It was a cold opening day at Montauk State Park with light snow falling as the opening pistol was fired and the beginning of catch and keep trout began. Because of the weather and some hazardous driving conditions, attendance was below expected for a Friday opening day. The opening day trout tag totals at Montauk State Park were 1,856 comprised of 1,686 adult tags and 170 children tags. The largest trout caught on opening day went to Ken Lloyd of St. Louis who reeled in a seven-pound, 12-ounce rainbow followed by a seven-pound eight-ounce rainbow caught by Jeff Jordan of Edgar Springs. Mike Ellenberger of Festus topped out the top three catches of the day by weighing in a seven- pound, three-ounce rainbow. Catch and keep season will continue until October 31st at the Missouri Trout Parks.

Deputies with the Dent County Sheriff's Office and Troopers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol executed two search warrants within Dent County in February. The first search warrant was executed at the 100 block of County Road 2410 at the residence of Jason and Crystal Hodges, where methamphetamine and a handgun were found and one arrest was made during the search. According to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office, Jason Hodges left the residence prior to the arrival of law enforcement. He declined to turn himself in. On February 28th, Jason Hodges was found and arrested in Sullivan at a hotel. He had eluded deputies during this investigation and was apprehended while attempting to leave the hotel after officers with the Sullivan Police Department attempted to make contact with him. Crystal Hodges was charged with possession of a controlled substance and is being held on a $7,000 cash only bond, while Jason Hodges was charged with possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is being held on a $20,000 cash only bond. The second search warrant was executed at the 600 block of Route H, where methamphetamine and a similar controlled substance were located during the search of the residence. Richard Robinson was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, tampering with a motor vehicle and theft of over $500. He is being held on a $40,000 cash only bond. Millicent Virgin was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance. Virgin is being held on a $14,000 cash only bond.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, the City requested sealed bids for 300-ton 1-inch based crushed limestone, 300-ton two-inch clean crushed limestone and 300-ton of one-inch clean crushed limestone. The City Street Department will haul this material from their quarry to the City’s yard stockpile over a 30-day period. Bids were due by February 28th at 5:00 pm and City Administrator Clayton Lucas will present the bids. Lucas will update the Board on various issues concerning the City along with Alderman Kenneth Nash, Haydn Powell, Phillip Giacomelli and Ryan Whitaker. City of Salem Mayor, Gary Brown will give his report. In new or miscellaneous business, Waste Corporation is requesting the City’s approval to hold the Spring Clean-Up the weeks of April 15th and 22nd. The City of Salem Spring Clean-Up is a two-week clean up. The Board may then vote to go into closed session. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will hold their regular meeting on Tuesday, March 5th at 6:00 pm at the fire station. After the review of minutes from the previous meeting, the board will discuss the financial report, approve bills, sign file copies, go over the calendar review and the monthly reimbursement report as well as new and old business. Fire Chief, Brad Nash will give the officer report and board reports. The board will then set their next meeting for Tuesday, April 2nd at 6:00 pm at the fire station and vote to go into closed session. The meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors is open to the public.

Crews will perform bridgework with a 12-foot width restriction. The Stone Hill Branch of the Meramec River is located between Dent County Road 5225 and Private Road E in Dent County. Weather permitting, work will take place starting at 7:00 this morning and continue through Friday, April 5th at 6:00 PM. The work zone will be set-up for 24-hours and will be marked with signs. Motorists are urged to use caution while traveling in the area. The Missouri State Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service (NWS) will conduct a Statewide Severe Weather Tornado Drill on Tuesday, March 5th at 1:30 in the afternoon. Every school, citizen and business is encouraged to participate in the drill. Local warning sirens, and the Emergency Alert System (EAS) will be activated to signal the start of the drill.

The Salem 8th grade boys basketball team took 3rd place at The Show Me State Games Feb 22-24 in Columbia, Mo. Players are Dalton Cook, Eli Floyd, Logan Woolf, Eric Wood, Jakob Happel, Zak Eplin, Ty Conley, and Tyler Pilkington.

Laurence Bowers scored 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the Missouri Tigers posted an 89-76 win over the LSU Tigers in SEC play at Mizzou Arena. Also recording a double-double for Missouri (21-8, 10-6 SEC) was Alex Oriakhi with 18 points and 10 boards as the team posted a third win in four games. Missouri will host the Arkansas Razorbacks on Tuesday.

Derek Roy posted a goal and two assists to lead the Dallas Stars in a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday. David Perron scored the lone goal of the game for the Blues who defeated Edmonton on Friday night by the score of 4-2. The Blues will play the L.A. Kings Tuesday night at 9:30.

Zach Walters singled in the winning run in the ninth inning to lead Washington to a 7-6 win over St. Louis in spring training action on Sunday. The Cards play The Twins today.

Alex Gordon hit a solo home run as Kansas City posted an 8-1 victory over Cincinnati in spring training play on Sunday. The Royals have the day off today.

Funeral services for Calvin “Cab” Wright, age 84, of St. James, formerly of Steelville, will be today at 11:00 in the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Steelville. Memorials may be given to the St. James First Baptist Church Choir Robe Fund.

Funeral services for Ronald Crocker of Black will be Tuesday at 11:00 at the Locust Grove United Baptist Church in Black. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Smith Cemetery in Black with military honors.

Funeral services for Mr. Jay Osborne of Licking, age 76 will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Licking. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Interment will be in the Licking Cemetery.

Funeral services for Margaret Loraine Jensen of Salem, age 94, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Funeral services for Mildred Sue “Midge” Clark of Salem, age 80 are incomplete. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
