The annual statewide tornado drill scheduled for today has been postponed until Thursday, March 6^th at 1:30 pm due to a number of factors, very cold weather and others. The National Weather Service will kick off the drill with a Tornado Warning, which is plainly marked as a test. This test will cause NOAA Weather Radios to activate, and it is also a hope that every community will set off their sirens and media stations will forward the drill as if this were a real emergency. Next, it will be up to every business and family to participate in the drill by putting their plans into action. 

The Salem Police Department has released a few reports. On Friday, February 21^st at 6:06 in the evening, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to an assault.  That investigation revealed that a 54-year old Salem male had assaulted a 21-year old Salem female. He was arrested for disorderly conduct and assault, issued summonses to appear in court, and released. On Wednesday, February 26^th at 3:26 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The investigation revealed that someone entered a silver 2006 Toyota 4runner parked near the 100 block of West Third and took a purse, wallet, and contents valued at $312. Please contact the Salem Police Department at 573-729-4242 if you have any info regarding the theft, which is still under investigation.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their arrest reports for Dent County. On Saturday, March 1^st at 12:30 in the early morning, 40-year old William Burns of Salem was arrested on a misdemeanor Dent County warrant for failure to appear on a charge of marijuana possession. Burns was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on bond. That night at 11:45, 28-year old Christopher Dement of Salem was arrested on a felony Crawford County warrant for a probation violation, felony Phelps County warrant for leaving the scene of an accident, Salem Police Department warrant for shoplifting and traffic violations, and a Dent County warrant for dangerous drugs. Dement was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on no bond.

Missouri elementary, middle and home-school students Kindergarten thru 8 have until March 14^th to participate in the 2014 “Yes You CAN Make Missouri Litter-Free” trash-can-decorating contest. The annual trash-can contest encourages school classes and groups to join in the fight against litter by decorating and displaying a large trash can with the “No MOre Trash!” logo and a litter-prevention message using a variety of creative media. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), the contest is part of the state’s “No MOre Trash!” (NMT) statewide litter campaign. This partnership between MDC and MoDOT, along with thousands of volunteers, is working to prevent and reduce litter in Missouri through education, prevention, and cleanup activities. Schools may submit one entry in each competition category: Kindergarten thru 2^nd, 3^rd thru 5^th and 6^th thru 8^th. Entries are judged based on creativity, adherence to contest rules and effective use of theme and logo. First-place winners from each competition category receive $200 awarded to the sponsoring schools. All first-place winners are then eligible for a grand prize of a trophy and $600 awarded to the sponsoring school. There is no entry fee for the contest. Participating school groups must submit a completed entry form online and up to three photos to www.nomoretrash.org by March 14^th. Contest rules, entry forms, logo, past contest entries and winners, current entries, and educational information can also be found at www.nomoretrash.org.

The Dent County Cattlemen will hold their annual meeting on Saturday, March 8th at Indian Trail Archery on Highway 19 North in Salem. The meeting will begin with registration at 6 P.M. and the ladies of the Sligo United Methodist Church will serve our meal at 6:30 P.M. There will be a $5.00/per plate charge. Children under the age of five may eat free. Guest speakers will include Jeff Schoen, a representative for Boehringer-Ingelheim, who will speak about wormers and vaccines, and a representative from Dow will talk about weed and brush control. After the speakers will be a short business meeting and the election of officers for the coming year. This is also the time to renew your membership. The dues are $10 and you must pay them to remain on the mailing list.
