Volunteers for AARP are still conducting free tax filing assistance at the Salem Community Center@ the Armory computer lab this year.  This free tax filing assistance will continue every Friday until April 11^th. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are trained in filing certain tax forms and schedules, including the Form 1040. Some of the items you will need to bring with you to have your tax returns prepared: Proof of identification such as a picture ID; Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents. You must also provide birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return; Wage and earning statement(s) including Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc from all employers; Year-end Social Security Statements showing total SS received and Medicare payments; interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099); a copy of last year’s federal and state returns if available; and proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit, such as a blank check or deposit slip. You should also provide the total amount paid for a daycare provider and the daycare provider's tax identifying number. Finally, to file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. Appointments may be made by calling the Salem Community Center@ the Armory at 729-8163.

An accident occurred on Monday, February 24^th at 5:34 in the evening on Highway 32 at MaCarthur. According to the Salem Police report, a 2001 Ford Explorer driven by Stacey Lee of Salem was driving east on highway 32 near the intersection of MaCarthur. Lee stated she drove into the turn lane to turn into the Town and Country Bank parking lot. Lee stated she had a seizure and while in the seizure state, drove off the left side of the roadway striking a curb, continued east through the parking lot crossing Henderson. She then left the roadway of Henderson, continued east through a small field and drove off into a ditch and collided with an embankment. Lee was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital and was released with minor injuries. The Ford Explorer sustained minor damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker Towing.

The Dent County University of Missouri Extension will be offering a Private Pesticide Applicator Training Program on Tuesday, March 11^th at 6:30 pm at the Extension Office Conference Room located on the second floor of the Judicial Building in Salem. Will McClain, University of Missouri Extension Agronomy Specialist will be instructing this course for those who wish to purchase and apply restricted-use pesticides. By participating in this training session, individuals will meet the Missouri Department of Agriculture requirements to obtain a license to purchase and apply restricted-use pesticides for private use.  Those individuals who need to renew an expiring restricted-use pesticide license are eligible to attend this session to have those licenses renewed. There is no charge for this course, but all participants are now required to purchase the new “Private Pesticide Applicator Reference Manual” to be eligible to renew or apply for a license. The cost of the manual is $12. The course will take approximately 2 hours to complete. This course is only for those people who produce agriculture commodities (farmers) and who desire to apply these pesticides for private use.  Those individuals who are interested in commercial, dealer or other pesticide licenses should call 573-751-5504. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released a few more arrest reports for Dent County. On Tuesday, March 4^th at 4:30 in the afternoon, 24-year old Terri Crow of Jackson was arrested and charged with possession of synthetic canabanoid, display or possession of a revoked license, and failure to wear a seat belt. A little later at 4:45, 62-year old Doyle Moit of Jackson was arrested and charged with felony 4^th offense of no valid license, exceeding the posted speed limit and failure to wear a seat belt. They were taken to the Dent County Jail and later released.

Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel announced he has returned nearly $10,000 in Unclaimed Property to the American Red Cross. It is common for nonprofit organizations to have Unclaimed Property, and Treasurer Zweifel praised the American Red Cross for frequently checking to see if he was holding Unclaimed Property for them. Treasurer Zweifel currently holds more than $810 million in Unclaimed Property for more than 4.7 million account owners. Anyone with Unclaimed Property – including individuals, businesses, nonprofit organizations and local governments – may go to www.ShowMeMoney.com to search the database or sign up for email alerts to notify account owners when Unclaimed Property matching their information is added.
