The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning at the courthouse. In the road report, both Commissioners reported that roads are really soft to do much this week. District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5080, 5610 and 6090; and rock would be hauled in to Dent County Road 6090. Purcell also said that brush cutting would be done on Dent County Road 5580. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 6160, and the crews would be edge rutting and cutting grass along the chip and seal roads so that standing water would be able to run off the roadways. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he and Commissioner Purcell attended a meeting in Willow Springs on Wednesday with MoDOT where they talked about projects. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the last day to register to vote for the April 7th election would be Wednesday, March 11th. The last day to request a mail out ballot will be April 1st and the last day to absentee vote is April 6th. The courthouse will be open on Saturday, April 4th for absentee voting from 8:00 am to 12:00 (NOON). The Commission then expressed their concerns with a House Bill #664, introduced by Representative Jason Smith, which states that qualifying motor vehicles, which would include those commonly driven by Missourians as well as recreational vehicles and automobiles registered as historic motor vehicles be eliminated from property tax by the year 2013. The bill would place the assessed value at 26% of the vehicle’s true value for 2009 and then decrease each year until the elimination of all property tax on motor vehicles by the year 2013. Presiding Commissioner Skiles expressed his concern with the fact that the elimination of that much tax money would greatly affect the schools, the fire department, the road and bridge department and more. The Commission contacted Representative Smith and he assured them that the bill would not move forward without a revenue stream in place to replace the loss of that money. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a stolen cell phone. On Monday, March 2nd, a follow up was conducted on a report from February 14th in reference to a stolen cell phone. Further investigation led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem man for the theft. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released.

An accident occurred on Highway 63 in Phelps County about seven miles south of Edgar Springs Thursday afternoon at 2:00. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 Dodge Pickup driven northbound by 63-year old Edward L. Davis of Edgar Springs, traveled off the left side of the roadway and across a county road before coming to rest on the east side of Highway 63. Davis suffered injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the EMS, but was pronounced dead by the acting coroner K.V. Lucas as a result of a medical condition. Davis was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene by Lucas Garage of Edgar Springs.
