The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving a DWI and a search warrant. On February 29th, at 12:15 in the morning, a Dent County Deputy was dispatched to Route U in regards to a suspicious vehicle. The vehicle was located and a further investigation led to a 32-year old female being taken into custody and issued a summons for Operating a Motor Vehicle while in an Intoxicated Condition. On March 1st, at 11:31 in the evening, the Dent County Sheriff's Department, assisted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Salem Police Department K-9 Unit, served a search warrant at a residence located off of Route HH south of Salem. Taken into evidence as a result of the search were a brown paper bag containing a green leafy substance which tested positive for marijuana, metal scales, metal tin containing a clip and rolling papers, plastic baggies, Fentanyl patches and a baggie containing seeds. As a result a 45-year old male was taken into custody and charged with Possession with Intent to distribute/deliver a Controlled Substance and Possession of Controlled substance. Bond was set at $25,000.00.
The Salem Arts Council brings the arts to our community with the Annual “Arts Across the Ages” exhibit. The exhibit is now open through March 28th, Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 to 5:00 at the Ozarks Cultural & Natural Resource Center. This is a show of work done by local school students, area artists and craftsmen depicting the diversity of art created by all generations.
The Cosmopolitan Club will present their 57th Annual Variety Show/Miss Salem Pageant on Saturday, March 8th at the Salem City Hall beginning at 7:30 pm. The 17 Miss Salem Contestants are: Jessica Brand, Kaley Hubbs, Kathy Lowery, Lyndi Wisdom, Megan Johnson, Christine Boardman, Kendra Quick, Karen Ashburn, Allison Hall, Markie Keys, Samantha Lundy, Katie Hunt, Hannah Kettner, Alivia Elliott, Sarah Privett, Amy Milligan and Sara Barton. Admission is $5.00 for adults and children under 12 is $3.00. The proceeds will go back into the community for scholarships and other needs around the area.
If you are a teacher and looking for ways to prepare your students to do better on MAP testing, you will be interested in this workshop “Teaching With Art”. Selected topics will include: recognition of money, telling time, creative and non-fiction writing, invention, problem solving and using master works of art that depict history. Sharon Jeffus, a graduate of John Brown University and has a B.S.S.E. in Art Education, certification to teach English from the University of Arkansas and has written over 20 books will be the teacher. This is a six-hour workshop that will be held at the Salem TCRC, located in the Salem Freedom Activity Center at 1200 West Rolla Road, on Monday, March 17th and Tuesday, March 18th from 6:00 to 9:00 and the cost is $75. U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson wants to remind 8th Congressional District residents that they must file a federal tax return this year to be eligible for economic stimulus tax rebates, even if they do not ordinarily do so. Eligibility depends on the person filing a federal tax return and anyone who had more than $3,000 in income from Social Security or Veterans disability benefits must do this in order to receive the tax rebate check. The deadline for filing federal income tax returns for 2007 is Tuesday, April 15th and the U.S. Treasury will begin issuing tax rebate checks to eligible Americans in May.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will hold their March membership meeting on Wednesday, March 12th at the Salem TCRC located at 1200 West Rolla Road at noon. Sergeant Dan Crain of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Troop I, will be presenting the program, which uses a powerful video with testimonies and crash photos entitled, “How To Save A Life”. Sergeant Crain will also be speaking on other programs that are available through the Missouri State Highway Patrol including; Understanding Crash Dynamics, Road Rage, Recognizing Drug Impairment, Preventing Underage Drinking and Operation Lifesaver.
The City of Salem will be conducting the monthly recycling the third Saturday March. The City will be recycling glass, #1 and #2 plastic and tin on Saturday, March 15th and that will be conducted at the corner of Third Street and Grand Streets in Salem.

The Basketball and Cheerleading Banquet scheduled for last night was postponed and rescheduled for Monday, March 10th at 6:30.
Ryan Johnson scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period as the St. Louis Blues snapped a six-game losing streak and edged the Los Angeles Kings, 3-2, at Scottrade Center. Andy McDonald and Keith Tkachuk both scored for the Blues. Manny Legace stopped 30-of-32 shots to earn the win for St. Louis. The Blues will be in Detroit tonight at 6:30. The Missouri Tigers will host Iowa State tonight starting at 6:30 on KSMO. Missouri is 15-14 on the year and 5-9 in the Big 12. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio
St. Louis Cardinals have signed pitchers Blake Hawksworth, Kelvin Jimenez, Tyler Johnson, Josh Kinney, Kyle McClellan, Jason Motte, Mike Parisi and Mark Worrell; infielders Brian Barden, Jarrett Hoffpauir and Brendan Ryan; and outfielders Brian Barton, Cody Haerther, Ryan Ludwick, Joe Mather and Skip Schumaker; renewed the contracts of pitchers Adam Wainwright and Anthony Reyes.
Melvin Mora was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with four runs batted in and three runs scored to lead the Baltimore Orioles over the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-2 in Grapefruit League action. Colby Rasmus went 2-for-3 with two RBI, including a solo home run in the loss. Anthony Reyes absorbed the loss after giving up for four runs on six hits in only two innings.
Alberto Callaspo belted a two-run homer, as the Kansas City Royals roughed up the Colorado Rockies, 11-5, in Cactus League action. Miguel Olivo knocked in a pair and Brett Tomko pitched four innings for the Royals, allowing three runs on four hits, including two home runs.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire. The 38-year-old Favre apparently informed the Packers of his decision within the last few days. The veteran quarterback has flirted with retirement over the last several years but came back each time and rebounded to have one of his best seasons a season ago. The future Hall-of-Famer led the Packers to the NFC Championship game in 2007 after throwing for 4,155 yards and 28 touchdowns and compiling a 95.7 passer rating.
The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly come to terms on a contract with linebacker Demorrio Willams. The Kansas City Star reports the deal is for five years and worth $16 million, with $5.5 million guaranteed. The Chiefs have also claimed fullback Oliver Hoyte off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys.
St. Louis Rams have signed guard Jacob Bell to a six-year contract.
The San Francisco 49ers signed free agent and former St. Louis Ram wide receiver Isaac Bruce on Tuesday. According to a report on the San Jose Mercury-News website last Friday, the contact is for two years and $6 million. Bruce was released last week by St. Louis, where he had became the franchise's all-time leading receiver.
