss for allowing four runs on three hits in the top of the ninth.

Graveside services for Robert J. Ditmeyer of Salem, age 69, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Miles Cemetery in rural St. James. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Hospice or Miles Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.
