The 62nd Annual Variety Show and Miss Salem Pageant will be held Saturday, March 9th at 7:00 p.m. at the Salem City Hall. David Massengale will serve as Master of Ceremonies and Lindsey Purcell, the current Miss Salem will be in attendance. Various acts will include Tonya Treat, the Sixth Grade Drama Club, the First Baptist Quartet, four dance groups from Linda Maledy's Academy of Dance, Ecumenical Eight, Stanley McElfresh, and Jesse Frausto. Girls competing for the title of Miss Salem 2013 include Carly Green, Anndy Hill, Ashlee LaRue, Paige Arnett, Joy Malott, Kendra Ragsdale, Katelyn Connell, Kirsten Land, Cortney Putman. In addition to Miss Salem, a first and second runner up will be announced and the girls will choose a Miss Personality.
The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of February. During the month, they wrote two equipment repair orders, 18 summons to appear in court, 17 warning tickets, and 47 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 13 accidents, three assaults, two reports of disorderly conduct, four reports of driving while intoxicated, four reports of driving while revoked, one report of driving while suspended, one report of failure to obey lawful order of an officer, one report of a false impersonation, four reports of forgery, one report of identity theft, and one report of a lost and/or stolen license plate. The department also investigated one report for open containers, one report of resisting and/or interfering with arrest, 12 reports of stealing, one report of theft from the US mail, two reports of trespassing, one report of unlawful use of a weapon, one report of a violation of an exparte/full order of protection and one 96-hour commitment. They also investigated one report of possession of opium or derivative, two reports of possession of drug paraphernalia and one report of possession of synthetic drugs. The Salem Police Department also conducted one death investigation during the month. The police department received 1,304 calls for service during the month, handled 76 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 52 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 10 hours in court testifying, three hours as court bailiff and spent 20 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in February included 26 for escorts, two for an intoxicated driver, one for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, one for an intoxicated pedestrian, five for domestic disputes, and there were seven calls for a wrecker. There were two 911 calls, three for a peace disturbance, two for alarms sounding, two for fights in progress, and nine ambulance assist calls came in during the month. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,398 miles and arrested 17 males and 8 females during the month of February.
A Civil War living history event will be held on Saturday, March 9th at Fort Davidson State Historic Site in Pilot Knob in Iron County. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, with assistance from the re-enacting unit, the Turner Brigade, the event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The Turner Brigade is a Union Civil War re-enacting group made up of infantry, artillery, cavalry and civilian units. The event will get under way with muster and spring drill. Spring was traditionally the time during the war when units would reorganize after a long winter, readying themselves for the summer and fall battle campaign season. There will be ongoing small arms and artillery drills throughout the day. The re-enactors will be in Civil War costume and portray life in military and refugee camps at the time. The BANK OF SALEM is sponsoring the Tuesday, March 12th Salem Area Chamber members’ luncheon meeting. This meeting will be held at Southwest Baptist University, 501 South Grand, beginning at noon. Salem R-80 School District Superintendent Steve Carvajal will speak about the school bond issue that will be on the April ballot. The bond would put into effect a debt service levy of 45 cents per $100 of assessed property valuation. This would cover the cost of improvements to district schools, including new heating and ventilation, classroom expansion, and safety and security upgrades. Laurence Bowers hung up a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds as the Missouri Tigers rolled over the Arkansas Razorbacks, 93-63, in a SEC matchup at Mizzou Arena. Jabari Brown poured in 23 points, Earnest Ross chipped in 11 off the bench and Alex Oriakhi tallied 10 points and eight rebounds for Missouri (22-8, 11-6 SEC), which finished with a perfect 17-0 record at home this season. Missouri will finish up their regular season on Saturday when they play at Tennessee at 2:30.
Jeff Carter's go-ahead goal capped a furious comeback as the Los Angeles Kings took a 6-4 win over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. Chris Stewart, Alex Pietrangelo and David Perron each gave a goal and an assist and Vladimir Sobotka also scored for the Blues, who have lost five of their last seven. The Blues will be in Phoenix Thursday night to play the Coyotes at 8:00.
The Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will resume their spring training schedule against the Miami Marlins this afternoon at 12:05.
Brandon Wood hit a two-run homer, Brett Hayes launched a solo shot and the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics, 8-2, in Cactus League action. Alcides Escobar had two hits and scored a run for the Royals, while Bruce Chen tossed three solid innings. The veteran lefthander gave up just two hits. The Royals will play the Diamondbacks today at 2:10.
