The public should be prepared for reduced hours and services provided by Ozark National Scenic Riverways employees due to the sequestration. With the loss of $326,681 in funding, sequestration planning includes eliminating interpretive programs, evening campfire programs, and Round Spring Cave tours in one park district. The Big Spring Campground will be open in the summer months, but will plan to be closed the rest of the year. Trash collection, water service, and restroom janitorial services are being prepped for elimination or curtailed for all of the smaller campgrounds. As of this time, Heritage Day, Alley Spring Independence Day Celebration, Ozark Dinner Theater, and Haunting in the Hills events are cancelled. Potential impacts for Law Enforcement Rangers include having fewer supplies and materials to meet minimum needs. A planned 75% reduction in natural and cultural resource conditions monitoring could impact compliance requirements and project deadlines. The park recognizes that local communities and businesses rely on the park’s recreational opportunities to support their livelihoods. The park’s sequestration planning is attempting to lessen the impacts. A 2011 peer-review spending analysis of Ozark National Scenic Riverways done by Michigan State University for the National Park Service showed that 1,365,960 visitors spent $65,280,000 in and around the park and local communities. That supported 861 local jobs. Most visitor spending supported jobs in lodging, food, and beverage service (63%) followed by recreation and entertainment (17%), other retail (11%), transportation and fuel (7%), and wholesale and manufacturing (2%). The 62nd Annual Variety Show and Miss Salem Pageant will be held Saturday, March 9th at 7:00 p.m. at the Salem City Hall. David Massengale will serve as Master of Ceremonies and Lindsey Purcell, the current Miss Salem will be in attendance. Various acts will include Tonya Treat, the Sixth Grade Drama Club, the First Baptist Quartet, four dance groups from Linda Maledy's Academy of Dance, Ecumenical Eight, Stanley McElfresh, and Jesse Frausto. Girls competing for the title of Miss Salem 2013 include Carly Green, Anndy Hill, Ashlee LaRue, Paige Arnett, Joy Malott, Kendra Ragsdale, Katelyn Connell, Kirsten Land, Cortney Putman. In addition to Miss Salem, a first and second runner up will be announced and the girls will choose a Miss Personality.

The Salem Winter Sports banquet was held Tuesday night at the High School Cafeteria honoring the boys and girls’ basketball teams and cheerleaders. Coach Jake Reardon awarded the awards for the Lady Basketball Tigers and the “Scoreboard” Award for scoring the most points was captured by Savannah Hanning, the “Floor General” Award went to Kristin Hemken for the girl who runs the show on the floor, the “Warrior” Award was presented to Ashley Crocker for rebounding and playing underneath the basket, the “Defensive Player of the Year” Award went to Gabrielle Sanderson and Emily Moser earned the “Most Improved Player” Award. Coach Reardon also presented two girls with SCA Conference Awards and they were Savannah Hanning, who was named to the All-SCA 2nd Team, and Kristin Hemken who was named to the All-SCA Honorable Mention Team. One Lady Tiger, Savannah Hanning, was also named to the Class 4, District 10 “All-District” Team for her efforts in District play. Coach Phillip McClintock presented the awards for the boys’ team and the Offensive MVP Award went to Chad Elliott who led the team in scoring. The Co-Defensive MVP Awards were presented to Jake Arzt & Brady Floyd. The “Newcomer of the Year” Award went to Logan Pogue and the “Mr. Hustle” Award went to Zayne Kyser. The “Tiger of the Year” Award went to Logan Pogue and that award went to the player that shows leadership on and off the court. Coach McClintock also presented the SCA Awards to the players and Chad Elliott, who is a member of the MBCA (Missouri Basketball Coaches Association) All-District team, was named to the All-SCA Conference 1st Team, while Brady Floyd and Cody Whitaker where named to the All-SCA Honorable Mention Team. The City of Salem Spring Youth Soccer program will be starting soon for all children ages 4-12 years and Spring Youth Soccer sign-ups will be held today and Friday, March 8th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the front lobby of the Salem Community Center @ the Armory located at 1200 West Rolla Road; and on Saturday, March 9th from 9:00 am to 12:00 (noon) at the Salem High School Gym. The final sign-ups will then be held on Thursday, March 14th and Friday, March 15th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the front lobby of the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. The cost is $20 per child. The St. Louis Blues will be in Phoenix tonight to take on the Coyotes starting at 7:30 with the pre-game show on KSMO Radio. The Blues are 0-2 so far on this five game road trip and have lost five of the last seven games.
The 2013 Cardinal pocket schedules have arrived! Those schedules can be picked up at businesses around town that sponsor Cardinal baseball games heard on KSMO Radio as well as in the front office of the KSMO studio.
