The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that his crews were continuing to apply sand and salt to slick spots on hills and curves. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that his crews were also treating slick spots. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that Wednesday afternoon he attended the hearing in Jefferson City on Senate Bill 835, which is the bill to raise the sheriffs’ salaries. Skiles, along with about 15 county commissioners from across the state attended the hearing, and he testified in opposition to the bill. He said that he felt those testifying in opposition to the bill did an excellent job of explaining why they oppose the bill and that their stand was well received by the committee. Skiles went on to say that those testifying in support of the bill had a very difficult time justifying their position and were questioned in great detail by the committee members. Aaron Jeffries of the Missouri Department of Conservation has contacted Skiles to invite the Commissioners to a tour of the Elk Restoration Zone at Peck Ranch on March 18th. The Commissioners will need to decide if they would like to attend. Skiles said that he had asked Jeffries if media representatives from KSMO and the Salem News could attend the tour and had been told that the department would conduct a separate tour for news media. All three commissioners will be attending the South Central District Commissioners Association meeting in Houston on Friday and that 8th District Congressman Jason Smith will be meeting with the group.  Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that the South Central County Clerks Association was also meeting Friday in Houston. Curley reminded the public that the last day to register for the April 8th election is March 12th and that the deadline to file for a county office is March 25th.  Curley added that anyone that has had an address change should stop by her office and update their records. Curley also said that her office balanced on all accounts with the Dent County Treasurer and with the Dent County Collector on all collections, abatements and add-ons. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday at 9:00 and it is open to the public.

Time to spring forward this weekend as time changes to Daylight Savings Time. You can either set your clock ahead one hour before retiring for bed Saturday night or you’re your clock forward an hour when you get up Sunday morning.

The University of Missouri Extension will be holding the 2014 Dent County Extension Lunch and Learn Series starting today. Celebrate 100 years of the Extension with free lunch and informational sessions. Bring your lunch and learn the most up to date information and research about a range of topics. The March Lunch and Learn series features Family Education Specialist Chantae Alfred and money management sessions. The first of the series, Money Matters: Budgeting/How to Keep Track of Your Money, will be held today. The second will be held on Friday, March 14th and it is titled Identity Theft: What is it and How Can You Protect Yourself. The third in the series will be on Friday, March 21st and it will be When Creditors are Predators: Excessive Fees/ Aggressive Tactics. The last one in the series will be on Friday, April 4th and it is called Credit: Why is Your Credit Important. Each session will be held at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory, located at 1200 West Rolla Road, and they will be from noon to 1:00 p.m. Attend one session or attend them all. Ryan Miller turned aside 20-of-21 shots to remain unbeaten in a Blues' uniform as the St. Louis Blues took a 2-1 decision over the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena. Magnus Paajarvi recorded the game-winning score with 8:18 elapsed in the second period, with Ian Cole registering a goal and an assist to help the Blues remain two points ahead of rival Chicago for first place in the Central Division. The Blues will play the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday at 2:00 in the afternoon. KSMO will play this game back on a taped delayed basis at 6:00. The Blues will also play the Minnesotta Wild on Sunday and you can hear that game live on KSMO at 6:30.

The Spring Training game scheduled for yesterday between the St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesotta Twins was cancelled due to rain. The Cardinals will play the Marlins and Mets today in split squad games. The Cards will also play the Nationals on Saturday and Sunday. You can hear those games on KSMO at 11:45.

Jim Edmonds, Bob Forsch, Keith Hernandez, Willie McGee, Mark McGwire, Matt Morris, Ted Simmons and Joe Torre were revealed as the eight players nominated for possible induction into the new St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame. The eight modern ballot nominees, selected by a “Red Ribbon” committee of Cardinals baseball experts through a secret ballot process, will appear on the first-ever Cardinals Hall of Fame ballot online at cardinals.com/HOF. Voting commences today. The two players with the most fan votes after voting concludes on April 22nd will be inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame this August. The St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame was established as a way to recognize the exceptional careers and significant achievements of the greatest players in Cardinals history. The Inaugural Class, consisting of 22 Cardinals who are either enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame as Cardinals or whose number has been retired by the club, will automatically be part of the Hall of Fame upon the dedication of the museum and Hall of Fame on Opening Day in St. Louis.  

The White Sox scored twice in the top of the ninth, and the Cactus League game between Chicago and Kansas City ended in a 6-6 tie. Alex Gordon was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Royals, who got three shutout innings from starter Jason Vargas. The Royals will play the Giants this afternoon at 2:05.

The Missouri Tiger basketball team will close out their regular season on Saturday when they play at Tennessee. Missouri is 21-9 on the year and 9-8 in the SEC. You can hear the game on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 2:30.

Funeral services for Joe A. Wofford of Salem, age 80, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sunshine & Rainbow Day School Licking Church of Christ or the American Cancer Society.

Memorial service for Henry Lewis Volluz of St. James, age 57, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Landmark Baptist Church in Rolla. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Bernice Hayes of Steelville, age 86, will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Saturday night from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Lick Creek Cemetery in Cuba.

Funeral services for Carold L. Jack of St. Louis, will be held Monday morning at 10:00 at the Fee Fee Baptist Church in Salem. Visitation will be held at the Colliers Funeral Home Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may given to the Corinth Cemetery.
