The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released a report for an incident that took place on Wednesday, March 5^th. At 10:30 in the morning, a Bourbon Police Officer attempted to stop a black, Chevrolet Cavalier in Bourbon after recognizing it matched the description of a vehicle that had previously eluded the Sullivan Police Department during a pursuit. The vehicle refused to stop and the Bourbon Officer initiated a pursuit. The pursuit continued north from Bourbon and into Gasconade County, and then south on Route J, back into Crawford County. The pursuit ended at the intersection of Route J and Fann Road, where the vehicle crashed and an officer involved shooting occurred. The suspect, 50-year old Gary Eugene Wenzel of Bourbon, was fatally wounded. The officer sustained no injuries. The investigation of the officer involved in the shooting is being conducted by the Troop I Unit of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control. The investigation is ongoing and an autopsy and coroner’s inquest have been scheduled.

The Cosmopolitan Club 63rd Miss Salem Pageant and Variety Show, entitled, “Swinging on a Star” will be held this Saturday, March 8th at the City Hall Auditorium beginning at 7:00 pm. Miss Salem candidates include Angelica Miller, Jessica Cason, Lauren Anderson, Taylor Frizzell, Januarie Blanchard, Sarah Chase, Katie Usery, Anndy Hill, Nicole Hall, Gracie Fiaoni, Kaylin Inman and Kirsten Land. Escorting the girls will be Josh Brown, Ashton Hampton, Nick Terrill and Austin Wulff. Performances during the show will include Linda Maledy with four groups of dancers, the Ecumenical Singers, Stanley McElfresh, the First Baptist Quartet, and a 5th and 6th grade skit. David Massengale will be the Master of Ceremonies and Catherine Dent will be the Narrator. The Flower Girl will be Baylee Parks and the Crown Bearer will be Lawson Davis. The cost to attend the show is $5 for adults, and $3.00 for children age 12 and under.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 6:00 pm. In bids, the City of Salem had requested bids for a recycling trailer that were due February 26^th and those bids will be presented. After approval of the agenda in unfinished business, the City had requested bids for the clean-up of 817 East Gibbs. The City held a public hearing on February 4^th allowing the owners a chance to speak as to what their intentions were to the property. Those bids will also be presented. City Administrator Ray Walden will update the Board on items concerning the city, and Mayor Gary Brown will then give his report. During the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions,  the Planning & Zoning Commission at their last meeting recommended adding a Conditional Use Permit for Counseling or Professional Services to the City Code Book, which was approved by the Board. Bill #3277 is required in order to add the Conditional Use to the new Code Book. In new and miscellaneous business, a bill for over $3,000 will be presented to the Board by Superintendent Emory as he is requesting permission to have a pump at the waste water treatment facility repaired and the quote totals $4,173.28 to repair the pump. Alderman Giacomelli wishes to discuss the City’s Business and Merchants Licenses. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing contracts. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Although 54,000 Missourians have selected Missouri Health Insurance Marketplace plans, thousands more are still without coverage despite the March 31st deadline to obtain health insurance or pay a fine. If you still haven’t enrolled or are having difficulty, this Saturday, March 8th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., navigators will be on site at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center Training Facility to answer questions & help individuals enroll. There will also be a brief info session every hour on the hour. Call (573) 458-3676 for more information. If you can’t make it on Saturday, you can call the Central Missouri Area Agency on Aging at 729-5697, 364-8238, or 265-0616, or you can e-mail them at cmaaa@cmaaa.net and make an appointment to meet at the Salem Senior Center at 604 McGrath Lane, or at the Central Missouri Area Agencies on Aging in Rolla or St. James. Do specify the county that you live in when you call or e-mail. Remember, there is no penalty if you are enrolled by March 31^st.

The Salem License Bureau will be closed today and Friday, March 7^th while they are making the transition to the new contractor. If you need any help during this transition time, the Licking office will be open.
