The Salem Community Garden Committee will kick-off the 2010 garden season in March with a variety of activities and tasks to prepare for new programs and gardening opportunities.  The original Community Garden site will accommodate individual beds and a number of specialized plots for experiments and demonstrations planned for the 2010 season.  A nearby site, the Annex Garden, will be used for harvesting for food pantry donations.  The committee will also continue to present workshops and “how-to” sessions on a variety of gardening practices to increase productivity and beauty of any home or market garden. The 2009 garden was a cooperative effort of the University of Missouri Extension’s Healthy Lifestyle Initiative, Salem United Methodist Church, local organizations, and citizens.  Eric Stevens, an AmeriCorps VISTA member, headed the effort as the garden coordinator through February 2010.  His one-year position with AmeriCorps has ended and he has accepted a new position in Illinois.  Management of the Salem Community Garden will be coordinated by several Master Gardeners for 2010. Many hundreds of hours were spent to make the garden a success, and many individuals and businesses donated seeds, services, tools and materials for the garden’s operation. The methods used to grow vegetables in the Salem Community Garden are described as bio-dynamic, intensive raised bed gardening.  This means that organic techniques are used to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers in an intensive spacing of many plants, in soil prepared using organic materials and the micro-organisms living within the soil. With the expansion of the Salem Community Garden, any donations of tools, seeds or other gardening resources are appreciated. Any resident interested in signing up for an individual garden bed at no cost or volunteering their time to help at the garden should contact Sarah Hultine Massengale at Dent County Extension, 729-3196, or Master Gardener Jim Almond at 729-6708.

The Dent County Cattlemen will hold their annual meeting tonight at The Commons starting at 6:00. The Sligo United Methodist Church ladies will serve the meal at 6:30 and there is a cost of $5.00 per plate. Children under the age of five can eat free. This is also the time to renew your membership. Dues are $10 for the county membership and $70 for membership to the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association. Jason McCann, the President of the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association will be speaking as well as Ben Eggers from Sydenstricker Genetics. Please call the University Extension Center at 729-3196 to let them know if you will be attending or if you have any questions.
