An accident occurred at 5:24 pm Saturday afternoon on Interstate 44 at the 194-mile marker about one mile west of St James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Suzuki Motorcycle driven by 28-year-old TJ Myers of Salem, was traveling east on I-44. At that time, a 2003 Suzuki Motorcycle driven by Jessie Carroll of Brinktown, Missouri, was also traveling east on I-44. The accident occurred as Myers was following Carroll in the left lane. Then Myers attempted to pass Carroll on the right while Carroll was merging into the right lane. Both vehicles collided. Myers suffered moderate injuries and was transported by St James EMS to Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The 2003 Suzuki sustained minor damage while the 2002 Suzuki sustained no damage. Both vehicles were driven from the scene.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their regularly scheduled monthly meeting last Tuesday night. After approval of the consent agenda, the board then reviewed bills and signed checks, then reviewed reimbursements for the 26 fire calls that occurred in February. In new business, the board approved the request from the Bonebrake Center to use fire district parking lot on May 29th for the Roots Festival. Chief Brad Nash then gave his report. He stated that the officer replacement search was in progress but there was nothing to report at this time. He also stated that the 100 Acre Wood Rally went really well. Nash then reported that Tanker #84 was out of service until a tire could be replaced, and that the District has replaced some of the items damaged in the American Auto fire including gloves, deck gun, and hose. Nash also reported to the board that the parking lot is in need of repair after the hard winter and asked the board to look into repair. No action was taken on the parking lot. He also asked the board about painting the outside of the building, and after a discussion, the board asked Chief Nash to get bids to paint the outside. The board then went into executive session to discuss personnel. The next scheduled meeting will be held on April 6th at 6:00 p.m. at the Dent County Fire Protection District building.

The Public Water Supply District #1 of Dent County will conduct their monthly meeting at the Salem Community Center located at 606 North McGrath Lane on Tuesday, March 9th beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, the Board will hear reports including financial reports, the president’s report, a bookkeeping report and the water testing report. After a general discussion and any new business that may come before the Board, the Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The regular monthly meeting of the Public Water Supply District #1 of Dent County is open to the public.

On Tuesday March 2nd, the Missouri Dental Association Board of Trustees honored Representative Jason Smith with their 2009 MDA Legislative Excellence Award.  This award serves as the MDA’s recognition of Representative Smith’s dedication and commitment to access for dental care in rural Missouri.

The Dent County Schools, Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III, and Northwood R-IV, will be closed on Friday, March 12th and Monday, March 15th.  Classes will resume on Tuesday, March 16th.

The Salem High School Winter Sports Banquet will be held on Tuesday, March 9th at 6:30 at the Salem High School Cafeteria for the Boys and Girls varsity and JV basketball teams, the cheerleaders and the parents of those who participated.

Tyshawn Taylor led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points while delivering six assists, as second-ranked Kansas closed out its regular season with a sound 77-56 defeat of Missouri at Mizzou Arena. Kim English put in a game-high 16 points for the Tigers (22-9, 10-6), who had won four of their last five coming in and should prove to a dangerous opponent in the Big 12 Tournament set to kick off March 10th. Laurence Bowers donated 10 points and six rebounds, and J.T. Tiller scored nine in defeat.

Chris Stewart netted the first hat trick of his career and added an assist as the Colorado Avalanche took a 7-3 win over the St. Louis Blues at Pepsi Center. Alexander Steen had two goals and David Perron added a goal for the Blues, who had a five-game winning streak snapped. Chris Mason started in net, but was pulled in the second period for giving up four goals on 15 shots. Ty Conklin played the rest of the game and gave up two goals on 17 shots. St. Louis continues its six-game road trip in New York on Thursday in a game against the Islanders.

Joe Mather drove in four runs on two hits to help the St. Louis Cardinals take a 7-4 win over the Florida Marlins in Grapefruit League play. Yadier Molina went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored and Daniel Descalso also drove in a run for the Cardinals, who had dropped their first three games of the preseason. Kyle McClellan got the win in the start as over three innings he gave up just one hit and struck out four. The Cardinals will face the Boston Red Sox today.

Sunday's scheduled Cactus League game between the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals has been rained out. On Saturday, the Royals beat Texas, 2-1.Today, Kansas City will battle Cincinnati.

The Kansas City Royals announced Sunday that third baseman Alex Gordon is expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks with a broken right thumb, leaving his status for Opening Day unclear. Gordon was hurt when sliding into second base on an attempted steal in the second inning of Saturday's spring training game against Texas.

The St. Louis Rams announced Saturday they have signed quarterback A.J. Feeley and re-signed safety Craig Dahl.

The Kansas City Chiefs re-signed wide receiver Terrance Copper on Saturday.

Funeral services Funeral services for Pauline L. Morris of Salem, formerly of St. Louis, age 97, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Christian Church.

Funeral services for Clyde Ellas Wilkinson of Cherryville, age 76, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Steelville. 

Funeral services for Virginia Pyatt of Steelville, age 99, will be held Wednesday at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Grubville.

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Duncan of Salem, age 72, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Bessie Caroline McWhorter of Rolla, age 83, will be held Wednesday at 100 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time Wednesday. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the family of Bessie McWhorter.
